Here, we investigate the functional diversity of seaweed assemblages across the rocky intertidal stress gradient at large (zones) and small (quadrat) scales. We quantified complementary metrics of emergent group richness, functional richness (functional space occupied) and functional dispersion (trait complementarity of dominant species). With increasing shore height, under species loss and turnover, responses of functional diversity were scale- and metric-dependent. Selleckchem Butyzamide At the large scale, functional richness contracted while-notwithstanding a decline in redundancy-emergent group richness and functional dispersion were both invariant. At the small scale, all measures declined, with the strongest responses evident for functional and emergent group richness. Comparisons of observed versus expected values based on null models revealed that functional richness and dispersion were greater than expected in the low shore but converged with expected values higher on the shore. These results show that functional diversity of assemblages of marine habitat formers can be especially responsive to environmental stress gradients at small scales and for richness measures. Furthermore, niche-based processes at the small-neighbourhood-scale can favour co-occurrence of functionally distinctive species under low, but not high, stress, magnifying differences in functional diversity across environmental gradients. As assemblages of marine habitat formers face accelerating environmental change, further studies examining multiple aspects of functional diversity are needed to elucidate patterns, processes, and ecosystem consequences of community (dis-)assembly across diverse groups.Crotamine is a polypeptide isolated from the venom of a South American rattlesnake. Among the properties and biological activities of crotamine, the most extraordinary is its ability to enter cells with unique selective affinity and cytotoxic activity against actively proliferating cells, such as tumor cells. This peptide is also a cargo carrier, and anticipating commercial application of this native polypeptide as a potential theranostic compound against cancer, we performed here a side-by-side characterization of a chemically synthesized full-length crotamine compared with its native counterpart. The structural, biophysical, and pharmacological properties were evaluated. Comparative NMR studies showed structural conservation of synthetic crotamine. Moreover, similarly to native crotamine, the synthetic polypeptide was also capable of inhibiting tumor growth in vivo, increasing the survival of mice bearing subcutaneous tumor. We also confirmed the ability of synthetic crotamine to transfect and transport DNA into eukaryotic cells, in addition to the importance of proteoglycans on cell surface for its internalization. This work opens new opportunities for future evaluation of chimeric and/or point-mutated analogs of this snake polypeptide, aiming for improving crotamine properties and applications, as well as possibly diminishing its potential toxic effects. KEY MESSAGES • Synthetic crotamine showed ex vivo and in vivo activities similar to native peptide. • Synthetic crotamine structure conservation was demonstrated by NMR analysis. • Synthetic crotamine is able to transfect and transport DNA into eukaryotic cells. • Synthetic crotamine shows tumor growth inhibition in vivo. • Synthetic crotamine increases survival of mice bearing tumor.Protracted febrile myalgia syndrome (PFMS) is one of the rare conditions characterized by long standing severe myalgia and fever in familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) patients. Laboratory studies show elevated values of inflammatory markers and normal creatinine phosphokinase (CPK) levels. Rarely, PFMS may be the first manifestation of FMF and this makes the diagnosis of FMF and PFMS challenging. The aim of this report was to describe case series of PFMS patients without previous diagnosis of FMF and discuss with other pediatric PFMS cases described in the literature. Six patients with PFMS as the first manifestation of FMF from two Pediatric Rheumatology clinics were presented. The male female ratio was 11. The median (min-max) age at diagnosis was 7.05 (5.5-15.5) years. All patients had severe myalgia. No fever was detected in two patients. Only one patient had rash. Markedly elevated acute phase reactants were observed in all patients. CPK levels were normal in all patients. Also, we searched the PubMed/MEDLINE, Google Scholar, Web of Science and Scopus databases from inception to May 2020, using the keywords 'familial Mediterranean fever, protracted febrile myalgia, child' and 52 pediatric PFMS were found. In the literature, three patients did not have fever, and nineteen patients were not previously diagnosed with FMF as our patients. As a conclusion, PFMS may be the first manifestation of FMF. It should be suspected in cases with prolonged severe myalgia with or without fever, and high acute phase reactants.Urmia Lake, as the largest lake in Iran borders, has a special role in the ecosystem of the region. The water level in this lake declines in recent year remarkably, so monitoring the lake water quality is important from an environmental view. In this research, the changes in the qualitative variables of the lake water (including electrical conductivity (EC), pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR)) are compared with the changes in the lake's water level based on the Mann-Kendall nonparametric test. Further, abrupt change points in the time series of quality variables were detected by the Pettitt test. Studies were carried out on samples collected from five different stations during 2005-2015. The results showed that the water level of Urmia Lake had a significant decreasing trend and also, except for TDS, the other investigated quality variables had negative trends during the studied period. It was observed that in general, the values of the Z statistic in the stations located in the eastern part of the lake were more than the stations located in the western part, and also the stations located in the northern parts had a higher trend than those in the south of the bridge.
