ADHD and Sleep Medication
People suffering from ADHD have difficulty sleeping. When they finally do sleep they are agitated and awake frequently during the night.
Objective measures such as polysomnography or actigraphy reveal that children with ADHD have a longer time to sleep, a longer time and a lower efficiency of sleep. However, in other instances they result of an insufficient amount of sleep and difficulties in reducing the arousal level of their daily functioning to sleep. It has been proven that treating the underlying sleep disorders can improve both insomnia and ADHD symptoms.
Stimulant medications can impair sleep for some people suffering from ADHD however, they also enhance insomnia and other sleep problems by alleviating symptoms that hinder getting to sleep (Spruyt and Gozal 2011). Additionally, certain formulations that are long-acting of ADHD medication have insufficient time to work, resulting in the escalating of hyperactivity or behavioral difficulties when you go to bed, as the drug concentrations decrease (Cortese et al. 2013a, b; Lecendreux and Cortese 2007).
