The large-scale use of pesticides is one of the main causes of the dramatic degradation of our environment. Pesticides such as imidacloprid (IMID) have been linked to declines in bee health and toxicity to other beneficial insects. They pose a threat to human health due to their persistence in the environment and accumulation in the food chain. Therefore, it is essential to test possible environmentally-friendly solutions for their elimination. The present study evaluates the efficiency of microalgae Nannochloropsis sp. for the removal of IMID from synthetic wastewater. The influence of aeration, light, and the presence of UV radiation on the degradation of IMID were factors considered in the study. A rapid RP-HPLC method was developed and validated for the analysis and quantification of IMID in the context of bioremediation with microalgae. Nannochloropsis sp. removed 4.39 µg mL-1 from an initial content of 9.59 µg mL-1 (reaching approximately 50%) of IMID in the first 20 h. This study demonstrated that the removal of IMID by the marine microalgae Nannochloropsis sp. is both effective and light-dependent.
Hybrid endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is a colorectal lesion resection procedure that includes both planned and salvage procedures. Previous colorectal hybrid ESD studies have involved single institutions or few operators over a short timeframe, and the size for indication has not been established. In this multicentre study, we investigated the clinical outcomes of hybrid ESD for colorectal tumors that met the 30mm lesion size criterion.
From January 2008 to December 2018, colorectal hybrid ESD was performed for 172 lesions (diameter range, ≥ 20- < 30mm) at Hiroshima GI Endoscopy Research Group. We compared clinicopathological characteristics and outcomes between 56 and 116 lesions in planned and salvage groups, respectively. We also compared data between 2008 and 2013 (the first period) and 2014 and 2018 (the second period) to assess operator experience.
No significant difference was found in the complete en bloc resection rate between the planned and salvage groups (92.9% vs. 83.6%, respect diameters ranging from ≥ 20 to less then 30 mm.
The evolution in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) includes the highly cross-linked polyethylene (HXLPE) which has been reported as an effective manner to reduce the wear of the polyethylene and the osteolysis. The purpose of the present study is to synthesize the results of comparative studies between HXLPE and conventional polyethylenes and determine their effect in primary TKA.
The US National Library of Medicine (PubMed/MEDLINE) and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were queried for publications utilizing the following keywords "cross-linked", "polyethylene", "HXLPE", "conventional", "total knee arthroplasty", "TKA", "total knee replacement" and "TKR" combined with Boolean operators AND and OR.
Ten studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the present meta-analysis with 962,467 patients. No significant difference was found regarding the revision rate for any reason between the patients who received HXLPE and those with conventional liner (OR 0.67; 95% CI 0.39-1.18; I
97.7%). The objective of this study is to characterize M. simiae clinical isolates using mycobacterial interspersed repetitive unit variable-number tandem repeats (MIRU-VNTR) typing for the differentiation of the strains. A total of 169 clinical isolates of NTM were recovered from patients suspected of having tuberculosis (TB)-like and related infections. After isolation and identification of mycobacterial strains by conventional biochemical and PCR-based tests, M. simiae strains were confirmed using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP)-based identification assay. Furthermore, drug susceptibility and MIRU-VNTR typing was performed using on the clinical isolates of M. simiae. Out of 169 NTM strains, 92 (54.4%) isolates were identified as M. simiae. Antibiotic susceptibility experiments indicated that all 92 M. simiae isolates were resistant to first line antimycobacterial agents. Moreover, 8 (8.6%) M. simiae isolates were resistant to ciprofloxacin; and 6 (6.5%) were resistant to both amikacin and kanamycin, while the remaining were susceptible to second line antimycobacterial agents. MIRU-VNTR analysis showed that the M. simiae isolates were classified in four distinct M. simiae clusters and two single types. check details The minimum spanning analysis revealed that the isolates were grouped in three complexes. The data suggested that MIRI-VNTR typing is useful for typing of M. simiae isolates, however, MIRU-16 locus was absolutely absent in M. simiae. An ongoing global outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2; previously temporarily named 2019-nCoV) was reported in Wuhan, China at the end of 2019. SARS-CoV-2 has become a pandemic and a major public health concern. As of 18 January 2021, the virus has spread all over the world, resulting in over 99,026 cases in China and more than 95 million cases in another 216 countries. After three months of efforts, Chinese authorities have managed to control the outbreak by implementing aggressive and effective measures; by striking contrast, the number of confirmed patients outside China is still rapidly climbing following an exponential growth trend, especially in some European and American countries. To date, no specific therapeutic drugs still exist for COVID-19. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to understand the updated comprehensive summary regarding COVID-19, in the hopes of providing a reference for the intervention and prevention of the COVID-19 epidemic for public health authorities and healthcare workers around the world.
The impact of cancer diagnosis and treatment on sexual quality of life (SQoL) is a well-established survivorship issue for gynaecological cancer survivors (GCS), yet little is known on how to intervene.
The aim of this systematic review was to identify the factors explaining the variability in SQoL for GCS.
We used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework and the software Covidence. Electronic databases Scopus, Web of Science, PUBMED and CINAHL were searched for original research on GCS published between 2002 and 2018. We performed a two-stage screening process against selection criteria and quality assessment of individual studies. The Salutogenic Theory and the PRECEDE-PROCEED model were used as theoretical frameworks to identify and categorise factors.
The initial search yielded 3,505 articles resulting in a total of 46 studies used to examine the association between factors of SQoL and gynaecological cancers. Our findings suggested that SQoL varies across subgroups based on age, menopausal status, relationship status, and treatment modality.
