he mortar layer.Magnetic sensor systems integrate a sensing element and magnetic field generators to determine their relative position or to measure movement. Typically, the magnetic fields are produced by permanent magnets, which have high intensity but are hard to machine into custom shapes. However, novel solutions using magnetic polymer composites (MPCs) have emerged as field generators due to their low cost, weight and patterning freedom. Here, we present a finite element model developed in COMSOL Multiphysics that allows the design of complex magnetization patterns on these polymer composites, taking into account the geometries of the parts and the magnetic properties of the materials employed. The model, together with the characterization protocol of the materials, has proved to be capable of predicting the magnetization of polymer composites at different temperatures. In addition, the model incorporates the properties of the magnets used during the magnetization process, such as the size, shape and magnetization, as well as the properties of the surrounding elements. This new model facilitates the design of new polymeric parts with complex shapes and magnetization patterns that can be employed as field generators in magnetic sensing systems.The clinical application of phytochemicals such as thymoquinone (THQ) is restricted due to their limited aqueous solubility and oral bioavailability. Developing mucoadhesive nanocarriers to deliver these natural compounds might provide new hope to enhance their oral bioavailability. Herein, this investigation aimed to develop THQ-loaded lipid-polymer hybrid nanoparticles (THQ-LPHNPs) based on natural polymer chitosan. THQ-LPHNPs were fabricated by the nanoprecipitation technique and optimized by the 3-factor 3-level Box-Behnken design. The optimized LPHNPs represented excellent properties for ideal THQ delivery for oral administration. The optimized THQ-LPHNPs revealed the particles size (PS), polydispersity index (PDI), entrapment efficiency (%EE), and zeta potential (ZP) of <200 nm, <0.25, >85%, and >25 mV, respectively. THQ-LPHNPs represented excellent stability in the gastrointestinal milieu and storage stability in different environmental conditions. THQ-LPHNPs represented almost similar release profiles in both gastric as well as intestinal media with the initial fast release for 4 h and after that a sustained release up to 48 h. Further, the optimized THQ-LPHNPs represent excellent mucin binding efficiency (>70%). Cytotoxicity study revealed much better anti-breast cancer activity of THQ-LPHNPs compared with free THQ against MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Moreover, ex vivo experiments revealed more than three times higher permeation from the intestine after THQ-LPHNPs administration compared to the conventional THQ suspension. Furthermore, the THQ-LPHNPs showed 4.74-fold enhanced bioavailability after oral administration in comparison with the conventional THQ suspension. Therefore, from the above outcomes, mucoadhesive LPHNPs might be suitable nano-scale carriers for enhanced oral bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy of highly lipophilic phytochemicals such as THQ.Seafood is a highly economical product worldwide. Primary modes of deterioration include autolysis, oxidation of protein and lipids, formation of biogenic amines and melanosis, and microbial deterioration. These post-harvest losses can be properly handled if the appropriate packaging technology has been applied. Therefore, it is necessary for packaging deterioration relevance to be clearly understood. This review demonstrates recent polymeric packaging technology for seafood products. Relationship between packaging and quality deterioration, including microbial growth and chemical and biochemical reactions, are discussed. Recent technology and trends in the development of seafood packaging are demonstrated by recent research articles and patents. Development of functional polymers for active packaging is the largest area for seafood applications. Intelligent packaging, modified atmosphere packaging, thermal insulator cartons, as well as the method of removing a fishy aroma have been widely developed and patented to solve the specific and comprehensive quality issues in seafood products. Many active antioxidant and antimicrobial compounds have been found and successfully incorporated with polymers to preserve the quality and monitor the fish freshness. A thermal insulator has also been developed for seafood packaging to preserve its freshness and avoid deterioration by microbial growth and enzymatic activity. Moreover, the enhanced biodegradable tray is also innovative as a single or bulk fish container for marketing and distribution. Accordingly, this review shows emerging polymeric packaging technology for seafood products and the relevance between packaging and seafood qualities.Paunch is a fibrous solid residue consisting of partially digested feed from the stomachs of processed cattle. It is the largest untapped solid waste stream from animals at meat processing plants, and potentially a valuable source of fibres for the production of sustainable and potentially higher-value natural biocomposite materials. Paunch was obtained from the waste effluent of a red meat processing plant, and the fibre characteristics of the as-obtained material were studied and benchmarked against wood flour and ground buffel grass, with a view to evaluating the potential of paunch as a fibre for polymer composites. The ground paunch possessed a rough fibrous surface and fibre-like characteristics that were comparable to both wood flour and ground buffel grass, demonstrating their potential for use in composites. Without any pre-treatment or compatibilisation, composites of a representative biopolymer, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) and ground paunch were successfully produced for the first time via extrusion, with up to 50 wt% paunch content. Mechanical property analysis showed that, at 30 wt% content, PHBV/ground paunch composites yielded mechanical properties that were comparable to those of composites with ground buffel grass.Freezing has been widely used for long-term food preservation. However, freezing-thawing (FT) treatment usually influences the texture and structure of food gels such as konjac. For their texture control after FT treatment, it is important to clarify the structural change of food gels during the FT process. In this study, we investigated the aggregated structures of konjac glucomannan (GM) gels during the FT process using simultaneous synchrotron small-angle X-ray/wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) techniques. