In the present study, we simulate the effect of variable cell concentration of Microcystis colonies on the vertical distribution of light in the water column based on experimental estimates of the extinction coefficient of Microcystis colonies. The laboratory observations indicated that higher cell concentration of Microcystis enhance the light attenuation in water column and promotes surface scum formation. We extended an existing model for the light-driven migration of Microcystis by introducing the effect of self-shading and simulated the dynamics of vertical migration for different cell concentrations and different colonial morphologies. The simulation results show that high cell concentrations of Microcystis promote surface scum formation, as well as its persistence throughout diel photoperiods. Large and tight Microcystis colonies facilitate scum formation, while small and loose colonies increase scum stability and persistence. This study reveals a positive feedback regulation of Microcystis surface scum formation and stability by self-shading and provides novel insights into the underlying mechanisms.
The phenotypic variability of NARS2 associated disease is vast, yet not thoroughly explored. We present the phenotypic and genetic features of 2 siblings with early-onset mitochondrial encephalopathy due to pathogenic variant in NARS2, along with the results from a systematic literature review.

Molecular hybridization techniques have been used as a tool in the search for new drugs and was implemented in the present study in an attempt to produce compound candidates to treat malarial infections by CQ-resistant strains. Two groups of molecules were produced from the 4-aminoquinoline ring in conjugation to hydrazones (HQ) and imines (IQ). Physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties were found to be favorable when analyzed in silico and cytotoxicity and antiplasmodial activity were assayed in vitro and in vivo showing low cytotoxicity and selectiveness to the parasites. Candidates IQ5 and IQ6 showed important values of parasite growth inhibition in vivo on the 5th day after infection (IQ5 15 mg/kg = 72.64% and IQ6 15 mg/kg = 71.15% and 25 mg/kg = 93.7%). IQ6 also showed interaction with ferriprotoporphyrin IX similarly to CQ. The process of applying condensation reactions to yield imines is promising and capable of producing molecules with antiplasmodial activity.
Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a lesion of uncertain etiology that involves the synovial membranes of joints or tendon sheaths, representing a diffuse and non-encapsulated form of the more common giant cell tumors of the synovium (GCTTS). PVNS was reclassified to denote a diffuse form of synovial giant cell tumor (TSGCT), while 'giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath (GCTTS)' was used for localized lesions. These pathologies rarely affect the axial skeleton. We provide an unprecedented and extensive systematic review of both lesions highlighting presentation, diagnostic considerations, treatment, prognosis, and outcomes, and we report a short case-series.

We describe two-cases and conduct a systematic review in accordance with PRISMA guidelines.

PVNS was identified in most of the cases reviewed (91.6 %), manifesting predominantly in the cervical spine (40 %). Patients commonly presented with neck pain (59 %), back pain (53 %), and lower back pain (81.2 %) for cervical, thoracic, and lumbar lesions, respectively.
