Short-acting drugs reach their peak within a few hours and must be taken every day for 2-3 times. Long-acting medicines are absorbed slowly by the body, lasting 8-12 hours.

Numerous stimulants are available under brand names, such as methylphenidates, amphetamines, Dextroamphetamine and lisdexafetamine also known as Vyvanse. These are controlled substances that have the possibility of addiction and abuse. A person may experience side effects, including stomach issues or changes in blood pressure or heart rate. Certain people develop tics which is a continuous sound or movement, such as blinking their eyes or clearing the throat. Stimulants also reduce appetites and may cause people to lose weight.

Non-stimulant medications to treat ADHD

Medications like Wellbutrin and Strattera are considered to be "non-stimulants" because they don't work in the same way as stimulants do, however they have an effects on symptoms. They are less likely to cause risk of causing side effects, like insomnia or agitation and generally are more effective for certain adults than stimulants. Some people are not able to take these drugs and they are not helpful.

Antidepressants


Doctors may prescribe antidepressants for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) if other ADHD medication fail or cause too many adverse effects. They include atypical antidepressants, such as Wellbutrin and Clonidine, and older tricyclic antidepressants such as phenelzine (Nardil) and tranylcypromine (Parnate). These drugs are not recommended for children younger than the age of 10, as they could produce a sedative effect that could be harmful.

Stimulant withdrawal

Many people who have been taking ADHD drugs for a while stop the medication suddenly and can trigger serious withdrawal symptoms. To prevent this the doctors usually reduce the dosage gradually over the course of a few weeks. If this doesn't work, some patients are required to switch to a different drug.
