Adequate knowledge on hazards of healthcare waste and proper handling methods can result in its safe disposal and protection of workers and communities. The study assessed perceptions of healthcare workers on the adherence and risks associated with the practices of healthcare waste management.

A total of 126 questionnaires were administered in selected wards at an academic hospital to establish training and knowledge on legislations regarding healthcare waste and health hazards associated with such waste.

Sixty nine percent (69.0%) of participants had received training on healthcare waste handling. The highest number of cleaning staff (85.7%) received training from work while 34.8% of the doctors also received training from work. Only 44.1% of the nurses had knowledge about policies on healthcare waste. The majority of the participants (82.0%) had knowledge on the risks associated with handling of healthcare waste. However, only 20.0% of the participants re-capped needles after use and of these 43.5% were doctors. Most of the nurses (64.0%) had been exposed to needle pricks.

Even though 82.0% of the participants believed there were enough management practices enforced with regards to the healthcare waste, it was recommended that there should be more education on the handling of healthcare waste.

To establish a preliminary national report on clinical and genetic features of cystic fibrosis (CF) in Tunisian children as a first measure for a better health care organization.

All children with CF diagnosed by positive sweat tests between 1996 and 2015 in children's departments of Tunisian university hospitals were included. Data was recorded at diagnosis and during the follow-up from patients' medical records.

In 12 departments, 123 CF children were collected. The median age at diagnosis was 5 months with a median diagnosis delay of 3 months. CF was revealed mostly by recurrent respiratory tract infections (69.9%), denutrition (55.2%), and/or chronic diarrhea (41.4%). The mean sweat chloride concentration was 110.9mmol/L. At least one mutation was found in 95 cases (77.2%). The most frequent mutations were Phe508del (n=58) and E1104X (n=15). find more Fifty-five patients had a
chronic colonization at a median age of 30 months. Cirrhosis and diabetes appeared at a mean age of 5.5 and 12.5 years respectively in 4 patients each. Sixty-two patients died at a median age of 8 months. Phe508del mutation and hypotrophy were associated with death (p=0.002 and p<0.001, respectively).

The positive effects of steroids on lung development are well known, and 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D
has been shown to exert positive effects on fetal lung development.

We aimed to investigate the relationship between 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels and respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in premature infants.

Infants aged ≤32 gestational weeks who were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) during 1 year were enrolled in this prospective study. 25(OH)D levels were obtained at the time of admission to NICU. Patients were divided into three groups according to their 25(OH)D levels severe (group 1), moderate (group 2), and mild (group 3) 25(OH)D deficiencies.

The study comprised 72 patients; of them, RDS was observed in 49 and not observed in 23 patients. The mean 25(OH)D levels were significantly lower in RDS patients (p=0.04). Multivariate analysis showed that patients with higher 25(OH)D levels can be preventive for the development of RDS (odds ratio 0.89; 95% confidence interval 0.8-0.99; p=0.04).

Our study revealed that 25(OH)D deficiency is an independent risk factor for RDS in premature infants. However, further studies are necessary to explore the association between 25(OH)D deficiency and RDS.

Upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) is a common cause of admission and death in the gastroenterology service. The prevalence, risk factors and the case fatality rate of UGIB may differ by settings.

Our objective was to determine the prevalence of symptoms and the case fatality rate of UGIB among patients at the gastroenterology service of Mulago Hospital in Kampala, Uganda and to describe the clinical and laboratory risk factors associated with the survival of these patients.

In a cross-sectional study performed between September 2013 and April 2014, patients were screened for UGIB symptoms. Data was collected on socio-demographic characteristics, clinical presentation and patient's outcome within one week of admission. Bivariate, multivariate, and survival analysis were performed to identify variables that were significantly associated with mortality.

Out of 1085 patients screened, we identified the prevalence of UGIB symptoms in 220 patients (20.3%). Among these, 150 met the inclusion criteria foare associated with reduced survival.
the prevalence of symptoms and the case fatality rate of UGIB among patients admitted to the gastroenterology ward in Mulago hospital were higher than in developed countries and similar to other resource-limited setting. The majority of patients were young men and presented with both hematemesis and melena. The most common causes of UGIB were esophageal varices, gastritis and PUD. Survival analysis indicate that male gender, uremia, and malignancy are associated with reduced survival.
