The only nonsuperconducting rhenium-silicon binary compound, ReSi1.75, was heavily p-doped with Ga and Al into ReGaSi and ReAlSi in an attempt to evoke superconductivity. They were synthesized and their crystal structures were studied by both X-ray and neutron diffraction. Si and Ga/Al atoms are ordered into alternating layers, which was rationalized with the "coloring problem" study via first-principles calculations. ReGaSi cannot be further p-doped with more Ga, but ReAlSi can be doped with more Al to ReAl1.2Si0.8, in which Si and Al atoms are not ordered but randomly distributed on the same sites. The superconductivity measurements over these compounds demonstrate that the ordered ReAlSi and ReGaSi are not bulk superconductors. However, ReAl1.2Si0.8 becomes bulk superconductor with Tc = ∼3.5 K, which has been confirmed by magnetism, resistivity, and specific heat measurements.Injectable hydrogels can serve as therapeutic vehicles and implants for the treatment of various diseases as well as for tissue repair/regeneration. In particular, the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-catalyzed hydrogelation system has attracted much attention, due to its ease of handling and controllable gel properties. In this study, we introduce calcium peroxide (CaO2) as a H2O2-generating reagent to gradually supply a radical source for the HRP-catalyzed crosslinking reaction. This novel therapy can create stiff hydrogels without compromising the cytocompatibility of the hydrogels due to the use of initially high concentrations of H2O2. The physico-chemical properties of the hydrogels can be controlled by varying the concentrations of HRP and CaO2. In addition, the controlled and sustained release of bioactive molecules, including H2O2, O2, and Ca2+ ions, from the hydrogels could stimulate the cellular behaviors (attachment, migration, and differentiation) of human mesenchymal stem cells. Moreover, the hydrogels exhibited killing efficacy against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, dependent on the H2O2 and Ca2+ release amounts. These positive results suggest that hydrogels formed by HRP/CaO2 can be used as potential matrices for a wide range of biomedical applications, such as bone regeneration and infection treatment.
Conventional diagnostic laboratory algorithms for determining the cause of infectious gastroenteritis include culture, biochemical identification and immunoassays. In addition, multiplex PCR-based testing has advanced into the gastroenterology diagnostic arena in recent years.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of a new molecular test (Diagnostics Solutions Laboratory GI-MAP) for the detection of bacterial and parasitic pathogens in stool samples spiked with known organisms.
Faeces from a healthy human subject were pooled into a standard matrix and screened for the absence of bacteria, parasites and
antigen. Once confirmed negative single faecal aliquots from the matrix were spiked with solely one pathogen-type from a panel of 14 bacterial pathogens or one of 2 parasitic pathogens at a density of 5×10
organisms ml
. Sixteen spiked samples in appropriate transport media were sent to two testing labs, specifically a reference site using the PCR-based BioFire FilmArray Gastroinabsence of any true pathogens.
The highly variable results for the GI-MAP assay were unexpected due to the precise pre-spike analysis and the overall maturation of nucleic acid amplification methods within the industry. Problematic to this assay is the poor level of specificity displayed by this assay reporting the presence of several pathogens, which could cause clinicians to treat with antibacterial and/or antiparasitic agents in the absence of any true pathogens.
The commonly available platelet indices are platelet distribution width (PDW), plateletcrit (PCT), and mean platelet volume (MPV). They have been used in diagnosis and prognosis of various abdominal disorders. They have never been used to predict severity of alcoholic hepatitis.
A retrospective analysis of chronic alcohol consumers presenting with jaundice and deranged liver function tests was performed. Maddrey discriminant function (MDF) and modified end-stage liver disease (MELD) scores were calculated and patients compared between severe and nonsevere alcoholic hepatitis (MDF ≥32 vs MDF <32 and MELD >20 vs MELD ≤20). Logistic regression analysis was performed to find significant predictors. Receiver operating characteristic was used to find the area under the curve. Spearman correlation was performed to discover association between platelet indices and severity scores.
There were 119 patients in the study. Coexisting illnesses included pancreatitis, cirrhosis, infections, and alcohol withdrawa but they do not predict severe disease. Whether this inability to predict severe alcoholic hepatitis is due to coexisting illnesses such as pancreatitis, cirrhosis, and infection needs to be studied further.Phishing stands for a fraudulent process, where an attacker tries to obtain sensitive information from the victim. Usually, these kinds of attacks are done via emails, text messages, or websites. Phishing websites, which are nowadays in a considerable rise, have the same look as legitimate sites. However, their backend is designed to collect sensitive information that is inputted by the victim. Discovering and detecting phishing websites has recently also gained the machine learning community's attention, which has built the models and performed classifications of phishing websites. This paper presents two dataset variations that consist of 58,645 and 88,647 websites labeled as legitimate or phishing and allow the researchers to train their classification models, build phishing detection systems, and mining association rules.
Amiodarone is the drug most commonly used to manage arrhythmias. Long-term amiodarone administration causes hepatotoxicity due to iodine accumulation in the liver. Here, we present three cases of amiodarone-induced hepatotoxicity in patients on long-term oral amiodarone therapy who underwent dual-energy computed tomography (DECT).
We report the clinical and iodine density in the liver using DECT in three patients with amiodarone-induced hepatotoxicity. Liver enzymes were increased in these three patients, and abdominal DECT without contrast medium showed highly increased attenuation in the liver. Furthermore, the iodine concentration in the liver was increased. Selleckchem GSK-2879552 The first patient with amiodarone-induced reversible hepatotoxicity, showed a reversible course of liver function and a decrease in CT values after discontinuation of amiodarone. The second patient on long-term oral amiodarone had increased iodine concentration in the liver and liver damage, the patient eventually developed rapidly progressive pneumonia and died of multiple organ failure.
