Polyunsaturated fatty acids and α-tocopherol were encapsulated in powders by spray drying using maltodextrins DE 12 as wall material and different emulsifiers (Tween®20, acacia gum or β-glucans-rich extracts from Pleurotus ostreatus). The aim was to study the effects of the surfactants on (a) the oil droplet size distribution and α-tocopherol stability during in vitro digestion, and (b) the oxidative stability during 15 days of accelerated storage. Acacia gum sample had the most stable particle size distribution up to the gastric phase, but showed a significant α-tocopherol degradation prior to the intestinal stage. On the contrary, β-glucan-samples displayed a bimodal distribution in the oral and gastric phases but retained α-tocopherol up to the beginning of the intestinal stage. At the end of intestinal stage, no α-tocopherol was found in the samples. The storage study showed that β-glucans improved the oxidative stability of the powders, which displayed 82% α-tocopherol retention after 5 days under accelerated conditions (60 °C), corresponding to 310 days at 20 °C, while acacia gum and Tween® 20 did not delay α-tocopherol degradation. Results highlight the potential antioxidant activity of β-glucans used as emulsifying agents during in vitro digestion and accelerated aging conditions. Most of the dyes used today by the textile industry are of synthetic origin. These substances, many of which are highly toxic, are in many cases not adequately filtered during the processing stages, ending up in groundwater and water courses. The aim of this work was to optimize the adsorption process of carbon nanotubes to remove an azo-dye, called Reactive Black-5, from aqueous systems. Particular systems containing carbon nanotubes and dye solutions were analyzed. Furthermore, the reversibility of the process and the presence of possible degradation phenomena by the dye molecules were investigated. For this purpose, the influence of different parameters on the adsorption process, such as the nature of the carbon nanotubes (purified and nonpurified), initial concentration of the dye, stirring speed, and contact times, were studied. The solid and liquid phases after the tests were characterized by chemical-physical techniques such as thermogravimetric analysis (TG, DTA), UV spectrophotometry, BET (Brunauer, Emmett, Teller), and TOC (total organic carbon) analysis. The data obtained showed a high adsorbing capacity of carbon nanotubes in the removal of the Reactive Black-5 dye from aqueous systems. Furthermore, the efficiency of the adsorption process was observed to be influenced by the stirring speed of the samples and the contact time, while purified and nonpurified nanotubes provided substantially the same results.Carvone is a monoterpene found in nature in the form of enantiomers (S- and R-). While previous research has demonstrated the anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects of carvone, the influence of carvone enantiomeric composition on its anti-allergic activity remains to be investigated. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-allergic activity of carvone enantiomers in a murine model of airway allergic inflammation induced by sensitization and challenge with ovalbumin (OVA). The oral treatment with R-carvone or S-carvone 1 h before each challenge inhibited the number of leukocytes and eosinophils in the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). R-carvone inhibited leukocyte infiltration and mucus production in the lung, which was correlated with decreased production of OVA-specific IgE in the serum and increased concentrations of IL-10 in the BAL. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/auranofin.html On the other hand, the administration of S-carvone had little inhibitory effect on inflammatory infiltration and mucus production in the lung, which might be associated with increased production of IFN-γ in the BAL. When administered 1 h before each sensitization, both enantiomers inhibited eosinophil recruitment to the BAL but failed in decreasing the titers of IgE in the serum of allergic mice. Our data indicate that carvone enantiomers differentially modulated IgE-mediated airway inflammation in mice. In conclusion, unlike S-carvone, R-carvone has the potential to be used in anti-allergic drug development.Although much of the world has progressed since the 1980s, our ability to treat infections with enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) has unfortunately shown little improvement [...].Structural analysis of epitaxial layers of the (Ga,Mn)(Bi,As) quaternary dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS), together with investigations of their magnetotransport properties, has been thoroughly performed. The obtained results are compared with those for the reference (Ga,Mn)As layers, grown under similar conditions, with the aim to reveal an impact of Bi incorporation on the properties of this DMS material. Incorporation of Bi into GaAs strongly enhances the spin-orbit coupling strength in this semiconductor, and the same has been expected for the (Ga,Mn)(Bi,As) alloy. In turn, importantly for specific spintronic applications, strong spin-orbit coupling in ferromagnetic systems opens a possibility of directly controlling the direction of magnetization by the electric current. Our investigations, performed with high-resolution X-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy, demonstrate that the (Ga,Mn)(Bi,As) layers of high structural quality and smooth interfaces can be grown by means of the low-temperature molecular-beam epitaxy method, despite a large difference between the sizes of Bi and As atoms. Depending on the applied buffer layer, the DMS layers can be grown under either compressive or tensile misfit strain, which influences their magnetic properties. It is shown that even small 1% Bi content in the layers strongly affects their magnetoelectric properties, such as the coercive field and anisotropic magnetoresistance.Shape memory alloys (SMAs) have been widely used in civil engineering applications including active and passive control of structures, sensors and actuators and strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) structures owing to unique features such as the shape memory effect and pseudo-elasticity. Iron-based shape memory alloys (Fe-SMAs) have become popular in recent years. Use of iron-based SMAs for strengthening RC structures has received attention in the recent decade due to the advantages it presents, that is, no ducts or anchor heads are required, friction losses do not occur and no space is needed for a hydraulic device to exert force. Accordingly, Fe-SMAs embedded in a shotcrete layer have been used for pre-stressing RC beams at Empa. The aim of this study is to present an approach to model and analyze the behavior of RC members strengthened and pre-stressed with Fe-SMA rebars embedded in a shotcrete layer. The lack of research on developing finite element models for studying the behavior of concrete structures strengthened by iron-based shape memory alloys is addressed.
