The lanthanide binding ability of a macrocyclic ligand H6L2 comprising two bis(iminomethyl)phenol and two calix[4]arene units has been studied. H6L2 is a ditopic ligand which provides dinuclear neutral complexes of composition [Ln2(L2)(MeOH)2] (Ln = La (1), Eu (2), Tb (3), and Yb (4)) in very good yield. X-ray crystal structure analyses for 2 and 3 show that (L2)6- accommodates two seven coordinated lanthanide ions in a distorted monocapped trigonal prismatic/octahedral coordination environment. selleck UV-vis spectroscopic titrations performed with La3+, Eu3+, Tb3+ and Yb3+ ions in mixed MeOH/CH2Cl2 solution (I = 0.01 M NBu4PF6) reveal that a 2  1 (metal  ligand) stoichiometry is present in solution, with log K11 and K21 values ranging from 5.25 to 6.64. The ratio α = K11/K21 of the stepwise formation constants for the mononuclear (L2 + M = ML2, log K11) and the dinuclear complexes (ML2 + M = M2L2, log K21) was found to be invariably smaller than unity indicating that the binding of the first Ln3+ ion augments the binding of the second Ln3+ ion. The present complexes are less luminescent than other seven-coordinated Eu and Tb complexes, which can be traced to vibrational relaxation of excited EuIII and TbIII states by the coligated MeOH and H2O molecules and/or low-lying ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) states.Half-metallic ferromagnetic/ferrimagnetic (FiM) materials are a matter of enormous interest due to their potential technological applications in solid-state electronic devices. In this way, strain plays an important role to tune or control the physical properties of the systems; therefore, the influence of both biaxial ([110]) and hydrostatic ([111]) strain on the electronic and magnetic properties of recently synthesized double perovskite oxide Lu2NiIrO6 is investigated using density-functional theory calculations. The unstrained system exhibits a FiM Mott-insulating (i.e., having an energy gap of 0.20 eV) ground state due to strong antiferromagnetic superexchange coupling between high-energy half-filled Ni2+-e2g↑ and low-energy partially filled Ir4+ t32g↑t22g↓ orbitals. Interestingly, a half-metallic FiM state is predicted under biaxial and hydrostatic compressive strains of -8% and -6%, respectively. The admixture of Ir 5d orbitals in the spin-majority channel is mainly responsible for the conductivity with small contributions from Ni 3d orbitals. In contrast, all the tensile strain systems show almost the same electronic behavior (Mott-insulating FiM states) as found in the case of the unstrained system. The magnetic moments of the Ni (Ir) ion slightly decrease and increase as a function of compressive and tensile strains due to shortening and lengthening of the Ni-O(Ir-O) bond lengths, respectively. Moreover, our calculations show that compressive strain enhances the structural distortions, which could help to increase the Curie temperature of the system.Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been widely used in conjunction with molecular oxygen to cause cancer cell death. Hypoxia, the inherent property in solid tumors, is the obstacle during the process of PDT. It is urgent to develop PDT photosensitizers independent of the oxygen concentration. Herein, triphenylamine-modified Ru(ii) complexes have been used as photosensitizers to produce superoxide anions (O2-˙) and hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) through a type I photochemical process. Ru(ii) complexes with triphenylamine can provide a possibility to drive the reactive oxygen species production through low oxidation potential and good light-harvesting abilities. The investigation on light-mediated radical production showed that Ru4 could produce abundant ˙OH and O2-˙ compared to Ru1-Ru3 under hypoxic environments owing to the strong absorption. These radicals exhibit potent toxicity, which can damage the neighbouring biomolecules and cause the apoptosis of cancer cells. The PDT effect was evaluated in vitro under hypoxia, suggesting that Ru4 could maintain excellent performance in inducing a sharp decrease in the activity of cancer cells.Enamines undergo α-indolization with ammonium salts in the presence of Et3N to form α-indolylketones. This is the first example of transition metal-, oxidant-, and fluorous solvent-free α-indolization of ketones. Key to the success of this convenient protocol was the use of in situ generated electrophilic indole species, as well as the use of enamines as a ketone enolate equivalent.Ni/CoOx sites were supported on an around 2 nm-TiOx modified hematite photoanode for water oxidation. TiOx demonstrates insignificant hole accumulation and a catalytically inactive surface that serves as an ideal platform. We reveal that the NiOx favors the extraction of holes from the TiOx surface, which are efficiently transferred to active CoOx for water oxidation. We demonstrate for the first time the construction of a low background electrochemical biosensor with tandem signal amplification for sensitive microRNA assay based on target-activated catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) of heteroduplex-templated copper nanoparticles. This electrochemical biosensor exhibits high sensitivity, good specificity, single-base mismatch discrimination capability, excellent stability and reproducibility, and it can sensitively detect microRNA in cancer cells.Precise DNA sizing can boost sequencing efficiency, reduce cost, improve data quality, and even allow sequencing of low-input samples, while current pervasive DNA sizing approaches are incapable of differentiating DNA fragments under 200 bp with high resolution (95% yield. Using this method, the average fetal fraction was increased from 13% to 20% after the enrichment, as measured by plasma DNA sequencing. This approach provides a new tool for high-resolution DNA size enrichment under 200 bp, which may improve NIPT accuracy by rescuing rejected non-reportable clinical samples, and enable NIPT earlier in pregnancy. It also has the potential to improve non-invasive screening for fetal monogenic disorders, differentiate tumor-related DNA in liquid biopsy and find more applications in autoimmune disease diagnosis.
