Results showed that melanogenesis-related protein expression levels were higher in the RBE group compared to those in the control group. Similar results were obtained by immunohistochemistry. CONCLUSION Our data suggested that RBE promotes melanin biosynthesis. Taken together, this simple in vitro HFLT model system has the potential to provide significant insights into the underlying molecular mechanisms of HF melanogenesis, and hence can be used for controlled evaluation of the efficacy of new materials for melanogenesis.BACKGROUND Advances in cartilage tissue engineering have demonstrated noteworthy potential for developing cartilage for implantation onto sites impacted by joint degeneration and injury. To supplement resource-intensive in vivo and in vitro studies required for cartilage tissue engineering, computational models and simulations can assist in enhancing experimental design. METHODS Research articles pertinent to cartilage tissue engineering and computer modeling were identified, reviewed, and summarized. Various applications of computer modeling for cartilage tissue engineering are highlighted, limitations of in silico modeling are addressed, and suggestions for future work are enumerated. RESULTS Computational modeling can help better characterize shear stresses generated by bioreactor fluid flow, refine scaffold geometry, customize the mechanical properties of engineered cartilage tissue, and model rates of cell growth and dynamics. Thus, results from in silico studies can help resourcefully enhance in vitro and in vivo studies; however, the limitations of these studies, such as the underlying assumptions and simplifications applied in each model, should always be addressed and justified where applicable. In silico models should also seek validation and verification when possible. CONCLUSION Future studies may adopt similar approaches to supplement in vitro trials and further investigate effects of mechanical stimulation on chondrocyte and stem cell dynamics. Additionally, as precision medicine, machine learning, and powerful open-source software become more popular and accessible, applications of multi-scale and multiphysics computational models in cartilage tissue engineering are expected to increase.Waste concrete is a key component of construction and demolition (C&D) waste produced in billions of tons. Exploring new technology for recycling waste concrete has become a global concern. Meanwhile, phosphorus (P) removal from wastewater consumes lots of natural minerals, leading to a heavy burden on the environment. In this study, the cement paste powder (HCPP) was used to remove phosphorus from wastewater. The results indicate that both HCPP and thermally modified HCPP (MHCPP) are effective phosphorus removal materials, with a maximum P-binding capacity of 3.9-mg P/g HCPP and 31.2-mg P/g MHCPP, respectively. The phosphorus removal mechanism of HCPP and MHCPP was also proposed (1) Ca2+ and OH- can release from the surface of the HCPP or MHCPP to wastewater, forming a high-alkaline and Ca-rich solution; (2) hydrolysis of phosphorus species in the high-alkaline solution environment creates HPO42- species; (3) the HPO42- combines with Ca2+ and H2O, resulting in the formation of brushite; (4) the brushite precipitated from wastewater and adhered on the surface of the HCPP or the MHCPP particles. The study provides a new and low-cost material for treatment of phosphorus wastewater. Further, the study also offers a new approach for reusing of waste concrete fines.Including cultural ecosystem services (ES) in the management of an ecosystem can improve the social acceptance and legitimacy of management decisions. In order to adapt to the inherently fragile ecological environment, the Loess Plateau has formed a unique land-use mode and rural cultural landscape, yet the research on the cultural ES in this area is limited. The study of cultural ES from the supply and demand perspective will contribute to realize the sustainable cultural ES supply and meet people's growing demand for a better life. This study conducted a questionnaire survey with 381 people in 42 villages of Shigou Township in the Loess Plateau to explore local residents' demand (perceived importance) of 8 types of cultural ES. The 5-point Likert scale was used to quantify the relative level of residents' demand of cultural ES. Spearman's rank correlation analysis was used to evaluate the correlations between pairs of cultural ES. In addition, this study constructed the indicator system of cultural ES supply from two dimensions of cultural ES supply capacity and accessibility and used a redundancy analysis to explore the linkage between the cultural ES supply and demand. The results showed that residents had a higher demand for esthetics and sense of place, but lower demand for spiritual and religious in Shigou Township. There were significant and positive correlations between different types of cultural ES, and most of them were enjoyed in "bundles." Each type of cultural ES was related to different types of percentage land cover, and geographical distance played an important role in cultural ES supply. Last, we proposed that local residents' perceived importance of cultural ES should be included in decision-making to improve public support for ecosystem management, and managers should simultaneously pay attention to the supply capacity and accessibility of cultural ES to realize the sustainable cultural ES supply.Once released into natural water, the environmental behavior and fate of C60 could inevitably been affected by humic acid (HA), sunlight, and hydrodynamic conditions. However, the combined effects of these factors are not so clear. Therefore, in the present study, effects of HA, sunlight, and agitation intensity on generation and properties of aqu/nC60 were investigated. The results indicated that HA could increase the concentration of aqu/nC60 mainly through the steric hindrance effect. Trichostatin A datasheet The higher agitation intensity led to higher concentrations of aqu/nC60 and more efficient steric stabilization was formed by HA. Sunlight irradiation promoted the surface oxidization and consequently enhanced the