What You Need to Know About an Electric Heater
Electric heaters are an excellent way to provide a quick blast of warmth whenever you need it. They are usually rated for a specific room size and include features such as thermostats, overheat switch, and timers.
Electric heaters convert electrical energy into heat by joule heating. The heating element is composed of nichrome wire and ceramic insulators.
Resistor
The resistor is an electrical component that hinders the flow of current in the circuit by reducing its voltage and absorbing some of it as heat. It works by converting electrical energy into thermal energy, using only a fraction of a watt. This is a common method used in electric light bulbs as well as heating elements.
The resistance in the resistor is determined by its thickness, material and other properties. The higher the resistance of the resistor the greater power will be dissipated. This is due to higher currents leading to more electrons within the resistor and more electrons lead to more collisions between them. The higher the temperature, the more collisions occur.
In general resistors have an upper limit on the power that they can safely dissipate which is usually somewhere between 1/8W (0.125W) and 1W. Resistors that have a high power rating can be recognized by their larger packaging. The power rating of a resistor can be deduced from the packaging it comes in or by comparing its physical dimension to other resistors that have a known power rating.
Electric heaters are a specific type of power resistor designed to convert electricity into heat. They can generate convective heat through the circulation of air around the resistor or radiant heat by emitting infrared radiation. They are typically used with fans to improve the heating efficiency.
If a resistor's maximum power rating is exceeded the resistor will begin to heat up and can damage nearby components. In extreme cases the resistor could reach a point where it self-ignites, causing the fire to spread. To avoid this, it is recommended that a resistor be installed to limit the current.
Heater resistors are tagged with an identifier color that indicates its value, along with other information, like temperature coefficient and manufacturing accuracy. For instance, a six-banded resistor will have five bands that reveal its digits, and then the sixth band informs you of its multiplier and tolerance. If you're looking to determine the value of your resistor, there are plenty of online calculators that can be used.
Coil
Electric heating coils form the core of any electrically powered appliance that makes use of heat to warm objects or liquids. They employ the process known as conduction to convert electricity into heat. They can be designed in a variety of forms based on their purpose. Electric heating coils are capable of producing a large amount of heat in a short period of time which makes them ideal for applications that require quick temperature fluctuations or high levels of thermal efficiency.
The heart of an electrical heating coil is an intricately twisted arrangement composed of wires made from metal. This tightly packed structure allows for the most wires to be able to fit in an area of a smaller size, thus increasing conductivity. The coil is then insulated with various materials, based on the needs of the specific application. Insulation for electric heaters that is used in liquid immersion could be made out of a non-flammable plastic called polyvinylchloride (PVC) or polyester polyimide. A coil used for cryogenics would typically be insulated using molybdenum diilicide.
These materials aren't just resistant to oxidation and corrosion they also provide protection against the elements. This makes them suitable for a wide range of industrial applications. Stainless steel is the most common element for a heater coil, but nickel-chrome and iron-chromium-aluminum alloys are also commonly used. These alloys offer a great combination of cost, corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance.
Metals used in heating elements are exposed to high temperatures and environment that is corrosive. They need to be protected. These protections include coatings, sealants, improved drainage and ventilation, and regular maintenance and inspections. Moisture intrusion is another problem that needs to be addressed. It can cause damage to the heater's internal components and reduce its life span.
Coils are also used in other equipments, including ovens or furnaces, as well water tanks. They can be formed in a variety of shapes to fit the application, and they are often printed on substrates like aluminum 6061-T6, muscovite, Phlogopite mica sheets, or conductive plastic. They can be coated with a variety of materials such as silver, nickel and gold, to improve their appearance.
Thermostat
While you probably don't think about it a lot your thermostat is a crucial component of your home's comfort system. The main function of the thermostat is to turn the heater ON and off so that it maintains your preferred temperature setting. It can also alter the temperature to suit your daily routine. This is ideal for those with an unpredictable schedule.
Most thermostats are electronic models which can be controlled via an interface on a computer or an app for your smartphone. The latest models also have a learning capability that automatically adjusts to your specific lifestyle, so you'll never have to worry about when you should be home for dinner.
In the older thermostats that were not digital, the electrical circuit was controlled by a bimetal coil or metal band that would expand or shrink based on the temperature. When the strip expanded and contracted the mercury switch tipped and activated the relay, which switched on the heating. As the strip cooled down it swung backwards, and snapped away from its initial position. This shut off the heating.
Modern electronic thermostats have replaced the electromechanical ones with a more precise technology that makes use of sensors for temperature and a small relay to do the same job. However, it's still easy to understand the mechanics of an electromechanical thermostat through examining its components.
One of the most important components is a thermometer coil which has a piece of mercury within it. When you turn the thermostat lever up or down, the coil rotates and tilts the mercury switch in one direction or the other. If the switch tips to the left, current flows through it and activates the relay, which switches on the heater.
As the room warms the mercury turns to the right and interrupts the circuit. The heater then shuts off. As the room cools down, the mercury reverts to its original position, and the heater turns on again. If you continue to alter the temperature on your electronic thermostat, the system may need to work overtime to keep up with your ever-changing preferences, which can cause it to use up more energy than it has to.
Timer
A wall heater timer allows you to program your lighting and heating. Contrary to manual timers of the past, it has a built-in clock that will automatically activate and turn off your lights or heaters according to the time set. It also helps you save money on your energy bills by avoiding unnecessary use.
They are most commonly used in the home however they can also be found in commercial and industrial facilities. By controlling when circuits are turned on and off, they provide convenience, energy efficiency and security. They can be used to control appliances such as lights, water pumps, and ovens. They are a great choice for those who need to control electrical appliances without a computer or complex programming.
Connecting a timer switch to an extension cord or outlet lets you set it to set. Then, plug in the appliance you want to control. Depending on the model you can plug in multiple devices at a time. Some models have a socket in the center of the timer, whereas others have a socket on the side or beneath it. You can pick from various plug-in timer switches, including those which can be controlled using tablets or smartphones.
The majority of mechanical timers have a dial with hour and half-hour marks. They also have little teeth that you can pull outwards to set the "ON" time, and then push backwards to set the "OFF" time. There are models with multiple sets that allow you to set the times of turning off and on for different days of the week. real looking electric log burners is important to keep in mind that mechanical timers may not work properly, especially when the internal clock is a bit off. If your timer isn't turning on or off as it should be, look over the wiring for any errors and ensure that all the pins are pressed in correctly. If you're still having trouble getting it to work, you'll need to consult a professional for help. You can also replace the timer. It's also a good idea to keep the timer in a secure place, where it won't be easily disturbed by children or pets.
