ADHD Medication Options For Adults UK
There are two kinds of ADHD medication: stimulants and non-stimulants. check out the post right here and balance levels of brain chemicals that control attention and impulsivity.
Adult ADHD medications are controlled substances only a specialist ADHD doctor can prescribe these medications. Your GP can't. adhd no medication are usually prescribed as a six-week trial before changing or increasing the dosage.
Stimulants
Adults suffering from ADHD are primarily treated with medication. The choice of medications is now much wider than when ADHD was first recognized as an illness. In the UK as well as other countries in Europe and America, there are many various options available to psychiatrists treating ADHD.
As a primary line of treatment the doctor prescribes stimulants. These drugs increase the activity of parts of the brain that regulate the flow of information, motivation and mood. They also reduce impulsivity and improve concentration. They can be taken in short or long acting tablets, referred to as modified or immediate release, and are generally effective at managing the symptoms of ADHD very quickly.
The two most common stimulants are methylphenidate, also known as Ritalin, and amphetamines salts (Adderall). They are available in extended or immediate release tablets, and the type of tablet you use will depend on your preference and the degree of your symptoms. These are 'controlled' drugs, which means that they are only available through prescription and have to be closely monitored.
There are a variety of other medications that can be prescribed for adults with ADHD like guanfacine or Lisdexamfetamine (branded names Vyvanse and Concerta respectively). These drugs affect various parts of the brain to increase concentration and attention. They can also reduce blood pressure. In general, these are less likely to cause side effects than the methylphenidate and amphetamine salts and might be more appropriate for those who suffer from them.
Antidepressants, anti anxiety medication and other medicines are also available. However, these are only recommended if stimulants or another medication has not provided relief. Psychologists will often suggest therapy in conjunction with the use of medication because it is not possible to change the long-standing negative coping mechanisms with medication by itself.
It is essential to remember that taking medication for ADHD is an individual decision. No psychiatrist should ever make anyone take it. Medication can have severe side effects, and a specialist psychiatrist will titrate dosages on an individual basis to ensure that they are safe for each person. Having the right balance of medication and therapy can significantly improve your life quality However, it is crucial to consult with an experienced psychiatrist for a precise diagnosis prior to beginning treatment with any medication.
ADHD symptoms should be severe, disruptive and present in multiple areas of daily life for a referral to an assessment clinic for diagnosis. This includes school, home and work, as well as social life. Talk with your GP in case you or your child suspects they may have ADHD. Request a referral.