dispersion of C60. The relative order of the influence on the UV/vis concentration was sunlight > agitation intensity > HA. In addition, HA might not always enhance the dispersion of aqu/nC60 due to light screening/ROS scavenging, over-coating, or chain-like bridging mechanism. Therefore, evaluating the environmental behavior and fate of C60 should take these factors into account together.Phthalate esters (PAEs) are widely used industrial raw materials that are well known for their environmental contamination and toxicological effects as "endocrine disruptors." In this study, environmental levels of PAEs and eco-toxicological risk assessments were determined in the eight estuaries of the Pearl River (Estuaries), main upstream tributary (Xijiang River), urban river network (River network), and nature reserve reservoir (Reservoirs). Water and sediment samples from the above water systems were collected during the low-water period (May) and the high-water period (August) between 2012 and 2014. Solid phase and ultrasonic methods were used to extract 14 different PAEs that were analyzed by gas chromatography. The analytical average recovery of PAEs in water and sediment was 75.4% ± 4.9% and 121.5% ± 8.9%, respectively. The results showed that PAEs were detected in all of the samples, and the di-n-butyl phtalate (DBP) and benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) monomers had a detection rate of 100% in water. S 990.10 ± 23.33 ng/g-dw, 1084.20 ± 112.12 ng/g-dw, and 1816.89 ± 79.97 ng/g-dw, respectively, with concentrations showing an increasing trend year after year (2014 > 2013 > 2012). Potential risk assessment of water ecological, the results show that exceeding environmental risk level (ERL) value in higher molecular weight plasticizer (DEHP, DMEP, DNOP, DNP) was mainly distributed in water, the lower molecular weight plasticizer (BMP, DiBP) was mainly distributed in sediment. The circular economy contrasts with the traditional linear economy since it presents a sustainable way both to produce goods and services and to contribute to the development of economies. This paper aims to contribute to a better knowledge of the efficiency of resources productivity, a common indicator to compare how circular economies are, through the estimation of the main determinants for the circular economy in Europe. A systematic analysis and comparison of the performance of all the European Union countries was performed to get further insight into their root causes and to help designing future policies towards a more circular European Union economy. With this purpose, a set of determinant factors for a circular economy in Europe were analysed, under the period between 2000 and 2016. A cluster analysis was applied and complemented with three econometric estimation methods panel unit root tests, panel cointegration tests and vector autoregression model. The main findings allowed to cluster European countries into three different groups according to the growth rate of their resources productivity and to explain them according to the selected exploratory factors. Special efforts were made to explain the highest productivity growth group, as a way to find relevant drivers towards sustainable productivity growths.BACKGROUND Submucosal tunneling techniques have expanded the horizon of therapeutic endoscopy. One such procedure, submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection (STER), enables the endoscopic removal of gastrointestinal (GI) sub-epithelial tumors. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of STER in patients with sub-epithelial lesions localized to the upper GI tract. METHODS Consecutive subjects with a sub-epithelial lesion of ≥ 1 cm size in the upper GI tract were enrolled in the study. STER was performed using the standard technique in an endoscopy suite. A modified technique (double-opening STER) was used in cases with difficult en bloc resection of the tumor. Outcome measures included technical success, en bloc resection rates, adverse events, and recurrence. RESULTS A total of 104 patients with sub-epithelial tumors were evaluated for STER. Of them, 44 subjects (mean age 44.68 ± 12.82, 52.3% males) underwent standard STER. Majority (31, 70.4%) of the lesions were located in the esophagus and cardia. Technical success and en bloc removal of the tumor were achieved in 97.7% and 88.4% of cases, respectively. There was no major adverse event. Minor adverse events were recorded in 7 (15.9%) cases. Majority (31, 70.4%) of the tumors originated from muscularis propria, followed by submucosa (8, 18.2%) and muscularis mucosa (5, 11.4%). The most common histological diagnosis was leiomyoma (59.1%) followed by GI stromal tumors (20.4%). At a mean follow up of 12.36 ± 7.63 months, there was no incidence of tumor recurrence in en bloc as well as piecemeal resection groups. CONCLUSION STER is a safe and efficacious procedure for sub-epithelial tumors in the upper GI tract. Novel strategies need to be developed to ensure en bloc removal of large lesions.Overlapping sphincteroplasty for anal sphincter injury is associated with suboptimal long-term results that can be implicated to incomplete repair and neurovascular damage during dissection. This study was done to evaluate endoscopic ultrasound-guided overlapping sphincteroplasty to ensure completeness of sphincter repair intraoperatively and also to protect the integrity of neurovascular bundles. Between January 2014 and October 2015, 15 consecutive women with damaged anal sphincters, who underwent endoscopic ultrasound-guided overlapping sphincteroplasty, were prospectively evaluated (group 1). A control group of seven women, who had undergone classical sphincteroplasty between August 2012 and December 2013, was retrospectively identified (group 2). Perioperative outcomes, anal manometry findings, and fecal incontinence scores of both the groups were analyzed. Median age of patients in group 1 was 28 years (range 21-45) whereas group 2 patients had a median age of 33 years (range 26-35). Group 1 patients were followed up for a median duration of 44 months (range 37-54), and the median follow up duration in group 2 was 62 months (range 55-70).
