Individuals with dementia as well as laid-back care providers showing priority for treatment: A mixed-methods examine.
Intimate partner violence (IPV) among male couples is increasingly recognized as a public health concern. Research on IPV in opposite sex couples indicates frequent underreporting of IPV and high levels of discordance in reporting among dyads. Concordance studies inform refinement methods to measure the experience of IPV among dyads; however the lack of dyadic studies of male couples impedes our understanding of the extent to which IPV is differentially reported in male-male dyads. This study utilized baseline data from a randomized controlled trial of a behavioral intervention to optimize antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence among 160 sero-discordant male couples in three US cities and provides the first analysis of concordance in reporting IPV among male couples. Low degrees of concordance in the reporting of IPV were identified among male dyads, with a greater proportion of men reporting violence perpetration than experiencing violence. The greater reporting of IPV perpetration may be linked to adherence to concepts of masculinity. The results underscore the unique experiences of IPV among male couples and the need to reexamine current IPV measurement and intervention strategies. We introduce a real-time capable algorithm which estimates the long-term signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the speech in multi-talker babble noise. In real-time applications, long-term SNR is calculated over a sufficiently long moving frame of the noisy speech ending at the current time. The algorithm performs the real-time long-term SNR estimation by averaging "speech-likeness" values of multiple consecutive short-frames of the noisy speech which collectively form a long-frame with an adaptive length. The algorithm is calibrated to be insensitive to short-term fluctuations and transient changes in speech or noise level. However, it quickly responds to non-transient changes in long-term SNR by adjusting the duration of the long-frame on which the long-term SNR is measured. This ability is obtained by employing an event detector and adaptive frame duration. The event detector identifies non-transient changes of the long-term SNR and optimizes the duration of the long-frame accordingly. The algorithm was trained and tested for randomly generated speech samples corrupted with multi-talker babble. In addition to its ability to provide an adaptive long-term SNR estimation in a dynamic noisy situation, the evaluation results show that the algorithm outperforms the existing overall SNR estimation methods in multi-talker babble over a wide range of number of talkers and SNRs. The relatively low computational cost and the ability to update the estimated long-term SNR several times per second make this algorithm capable of operating in real-time speech processing applications.Single particle tracking is a powerful tool for studying and understanding the motions of biological macromolecules integral to cellular processes. In the past three decades there has been continuous and rapid development of these techniques in both optical microscope design and in algorithms to estimate the statistics and positions of the molecule's trajectory. Although there has been great progress, comparison between different microscope configurations and estimation algorithms has been difficult beyond simulated data. In this paper we explore using a piezo actuated microscope stage to reproduce Brownian motion. Our goal is to use this as a tool to test performance of single particle tracking optical microscopes and estimation algorithms. In this study, Monte Carlo simulations were used to assess the ability of piezo actuated microscope stages for reproducing Brownian motion. Surprisingly, the dynamics of the stage together with configuration of the system allow for preservation of the Brownian motion statistics. Further, feed forward model inverse control allows for low error tracking of Brownian motion trajectories over a wide range of diffusion constants, varying stage response times, and trajectory discrete time steps. These results show great promise in using a piezo actuated microscope stage for testing single particle tracking experimental setups.Single Particle Tracking (SPT) is a powerful class of tools for analyzing the dynamics of individual biological macromolecules moving inside living cells. The acquired data is typically in the form of a sequence of camera images that are then post-processed to reveal details about the motion. In this work, we develop an algorithm for jointly estimating both particle trajectory and motion model parameters from the data. Our approach uses Expectation Maximization (EM) combined with an Unscented Kalman filter (UKF) and an Unscented Rauch-Tung-Striebel smoother (URTSS), allowing us to use an accurate, nonlinear model of the observations acquired by the camera. Due to the shot noise characteristics of the photon generation process, this model uses a Poisson distribution to capture the measurement noise inherent in imaging. see more In order to apply a UKF, we first must transform the measurements into a model with additive Gaussian noise. We consider two approaches, one based on variance stabilizing transformations (where we compare the Anscombe and Freeman-Tukey transforms) and one on a Gaussian approximation to the Poisson distribution. Through simulations, we demonstrate efficacy of the approach and explore the differences among these measurement transformations.Lymphangiography as a diagnostic procedure dates back to the 1950s and was widely performed for several decades until being supplanted by other advanced imaging techniques. With the advent of thoracic duct embolization to treat chylothorax, Constantin Cope ushered in a transition from lymphangiography as a diagnostic procedure to a precursor for lymphatic intervention. Subsequently, technical modifications and applications of lymphatic embolization to other medical conditions have greatly expanded the scope and application of lymphangiography and lymphatic intervention. Although there is increasing familiarity with lymphatic interventions, few interventionalists have performed a high enough volume to be aware of potential complications and their management. Potential complications of lymphangiography and those encountered while performing lymphatic interventions are discussed along with approaches to minimize their risk and management strategies should they occur.
