Fitting a Cat Flap
It may seem difficult to put up the flap for your cat, but with the right instructions, it's not too difficult. First, decide how high you want the flap to be (on average, belly height). Mark this point on your door, and use the template provided to help you drill.

If you have a kitten, or a young kitten, prop the door open a bit and gradually push it to pass through. Reward it each time it goes through.

Measure the Door

A cat flap allows your pet to go in and out of your home at any time. This will keep your cat healthy as it ensures that it is exercising regularly and will also allow it to go back inside when it gets trapped outside in bad weather. This will cut down on the time you have to let your cat out or in and also make your home safe by letting you know when it's left.

It is essential to make sure that the cat flap is installed correctly to stop your pet from being forced through through it by other animals (e.g. dogs). It is essential to measure your pet's belly height and the doorway of your house in order to ensure that the flap is at the right height. You can adjust the position of your flap when your cat is taller or less than average.

The next step is to make use of a spirit level to mark the centre of the door that you will be installing the flap. Using the marking as a guideline, you can use a jigsaw and cut out the form of the flap inside the door. After you've cut the flap, sand down the edges to create smooth surfaces. Drill any necessary holes.

The process of fitting a cat flap isn't as complicated as you think and it should not take more than two hours to complete the entire task from start to finish. The process can be slightly more challenging if you need to install it in the form of a uPVC door or a composite one. This is because composite doors are available in various thicknesses, which could affect the way the holes are cut. This is why we recommend calling an expert to do the task, especially if you have never worked with glass before.

Measure Your Cat

You can avoid hours of ignoring the pet meow to be let in or out. This is particularly helpful for cats that are inside during the winter months while you are at work.

It is crucial to measure your cat's measurements first before you attempt the installation. Although it might seem like a simple operation it is crucial to make sure you measure correctly or your cat may find it difficult to use.

First, ensure that your cat is calm and not feeling stressed prior to taking the measurements. You'll need to hold them in a manner that they cannot move and also make sure that the ruler or measuring tape is flat against their body and not bending in any place. Holding the ruler or measuring tape against their body from their head to the bottom of their tail will enable you to get an accurate measurement.

Once you've got the measurement of your cat's body, it's time to look at the door and decide on where to place the flap. The flap should be placed at the level of your cat's belly. This will allow them to walk through the door with minimal effort. This will also prevent the flap from making a lot of noise when it swings back and back.

It is also important to think about the thickness and the structure of the uPVC door or composite. Although timber doors are of a similar thickness, uPVC and composite doors can be very different in their overall design and can make fitting the cat flap more difficult as you will need to make sure the hole you cut is the correct size for your pet.

It is also worth looking through the instructions that come with the cat flap kit to find a template drawing that can be used to determine the location of the hole in the door. This will allow you determine the location where the opening should be and also make sure that the template is correctly positioned on the door. Using a spirit-level to check that the template is sitting right against the door will also be very helpful.

Cut the Flap

Before you can put in your cat flap, you'll need to cut the door panel to make it large enough to accommodate it. It's a challenging job so it's recommended you get a professional assist you if you don't have the knowledge or skills. You can also consult the instructions included with the kit to learn how to do it right.

To do this, you will need to determine the height of your cat's or kitten's belly and use that as an indicator point. A good guideline is to place the flap around 10-15 centimeters from the ground as this is the typical height of the cat's belly. Your cat can move through the flap comfortably and also give other cats or snooping neighbours a tough time trying to leave or enter.

Mark the position of the cat flap on the door using pencil. If your kit comes with a template, place it over the door. Utilize the markings on the template to drill holes at each corner. You should then be able to cut the shape of the template and replace it with your cat flap.

You can install the cat flap yourself inside a wood or uPVC door when you're confident using the use of a jigsaw. Make sure you don't cut into any of the door's mullions or vertical rails. You can use a jigsaw to cut your panel into a square or circle according to the way you'd like it. Be patient and don't try to make the jigsaw cut faster.

Once the hole is cut, carefully place the cat flap into its new home. Make sure it's solidly secured. If it features screw caps, then push these caps onto the screws that protrude. Once the screws have been installed, sand the rough edges and seal any gaps. This will block the entry of draughts into your home.

Fit the Flap

If you have an ordinary cat flap, you can try to encourage your pet through it by placing a small amount of cat food on the front of the door. You can also push the cat with a stick or your hand. Once your cat has become comfortable walking through the flap it will be capable of walking through the flap as it pleases. This lets you let it in and out as it wishes.

It is possible to put the flap inside a UPVC door or a glass door, however it might not be as simple as putting one inside a wooden exterior door. This is due to the fact that the doors made of UPVC and some kinds of glass doors do not have a uniform thickness. This could have a dramatic effect on how you cut the opening for the flap and will also affect whether the flap will fit properly once it's installed.

The mounting kit may include a template that shows you where to drill holes. If the kit doesn't come with a template, you can create one yourself. When cutting, it is important to keep the jigsaw from being pushed too to the point that you create a bigger hole than is necessary in your door.

Certain cat flaps come in circular designs, which are more difficult to install. If you have a circular flap it's essential to make sure the hole is in the right position on your door, because if it's not, your cat won't be able to use it and could be stranded outside all day (or even night).

Some cat flaps have locks that let you control the time your cat can enter and leave. These are very helpful if you're worried about your cat going out at night and then coming back in the darkness, or if you're at work all day. Some locks can be used to lock entry or exit, and others can be locked both ways. This is useful for sick or elderly cats who aren't keen to go outside in bad weather.
