The sea-to-air fluxes of DMS also varied largely between seasons, with an average of 8.84, 11.87, 10.50 and 2.14 μmol m-2 day-1 in spring, summer, autumn and winter, respectively. Given the seasonal uncertainty of sea-to-air flux, the seasonality or situations where specific blooms occur regularly should be considered for accurate estimation of annual global DMS emission.To elucidate the dynamics of a suite of organochlorine contaminants (PCBs, HCB), PAHs and Hg and verify the potential of these pollutants as reliable fingerprints of sources, an ensemble of marine sediments and organisms (finfish, shellfish species and Mytilus galloprovincialis) were analysed from the contaminated Augusta Bay (Southern Italy). The Hg and HCB concentration in the sediments exceeded the EQS of the Directive 2000/60/EU. Similarly, ∑PCB and selected PAHs were above the threshold limit set by regulation. The marine organisms showed Hg concentrations above CE 1881/2006. Contaminants in transplanted mussel evidenced an increased accumulation overtime and different distribution patterns between sampling sites. Analysis of the homolog composition of PCB congeners revealed comparable patterns between sediments and marine organisms and offered the opportunity to define a robust fingerprint for tracing contaminants transfer from the abiotic to the biotic compartments. These results were confirmed by the Fluoranthene/Pyrene, Hg and HCB distribution modes.Few studies have mined social media platforms to assess environmental concerns. In this study, Twitter was scraped to obtain a ~140,000 tweet dataset related specifically to marine plastic pollution. The goal is to understand what kind of users profiles are tweeting and how and when they do it. In addition, topic modelling and graph theory techniques have allowed us to identify main concerns on this topic i) impact on wildlife, ii) microplastics/water pollution, iii) estimates/reports, iv) legislation/protection, and v) recycling/cleaning initiatives. Results reveal a scarce influence of organizations involved in research and marine environmental awareness, so some guidelines are depicted that could help to adjust their communication plans. This is relevant to engage society through reliable information, change habits and reinforce sustainable behaviour. A visualization tool has been created to analyze the results over time.In the present study, the bioaccumulation of chromium, manganese, cobalt, copper, zinc, selenium, arsenic, strontium, cadmium, tin, antimony and lead in tissues of thirty marine fish species collected from New Ferry Whorf, Sassoon dock and Versova fishing harbour in Mumbai, India, were analysed. The bioaccumulation patterns of these twelve elements were determined to assess pollution biomarkers based on cellular and oxidative stresses. Catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione-s-transferase, glycolytic enzymes viz. lactate dehydrogenase and malate dehydrogenase, protein metabolism enzymes viz. aspartate transferase and alanine transferase, and lipid peroxidation were significantly higher in muscle and gill tissues. The activities of the neurotransmitter enzyme acetylcholine esterase in muscle and brain tissues was inhibited due to pollution. This study suggested that biochemical attributes such as oxidative stress enzymes, cellular biomarkers, neurotransmitter enzymes and metal and metalloid contamination could be successfully employed, even at low concentrations, as reliable biomarkers for biomonitoring of contaminated marine ecosystems.We investigated the contamination levels of nine heavy metals (Mn, Pb, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and As) in 153 surface sediment samples collected along five tidal flats on the North Jiangsu coast, China. The spatial distributions of most heavy metals gradually decreased from the northern Sheyang region to the southern Jianggang region, while slightly increasing in the Rudong region. Principal component analysis indicated that Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and As were mainly derived from the natural environment, V and Cr were mainly derived from human activities. Additionally, Mn and Pb influenced by both natural and human sources. The geo-accumulation index and the contamination factor indicated that heavy metal contamination in the sediments exhibited little to no pollution levels. The potential ecological risk index exhibiting low ecological risks. Meanwhile, the mean probable effect level quotient values indicating slight toxicity. Cr and Ni were the major contributors to toxicity.Here, characteristics of marine litter ingested by Pacific bluefin tuna (PBF, Thunnus orientalis) juveniles under captive conditions were investigated. Swimming speeds of PBF juveniles with pseud-ingested polystyrene chips were compared, and mortality due to polystyrene chip ingestion in cultured teleosts (red sea bream, greater amberjack, and white trevally) was examined in the laboratory. Marine litter ingested by the PBF juveniles included mainly microplastics. The body size of dead specimens with ingested marine litter was significantly smaller than that of other dead fish. learn more We suggest that when the PBF juveniles ingested the marine litter, they died due to energy exhaustion within a few days. All the examined species ingested polystyrene chips, but no related mortality was confirmed. These results suggest that only the PBF could not vomit or excrete the ingested marine litter. This study indicates that the marine litter problem significantly affects the aquaculture industry, especially tuna aquaculture.
