Fitting a Cat Flap
Installing a cat flap might be a bit daunting however it's actually quite simple to install with the proper instructions. Find out how high you'd like the flap to be (normally, it is at belly height). Note this on your door and use the template provided to guide you when drilling.

If you have a kitten who is still a baby and you want to keep the door open, gently prop it slightly open and encourage it to pass through. Reward it as it passes through.

Take a measurement of the door

A cat flap lets your pet to enter and exit your home at its convenience. This can help keep your cat healthy since it will ensure it is getting enough exercise and will also allow it to go back inside when it is stranded outside during bad weather. It also can reduce the amount of time you need to spend letting it out or in and can also keep your home safe by allowing you to be aware of when it went out.

However, it is essential that the flap on your cat is fitted correctly to prevent your pet from being able to escape through it or be pushed through by other animals (e.g. dogs). You should measure the height of your pet's stomach and the height of the doorway at your home to make sure the flap is at the correct height. You can adjust the position of your flap in case your cat is smaller or taller than average.

The next step is to utilize a spirit level mark the centre of the door where you will be installing the flap. Then, using the mark as a guideline, cut out the contour of your flap on the door with the help of a jigsaw. After cutting the flap, sand down the edges to create smooth surfaces. Make any holes that are required.

Fitting a cat flap should not take more than two hours. However, the process could be slightly more complicated if you need to fit it into the door of a uPVC or composite door as these doors have an array of thicknesses, which affect how the holes are cut and the type of door they are fixed to. We always recommend that you call a professional for your first time working with glass.

Measure Your Cat

A cat flap can save you from hours of listening to your pet's meow to let it out or in. This is especially useful for cats that are inside during the winter months when you are at work.

If you're planning to put a cat flap inside your door it is important to determine the size of your cat prior to beginning the task. It might seem like a simple task, but it is important to get the measurements right. Otherwise, your pet might find it difficult to use.

First, ensure that cat flap cover for winter is calm before you begin taking measurements. You'll need to keep your cat in a position that they are unable to move. Also, ensure that the measuring tape is straight and not bent against their body. You can take a precise measurement by keeping the measuring tape or the ruler flat against the body of the animal from the top to the bottom.

Once you have your cat's measurements then you can examine the door to determine the best place to place the flap. It is advisable to position the flap at the height of your cat's belly as this will allow them to move through it with minimal effort. This will also stop the flap from making too much noise as it swings back and forward.

You must take into consideration the thickness of the uPVC or composite door as well. While all doors made of timber have a similar thickness to them, uPVC or composite doors can differ greatly in their overall structure. This makes the installation of the flap for your cat more difficult since you have to make sure that the hole is the right size.

You can also use the template drawing included in the instructions to mark the location of the opening on the door. This will help you determine where the hole should be located and make sure that the template is set properly on the door. Utilizing a spirit level to ensure that the template is right against the door will also be very helpful.

Cut the Flap

Before you can install your cat flap you must cut the door's panel to make it large enough for it. It can be a difficult job so it's recommended you get a professional help you if you lack the knowledge or skills. You can also read the instructions included with the kit to learn how to do it right.

To do this you need to determine the height of your cat's or kitten's belly. Use this as an indication point. In general you should place the flap around 10-15 centimeters higher than the ground. This is the standard height of the belly for cats. This will let your cat pass through the flap without difficulty and will make it difficult for other cats and nosy neighbours to enter or exit.

Once you've decided the location where the cat flap needs to be positioned, mark this position on the door with pencil. If your kit comes with the template, place it over the door. Use the markings on the template to drill holes at each corner. You will then be able cut out the shape of the template and replace it with your cat flap.

You can install the cat flap yourself in a wood or uPVC door if you are confident with a Jigsaw. Be cautious not to cut into the vertical rails or mullions of your door. You can use a jigsaw cut the panel into a circle or square according to the design of your cat flap. Remember to take your time and don't try to force the jigsaw into cutting faster.

Once the hole is cut, carefully fit the flap of cat food into its new home and ensure that it is securely fixed. If it has caps for screws, then put these onto the screws that protrude. Once the screws are in place, sand the rough edges of the cut, and then seal any gaps to ensure there aren't any draughts getting into your home.

Fit the Flap

If you have an ordinary cat flap, you can try to encourage your pet through it by placing a small amount cat food on the top of the door. You can also push the cat with the help of a stick or your hands. Once your pet has become comfortable walking through the flap it will be in a position to move whenever it wants. This lets you let it in and out at any time it wants.

It is possible to fit a cat flap into an UPVC or glass door but it's not quite as straightforward as fitting it into a wooden external door since the UPVC and glass doors don't have a consistent thickness. This could have a dramatic effect on how you cut the hole for the flap and will also affect whether the flap fits correctly once it's been installed.

The mounting kit could include a template showing you the best places to drill holes. If the kit doesn't include a template you can create one by yourself. It's important not to press the jigsaw too hard when cutting, so that it doesn't create a larger than needed hole in your door.

Some cat flaps come in circular shapes, which can be more difficult to install. If you have a round flap, make sure the hole is located in the correct place on the door. If not, your cat might not be able use it, and could be stuck outside the whole day (or night).

Some models of cat flap have locks that permit you to control when your cat comes in and goes. These are very helpful when you're worried about your pet going out at night and then coming back in because of the darkness, or you're at work all day. The lock can be used to allow or deny entry, and some are locked in either direction allowing you to shut the door completely. This is especially beneficial for sick or elderly cats who aren't willing to go out in rainy weather.
