Noting previous policy efforts over a decade ago, we characterize industry challenges and suggest a path forward.Evidence is emerging that tRNA-derived fragments (tRFs) are regulatory molecules. Studies of tRFs in plants have been based on conventional small RNA sequencing, and focused on profiling of tRF-5 and tRF-3 species. A more comprehensive and quantitative analysis of the entire tRF population is highly necessary. Here, we employ tRNA-seq and YAMAT-seq, and develop a bioinformatics tool to comprehensively profile the expressions of tRNAs and tRFs in plants. We show that in Arabidopsis, approximately half of tRNA genes are extremely weakly expressed, accounting for only 1% of total tRNA abundance, while ~12% of tRNA genes contribute to ~80% of tRNA abundance. Our tRNA sequencings in various plants reveal that tRNA expression profiles exhibit a cross-species conserved pattern. By characterizing the composition of a highly heterogeneous tRF population, we show that tRNA halves and previously unnoticed 10-16-nt tiny tRFs represent substantial portions. The highly accumulated 13-nt and 16-nt tiny tRFs in Arabidopsis indicate that tiny tRFs are not random tRNA degradation products. Finally, we provide a user-friendly database for displaying the dynamic spatiotemporal expressions of tRNAs and tRFs in the model plants Arabidopsis and rice.
The importance of cognitive appraisals in the effectiveness of pain coping is well established. Two key variables in these appraisal processes are pain catastrophizing (PC) and perceived injustice (PI), which are known to increase the risk of long-term disability and aggravate the pain-related distress through maladaptive behavioral responses. However, to date, the mediating effects of these appraisals have not been examined concurrently in the breast cancer survivor (BCS) population, nor have they been related to health-related quality of life (HRQoL).

Using cross-sectional data from 110 BCS, structural path analyses were used to examine the mediating effects of PC and PI in the relationship of pain on the HRQoL in BCS.

Results demonstrated a significant direct effect of pain and PI on HRQoL combined with a significant indirect effect through PI, but not through PC. An increase in pain is suggested to result in a decrease in quality of life. On the other hand, an increase in pain also is suggested to increase the PI. A similar relation with PC was not retained as significant.

The relative salience of PI as a mediator of HRQoL underscores the fact that PI is not only understudied but also underappreciated and undertreated in the BCS population. The results of our study warrant replication across longitudinal studies but continue to expand upon the evidence of the multifactorial nature of pain coping in BCS.

Communication is essential to providing family-centered care in pediatric oncology. Previously, we developed a functional model of communication between parents and clinicians. Prior research has not examined the domains and purposes of communication between children and clinicians. We explored parental perspectives to begin understanding this communication.

Secondary analysis of semi-structured interviews with 80 parents of children with cancer across 3 academic medical centers during treatment, survivorship, or bereavement. We employed semantic content analysis, using the functional model of parental communication as an a priori framework.

We identified 6 distinct functions of communication in child-clinician interactions building relationships, promoting patient engagement, addressing emotions, exchanging information, managing uncertainty, and fostering hope. These communication functions were identified by parents of older (> 13 years old) and younger (< 12 years old) children, although the spThis functional model provides a framework to guide clinicians' communication efforts and future communication research.
The needs and experiences of palliative home care for patients with advanced cancer have received little research attention. We aimed to explore the needs and experiences of palliative home care among patients with advanced cancer in China.

This qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with patients with advanced cancer. Participants (n = 15) were recruited from an oncology palliative care unit and a hospice outpatient unit, and were selected using purposive sampling from October 2019 to March 2020. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and subjected to thematic analysis. Two researchers coded the interviews independently in NVivo 12 and developed major themes and subthemes by inductive and constant comparison.

Five themes were identified (1) physical need; (2) psychological experience; (3) spiritual need; (4) social need; and (5) information need.
