The objectives are 1) to calculate the position of highly accentuated lines in dental enamel of a group of individuals from Shahr-i-Sokhta, a thriving urban centre in Bronze Age South West Asia; 2) to identify peak frequencies of physiologically stressful periods during early childhood of these individuals; and 3) to relate these peak frequencies to developmental milestones at population level.
We analysed highly accentuated lines in the enamel of nine (n = 9) permanent mandibular first molars of nine individuals from the 5th millennium before the present urban and long-distance-trading complex, Shahr-i Sokhta (Iran). Age at death ranged between 4.5 years and 18-20 years. Permanent mandibular first molar enamel begins to mineralise before birth, and is normally completed sometime between 2.1-3.3 years, giving us insight to early childhood physiological stress, the ages at which it occurs, and any peaks in the frequencies in highly accentuated line formation, through histological sections investigated usinntal milestones connected with morbidity, and propose reporting standardised statistics to enable exploration of differences between populations in terms of postnatal health-related stress.The use of virtual reality as a training mechanism continues to gain popularity as equipment becomes more readily available. It is important to not only understand the relationship between virtual reality training and motor learning, but to understand the extent to which practice manipulations enhance performance in virtual reality. One common practice manipulation is adopting an external focus of attention, which has been shown to facilitate motor learning in a variety tasks. The purposes of the present study were to investigate the effectiveness of an external focus of attention and the effects of target occlusion times in virtual reality. Fifty-six participants performed a single-leg long jump during baseline, training, and retention and were randomly assigned to either an external or control group. During baseline and retention, all participants performed the task in both a virtual reality (VR) and real world (RW) environments. Results revealed that individuals jumped significantly further in RW than VR in both baseline and retention (p less then .001). During training, the external group jumped significantly further than control (p less then .05). These results suggest that the adoption of an external focus improves performance during training. Dictamni Cortex (DC), a Chinese herbal medicine with wind dispelling and itchiness relieving effects, is the most popular single herb prescribed for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD), as it is used in up to 12.68% of all herbal prescriptions for AD.
The present study aimed to evaluate the anti-AD effect of Dictamni Cortex extract (DCE) and elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms of its action using the 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (DNCB)-induced AD-like mouse model and a relevant in vitro experimental model.
Female Balb/c mice were sensitized with 200 μl 0.5% DNCB for three days. After sensitization, mice were challenged with 200 μl 1% DNCB on the same dorsal skin and also 20 μl 1% DNCB on each ear every 3 days, and orally administrated by gavage with DCE (0.6, 1.2 and 2.4 g/kg) daily from day 14 to day 29 for 16 consecutive days. At the end of experiment, the clinical scores for AD on the mice were calculated to evaluate the therapeutic effect of DCE; and serum, ears and dorsal skin of the m potent anti-allergic effect, and help place the application of DC for the treatment of AD on a scientific footing.
Our experimental results unambiguously indicate that DCE possesses potent anti-allergic effect, and help place the application of DC for the treatment of AD on a scientific footing.Biosorption of toxic metals in microalgae is a process relying on the presence of cell wall reactive groups acting as binding sites. This work studied the effect of culture conditions on the outer cell wall composition of C. vulgaris and cadmium biosorption. The experiments were conducted in continuous culture under light and nitrogen limitation at two growth rates (0.4 and 0.2 d-1). Functional groups were profiled using ATR-FTIR spectrometry, and total cadmium biosorption was assayed. Significant differences in composition were attested the most salient being the absence of carboxyl groups in the light deprived states and a larger number of carbohydrates and amino groups in the nitrogen deprived cultures, particularly amino groups from deacetylated D-glucosamine polysaccharides. Higher biosorption was obtained with the nitrogen-restricted biomass, reaching a maximum of 11.9 mgCd/gbiomass, as compared to a minimum of 8.0 mgCd/gbiomass achieved in the light-restricted states. The increased biosorption exhibited by nitrogen-restricted strains was attributed to the deacetylated amino groups that have enhanced cation affinity. This work has shown that the characteristics of the outer cell wall can be engineered by culture conditions to improve biosorption, providing a new approach that opens up new research frontiers for the biosorption of hazardous metals.