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/gefitinib-based-protac-3.html The FT treatment resulted in more crystallization of GM, and consequently, a large increase in compressive stress. In-situ SAXS/WAXS measurements revealed the following findings on freezing, water molecules came out of the aggregated phase of GM and after the thawing, they came back into the aggregated phase, but the aggregated structure did not return to the one before the freezing; the gel network enhanced the inhomogeneity due to the growth of ice crystals during freezing. Furthermore, we examined the influence of additives such as polyvinyl (alcohol) (PVA) and antifreeze glycoprotein (AFGP) on the mechanical and structural properties of freeze-thawed GM gels. Although the addition of PVA and AFGP suppressed the crystallization of GM, it could not prevent the growth of ice crystals and the increase in the inhomogeneity of the gel network. As a result, the compressive stresses for freeze-thawed GM gels containing PVA or AFGP were significantly higher compared with those of GM gels without FT treatments, although they were lower than those of freeze-thawed GM gels. The findings of this study may be useful for not only the texture control of freeze-thawed foods but also the improvement of the mechanical performance of the biomaterials.The lack of long-term stability of polymeric neural interfaces remains one of the most important and less tackled issues in this research field. To address this issue, we fabricated two test structures based on interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) encapsulated with polyimide (PI). One of the test samples was pretreated with barrel oxygen plasma prior to spin coating of the second PI layer. The second test structure was pretreated using a reactive ion etching (RIE) process. The test samples were immersed in an electrolyte solution at elevated temperatures to mimic the conditions inside the human brain. The samples were then electrically and mechanically stressed to accelerate their degradation. Real-time monitoring of the electrical insulation stability was used to compare the impact of the pretreatment on the long-term stability. Barrel-plasma-activated test samples showed a mean lifetime of 1.5 days, whereas RIE pretreatment increased the mean lifetime to 24 days. Therefore, RIE-pretreated test samples exhibited 16 times longer mean stability compared to purely chemically activated test samples. Furthermore, the electrical measurements were correlated with mechanical adhesion tests. Chemically activated test samples showed significant delamination, whereas RIE pretreatment enhanced the adhesion, and no delamination could be observed. The correlation of these investigations suggests that the adhesion between different layers is higher following RIE pretreatment compared to pretreatment with chemical barrel plasma. In conclusion, the adhesion between the two PI foils seems to play a key role in the long-term stability of such devices.Plant pathogens are responsible for important damages to valuable crops causing important economic losses. Agrobiodiversity protection is crucial for the valorization of local varieties that could possess higher resistance to biotic and abiotic stress. At the beginning of germination, seeds are susceptible to pathogens attacks, thus they can release endogenous antimicrobial compounds of different natures in the spermosphere, to contrast proliferation of microorganisms. The work aimed at characterizing the maize of local variety Nostrano di Storo seed exudates secreted during the first phases of germination, to identify compounds active in the defense towards pathogens. Storo seed exudates were proven to inhibit F. verticilloides germination. In order to investigate the cause of the described effect, compositional profiling of the exudates was performed through NMR, lipidomic, and proteomic analyses. This study suggests an important role of microbial endophytic communities in the protection of the seed during the early phases of the germination process and their interplay with fatty acids released by the seeds, rather than a specific antifungal compound. The valorization of agronomically acceptable maize lines with pre-harvest enhanced resistances to pathogens contamination could lead, in the near future, to commercially available varieties potentially requiring more limited chemical protective treatments.Periods of soil water stress have been recurrent in the Cerrado region and have become a growing concern for Brazilian tropical pasture areas. Thus, the search for forage grasses more tolerant to water stress has intensified recently in order to promote more sustainable livestock. In a greenhouse experiment, the degree of water stress tolerance of nine tropical forage grass cultivars was studied under different soil water regimes. The investigation followed a 9 × 3 factorial design in four randomized blocks. Nine cultivars from five species of perennial forage grasses were tested Urochloa brizantha ('BRS Piatã', 'Marandu', and 'Xaraés'), Panicum maximum ('Aruana', 'Mombaça', and 'Tanzânia'), Pennisetum glaucum ('ADR 300'), Urochloa ruziziensis ('Comum'), and Paspalum atratum ('Pojuca'). These cultivars were grown in pots under three soil water regimes (high soil water regime-HSW (non-stressful condition), middle soil water regime-MSW (moderate water stress), and low soil water regime-LSW (severe water stress)).
