Foreign direct investment (FDI), as a key player in global economic growth, is a major contributor to carbon emissions. Based on panel data of 30 provinces in China collected from 2007 to 2018, this paper uses the two-tier stochastic frontier model to analyse the opposing two-sided effects of FDI on carbon emission performance and calculates their combined effects. The empirical study shows that FDI has both a promoting and an inhibiting effect on carbon emission performance, and the overall effect is characterized by less of an inhibiting effect than a promoting effect, resulting in the positive driving characteristic of the combined effect. The average inhibiting effect is 0.0402, and the average promoting effect is 0.1065, causing the comprehensive effect of FDI on carbon emission performance to have an average value of 0.0663. The empirical results also show that the promoting effects of FDI are greater than the inhibiting effects in most regions; however, after 2013, the level of the promoting effect declined overall. The subsequent indoor air Pb concentrations, average daily doses, and inhalation deposited respiratory fractions were predicted under four room scenarios for 3-mo, 12-mo, 28-mo, and 6-yr children and adults. Elevated blood Pb levels (BLLs) in children were modeled using USEPA's Integrated Exposure Uptake Biokinetic (IEUBK) model. Indoor air Pb exceeds the USEPA ambient air standard of 0.15 μg/m3 when humidifier fill water contains 33 μg/L Pb in the small room of 33.5 m3 and 0.2 h-1 air exchange rate (AER). For this room, ~40-46% inhaled Pb-containing humidifier particles deposit in children's respiratory tracts; inhaling humidifier particles from ≥500 μg/L Pb water results in >1 μg/dL BLL in 2-7 yr children. For adults, ~23% of particles deposit in the respiratory tract; 8-h inhalation exposure with ≥17 μg/L Pb water exceeds the California EPA reproductive toxicity guideline of 0.5 μg/day. Larger rooms and higher AER decrease Pb inhalation exposure under the same water Pb concentration.Ultrasonic disinfection in wastewater treatment has been studied for years at the phenotypic level, while the understanding of the molecular inactivation mechanism is still not clear. Here, the responses of Escherichia coli O157H7 to ultrasound treatment were investigated using RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) and tandem mass tags (TMT) based quantitative proteomics methods. The analyses revealed that 770 genes and 201 proteins were significantly changed upon ultrasound treatment. Moreover, the integrated transcriptomic and proteomic analyses uncovered a set of 59 genes or proteins were differentially expressed in ultrasound-treated cells, providing an overview of the cellular responses to ultrasonic field. According to the bioinformatic analyses, genes and proteins that may be involved in lipid asymmetry preservation and outer membrane homeostasis maintenance (including phospholipid metabolism, lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis and transport, and fatty acid metabolism) were specifically up-regulated. Therefore, we proposed that the metabolism disorder of cellular membrane lipids (lipopolysaccharide, phospholipid, and fatty acid included) was one of the main challenges for the bacteria upon ultrasonic stress. In this study, we initially proposed a novel mechanism regarding the ultrasound-induced membrane disintegration from a multi-omics perspective, which may present an important step toward deciphering the molecular inactivation mechanism of ultrasonic field and provide a theoretical foundation for the application of ultrasound technology for the control of waterborne pathogens.This is the first study on the behavior and industrial fluxes of rare earth elements (REE) in the coastal fertilizer plants of Gabes (south-eastern Tunisia), the economic losses related to their wastes, and their environmental and human health hazards. The concentrations of 16 REE were assessed in phosphate rock (PR), phosphogypsum (PG) and phosphogypsum foam (PGF) samples, collected from Gabes plants. REE concentrations ranged from 0.23 (for Sc in PG) to 309.33 mg kg-1 (for Ce in PGF). Ce was the most abundant in the three matrices, with concentrations ranging between 80.40 (in PG) and 309.33 mg kg-1 (in PGF). PGF was the most enriched with REE (1075.32 mg kg-1). The annual flow of REE from the fertilizer factories to the marine environment may reach 1523.67 t. The economic losses related to the discharge of phosphogypsum REE in the Gulf of Gabes (GG) was estimated at ~58 million US$ y-1. The potential hazards of discharged REE on the local environment and human health were also evaluated and discussed. These findings show the need for the development of a new industry exploiting REE from phosphogypsum wastes (short term) and phosphate ores (long term) which should lead to reduce its high environmental and human health footprint and to potential economic gains.
