007) and B (p less then 0.019) groups. The environmental domain was negatively associated with BMI (p less then 0.004) and the very active group (p less then 0.001) and positively with the insufficiently active B group (p less then 0.049) and sex (p less then 0.018). CONCLUSION BMI is a negative predictor of QoL in bariatric patients and this trend was not observed in the physical domain only; also, the very active group was negatively associated with QoL. We believe that distortions in body weight/body size extend to PA, and research is needed to explore the psychological factors underlying the overestimation of the amount of PA performed.Hypertension risks arising from chronic exposure to inorganic arsenic (iAs) are well documented. Consumption of rice is a major iAs exposure route for over 3 billion people; however, there is a lack of epidemiological evidence demonstrating an association of hypertension risks with iAs intake from rice, especially in areas where there is little exposure from drinking water but a growing demand for rice intake. To address this, we conducted an individual-level cross-sectional analysis to quantify the extent to which daily iAs intake from rice and rice products (E-iAsing,rice) modifies the association between hypertension risks and previously well-established risk factors. The analysis was based on secondary dietary, socio-demographic and health status data of 598 participants recorded in the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey 2014-2016. E-iAsing,rice and five blood pressure endpoints were derived with potential associations explored through generalized linear models. According to the results, a negative but not significant relationship was found between hypertension risks and E-iAsing,rice after adjusting for major risk factors, notably age, gender, diabetes and obesity, with relatively higher risks being observed for male, middle-aged, overweight, alcohol consumer or Asian or Asian British, Black or Black British and mixed ethnic groups. Though inconclusive and mainly limited by potential incomplete adjustment for major confounders and intrinsic disadvantages of a cross-sectional design, this study was the first quantifying the individual level dose-response relationship between E-iAsing,rice and hypertension risks and is consistent with previous studies on the limited associations of hypertension with low-level arsenic exposure from drinking water. Larger scale cohort studies are indicated to quantify the association but in any event it is likely to be weak. The Arctic marginal environment has been considered as far from industrial areas and low population. During June-July of 2016 "Russian High Latitude" expedition, 93 samples of soil genetic horizon from 25 soil profiles dug till frozen ground were sampled from 8 islands and 2 capes of the Russian Arctic without direct anthropogenic influences. Nine trace metals (Pb, Cd, Cu, Ni, Co, Zn, Fe, Mn and Hg) were measured and quantified by energy-dispersive X-ray analysis for elemental concentrations. Through analysis of divided soil groups (Haplothels, Turbels, Historthels), the factors of organic matter and cryoturbation had a significant influence on metals' distribution except for Fe and Mn. From summarized soil master horizons (O, A, B, C), Fe and Mn are abundant in all horizons suggesting as geochemical background values. Cu, Pb, Co and Ni are distributed specifically in different horizons with leaching and accumulation process, whereas Hg is evenly disturbed in all horizons. The correlation analysis reveals that distribution of most metals in present soils is highly depended on soil properties (pH, TOC, clay and silt). Li was selected as normalizing element for metals' concentrations from mineral layers to establish geochemical baseline concentrations. selleckchem The concentrations of trace metals have been assessed by geoaccumulation index (Igeo) and enrichment factor, showing only Co and Zn are moderately polluted and slightly polluted, and Co, Cu, Zn and Pb are enriched in topsoil. Other indices as modified degree of contamination (mCdegree) and pollution load index (PLI), mCdegree show moderate degree of pollution and PLI shows unpolluted to moderate pollution load. The ecological risk indices, e.g., ecological risk factor (Er) and potential ecological risk index, show low ecological risk potential. The present investigation is the first in situ comparative study for the identification of Ni and Cu accumulation strategies involved in Odontarrhena obovata (syn. Alyssum obovatum (C.A. Mey.) Turcz.) growing in Cu-rich smelter-influenced (CSI) and non-Cu-influenced (NCI) sites. The total and Na2EDTA (disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid)-extractable metal concentration in soils and plant tissues (roots, stem, leaves and flowers) were determined for CSI and NCI sites. High concentrations of total Ni, Cr, Co and Mg in the soil suggest serpentine nature of both the sites. In spite of high total and extractable Cu concentrations in CSI soil, majority of its accumulation was restricted to O. obovata roots showing its excluder response. Since the translocation and bioconcentration factors of Ni > 1 and the foliar Ni concentration > 1000 μg g-1, it can be assumed that O. obovata has Ni hyperaccumulation potential for both the sites. No significant differences in chlorophyll content in O. obovata leaves were observed between studied sites, suggesting higher tolerance of this species under prolonged heavy metal stress. Furthermore, this species from CSI site demonstrated rather high viability under extreme technogenic conditions due to active formation of antioxidants such as ascorbate, free proline and protein thiols. The presence of Cu in higher concentration in serpentine soil does not exert detrimental effect on O. obovata and its Ni hyperaccumulation ability. Thus, O. obovata could act as a putative plant species for the remediation of Cu-rich/influenced serpentine soils without compromising its Ni content and vitality.Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a common complication after trauma. The development of markers to predict DVT in trauma patients is needed, and circulating microparticles (MPs) and their contents are possible candidates. In this study, we aimed to identify platelet factor 4 (PF4) and β-thromboglobulin (β-TG) mRNAs in circulating MPs as potential markers for DVT diagnosis in trauma patients. Fifteen trauma patients diagnosed with DVT and fifteen matched patients without DVT were included in this study. Fifteen healthy volunteers also were included as controls. Circulating MPs were obtained from the plasma of all study subjects. Annexin V+ MPs and platelet-derived MPs (PMPs) were quantified using flow cytometry. PF4 and β-TG mRNAs in MPs were determined by qPCR, and the common logarithm of relative quantitation (RQ) was calculated using the comparative Ct method. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves were performed to analyze the diagnostic value of PF4 and β-TG mRNAs. No significant differences were found in Annexin V+ MPs and PMPs levels between trauma patients with and without DVT.
