We evaluated the effectiveness of NORTH STAR, a community assessment, planning, and action framework to reduce the prevalence of several secretive adult problems (hazardous drinking, controlled prescription drug misuse, suicidality, and clinically significant intimate partner violence and child abuse [both emotional and physical]) as well as cumulative risk. One-third of US Air Force (AF) bases worldwide were randomly assigned to NORTH STAR (n = 12) or an assessment-and-feedback-only condition (n = 12). Two AF-wide, cross-sectional, anonymous, web-based surveys were conducted of randomly selected samples assessing risk/protective factors and outcomes. Process data regarding attitudes, context, and implementation factors were also collected from Community Action Team members. Analyzed at the level of individuals, NORTH STAR significantly reduced intimate partner emotional abuse, child physical abuse, and suicidality, at sites with supportive conditions for community prevention (i.e., moderation effects). Given its relatively low cost, use of empirically supported light-touch interventions, and emphasis on sustainability with existing resources, NORTH STAR may be a useful framework for the prevention of a range of adult behavioral health problems that are difficult to impact.Although families can be a source of support post-disaster, depending on how they communicate about their stress, their attempts at support can be helpful or harmful. This study explored the moderating role of topic avoidance and co-rumination on post-disaster mental health (MH) in a sample of 485 parent-child dyads following severe floods affecting Texas. Parents (69.0% female) and their oldest child between the ages of 10-19 years (M = 13.75 years, SD = 2.56) completed online surveys approximately one-year post-flooding. Participants reported their flood exposure, life stressors since the disaster, topic avoidance, co-rumination, and MH symptoms (posttraumatic stress symptoms [PTSS], depression, anxiety). Structural equation models tested a moderated-mediation model of whether communication processes moderated the associations of flood exposure and life stressors on MH. They did not moderate the association of flood exposure to PTSS, but did have a moderating role for depression and anxiety. At low levels of topic avoidance, there was no association between flood exposure and child anxiety or depression. However, at mean and high levels of topic avoidance, there was a significant, positive association between flood exposure and child anxiety and depression. Co-rumination impacted both parents and children. For parents, there was no association between flood exposure and depression or anxiety when co-rumination was low or mean-level. However, flood exposure increased risk for depression and anxiety at high levels of co-rumination. A similar pattern emerged for children. Results for life stressors were nuanced. Overall, this suggests that communication can influence post-disaster MH.Mercury exposure can disrupt development of the cerebellum, part of the brain essential for coordination of movement through a complex environment, including flight. In precocial birds, such as fowl, the cerebellum develops embryonically, and the chick is capable of leaving the nest within hours of hatching. However, most birds, including all songbirds, are altricial, and spend weeks in the nest between hatching and fledging. The objective of this study was to describe the normal development of the cerebellum in a model altricial songbird so as to determine the effect of exposure to mercury on cerebellar maturation. Adult zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) pairs were fed either a control diet, or a diet augmented with one of four treatment-levels of methylmercury (0.3-2.4 μg/g wet weight), and their offspring, the subjects of this study, were fed the same diet by parents. We documented, for the first time, the schedule of cerebellar development in an altricial bird, and compared stages of development among methylmercury-exposed groups. For all treatments of methylmercury, the age of completion of cellular migration was later than for control zebra finches, indicating a delay in cerebellar maturation. Displaced (heterotopic) Purkinje neurons, a pathology typical of methylmercury exposure in developing vertebrate brains, were more numerous in methylmercury-exposed birds, and persisted at least until the age of independence. Delays in maturation of the cerebellum could delay fledging in altricial bird species, with potential serious implications for the fitness of exposed individuals, as predation rates in the nest are often very high.Serotonin exerts a significant role in the mammalian central nervous system embryogenesis and brain ontogeny. Therefore, we investigate the effect of perinatal fluoxetine (FLX), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, administration on the behavioral expression of adult male Swiss mice. For this purpose, two groups (n = 6 each, and ~ 35 g) of pregnant female Swiss mice were mated. Their offspring were treated with FLX (10 mg/Kg, s.c.) from postnatal day (PND) 5 to 15. At PND 16, one male puppy of each litter was euthanized, and the hippocampus was dissected for RNA analysis. At 70 days of life, the male offspring underwent a behavioral assessment in the open field, object recognition task, light-dark box, tail suspension and rotarod test. According to our results, the programmed animals had a decrease in TPH2, 5HT1a, SERT, BDNF, and LMX1B expression. Also, it was observed less time of immobility in tail suspension test and higher grooming time in the open field test. In the light-dark box test, the FLX-treated offspring had less time in the light side than control. We also observed a low cognitive performance in the object recognition task and poor motor skill learning in the rotarod test. These findings suggest that programming with FLX during the neonatal period alters a hippocampal serotonergic system, promoting anxiety and antidepressant behavior in adults, as well as a low mnemonic capacity.Traumatic abdominal wall injuries encompass a broad clinical and radiological spectrum and are identified in approximately 9% of blunt trauma patients. The most severe form of abdominal wall injury-a traumatic abdominal wall hernia-is seen in less than 1.5% of blunt abdominal trauma patients. However, the incidence of concurrent intra-abdominal injuries in these patients is high and can result in significant morbidity and mortality. Although the diagnosis of abdominal wall injuries is typically straight forward on CT, associated injuries may distract the interpreting radiologist in more subtle cases. Puromycin Antineoplastic and Immunosuppressive Antibiotics inhibitor Thus, it is important for the radiologist to identify abdominal wall injuries and their associated injuries on admission CT, as these injuries typically require surgical correction early in the course of their management. Untreated abdominal wall injuries subject the patient to increased risk of delayed bowel incarceration and strangulation. Therefore, it is important for the radiologist to be knowledgeable of injuries to the abdominal wall and commonly associated injuries to provide optimal patient triage and expedite management.
