05); COR levels at 0800 were significantly lower among individuals in the structural etiology group (F = 3.828, p < 0.05). COR levels at 0800 in the negative electroclinical outcome group (668.30 ± 227.42) nmol/L were higher than those in the positive electroclinical outcome group (462.25 ± 249.71) nmol/L.

Our results suggest that the change in COR rhythm is an important pathophysiological characteristic of ESs, suggesting that hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis dysfunction possibly leads to the different manifestations of ESs.

Most seizures during pregnancy occur in women who already have epilepsy. Rarely, some women may have their first seizure during pregnancy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical features and pregnancy outcomes in women with new-onset epilepsy during pregnancy.

112 pregnant women with epilepsy were prospectively evaluated at the Education - Therapeutic Clinic of the Azerbaijan Medical University, in the neurological and maternity departments of the Clinical Medical Center in Baku over a six-year period. Women were regularly followed by a neurologist and obstetrician till the end of pregnancy. To determine the recurrence of seizures during the pregnancy and after delivery, the women were followed up at least once per three months for a one year period after delivery. Dubermatinib Delivery and perinatal outcomes were compared with those of 277 healthy women in the control group (without epilepsy and without registering chronic diseases).

Of the 112 pregnant women with epilepsy, 12 (10.7%) had their fs were not increased compared to women with epilepsy before pregnancy. Neonatal hypoxia was associated with delivery by cesarean section.Match probabilities calculated during the evaluation of DNA evidence profiles rely on appropriate values of the population structure quantity θ. NGS-based methods will enhance forensic identification and with the transformation to such methods comes the need to facilitate NGS-based population genetics analysis. If NGS data are to be used for match probabilities there needs to be a way to accommodate population structure, which requires values for θ for those data. Such estimates have not been available. This study assesses population structure for sequence-based data using a relatively new approach applied to STR data over 27 loci in five different geographic groups. Matching proportions between individuals or groups are used to obtain locus-specific θ estimates as well as estimates per geographic group and a global measure. The results demonstrate similar effects of sequencing data on θ estimates compared to what has been seen for CE-based results.Although human exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) has been associated with in vivo oxidative damage, and hydroxyPAH metabolites have been used as biomarkers to assess PAH-induced oxidative stress, few studies have looked at the likely causative compounds for oxidative stress in humans - PAH quinones. We developed a method using pre-column derivatization - liquid chromatography-heated electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-HESI-MS/MS) to analyze ortho-phenanthrene quinones (PheQs) in human urine. 1,2-PheQ and 3,4-PheQ were identified and quantified in 3 mL of human urine; their total concentrations were higher in cigarette smokers (0.79 ± 0.98 nmol/6h urine) than in nonsmokers (0.20 ± 0.98 nmol/6h urine) (p less then 0.01). The total of 1,2-PheQ and 3,4-PheQ were more strongly correlated with urinary (Z)-7-[1R,2R,3R,5S)-3,5-dihydroxy-2-[(E,3S)-3-hydroxyoct-1-enyl]cyclopentyl]hept-5-enoic acid (8-iso-PGF2α), a biomarker of lipid peroxidation (R2 = 0.53, p less then 0.001), than the other phenanthrene metabolites including phenanthrene tetraol (PheT), phenanthrene-1,2-dihydrodiol (1,2-PheD), and total phenanthrene phenols (OHPhe), consistent with the concept that PheQs and likely other PAH quinones play a causal role in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in humans. Thus, PheQs may be suitable as biomarkers to assess human exposure to oxygenated PAH and the subsequent oxidative damage. This study provides unique support, by analysis of human urinary metabolites, for the PAH quinone mediated oxidative damage hypothesis of PAH carcinogenesis.Harmful cyanobacterial blooms produce lethal toxins in many aquatic ecosystems experiencing eutrophication. This manuscript presents results on the effects of cyanotoxins on the aerobic microbial communities residing at the interface of sediments and water columns with the ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) as the model microbial community. Microcystin-LR (MC-LR), a heavily researched cyanotoxin variant, was used as the model cyanotoxin. To measure cyanotoxin influence on the activity of nitrifying microbial communities, an enriched culture of AOBs collected from an ongoing partial nitrification-nitritation reactor was examined for its exposure to 1, 5 and 10 μg/L of MC-LR. The nitritation kinetics experiment demonstrated MC-LR's ability at 1, 5, and 10 μg/L concentrations to prevent ammonium oxidation with statistically significant differences in nitritation rates between the blanks and spiked samples (One-way ANOVA, p less then 0.05). Significantly decreased dissolved oxygen (DO) consumption during oxygen update batch tests demonstrated toxin's influence on AOB's oxidizing capabilities when exposed to even lower concentrations of 0.75, 0.5, and 0.25 μg/L of MC-LR in a separate set of experiments. Based on competitive kinetics, the MC-LR inhibition coefficient-the concentration needed to produce half-maximum inhibition of the mixed community AOBs was determined to be 0.083 μg/L. The stress tests proved the recovery of nitritation to some extent at lower MC-LR concentrations (1 and 5 μg/L), but significant irreversible inhibition was recorded when the AOB population was exposed to 10 μg/L MC-LR. The comparisons of amoA gene expressions corresponded well with nitrifying kinetics. All concentrations of MC-LR spiking were determined to produce a discernible impact on the AOB nitritation rate by either destroying the bacterial cell or immediately inhibiting the amoA gene expression. One of the current challenges in circular economy is the ability to transform waste into valuable products. In this work, waste of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) was used as a gold source to prepare stable gold nanoparticles (AuNP). The proposed methodology involves a series of physical and chemical separation steps, carefully designed according to the complex nature of the selected WEEE and the targeted product. In a first step, pins from microprocessors were separated by mechanical treatments, allowing to concentrate gold in a metallic fraction. A two-step hydrometallurgical method was subsequently performed, to obtain a Au (III) enriched solution. Such solution was used as a secondary raw material to obtain AuNP. For that purpose, a specific synthetic method was developed, adapted to the high acidity and ionic strength of the solution. Thanks to the use of two easily available reducing agents (sodium citrate and ascorbic acid) and a polymeric stabilizer (PVP), it was possible to obtain high purity AuNP presenting a mixture of well-defined spherical and triangular shapes. These AuNP were finally deposited onto glass substrates and present a sensitive response to refractive index changes in the environment, a necessary condition towards application in optical sensors. In summary, this upcycling case study demonstrates that e-waste can successfully replace primary raw materials to obtain highly valuable and useful nanomaterials. These results highlight the potential of urban mining as a sustainable and circular approach to the development of nanotechnologies.Population growth and unprecedented economic growth and urbanization, especially in low- and middle-income countries, coupled with extreme weather patterns, the high-environmental footprint of agricultural practices, and disposal-oriented waste management practices, require significant changes in the ways we produce food, feed and fuel, and manage enormous amounts of organic wastes. Farming insects such as the black soldier fly (BSF) (Hermetia illucens) on diverse organic wastes provides an opportunity for producing nutrient-rich animal feed, fuel, organic fertilizer, and biobased products with concurrent valorization of wastes. Inclusion of BSF larvae/pupae in the diets of poultry, fish, and swine has shown promise as a potential substitute of conventional feed ingredients such as soybean meal and fish meal. Moreover, the bioactive compounds such as antimicrobial peptides, medium chain fatty acids, and chitin and its derivatives present in BSF larvae/pupae, could also add values to the animal diets. However, to realize the full potential of BSF-based biorefining, more research and development efforts are necessary for scaling up the production and processing of BSF biomass using more mechanized and automated systems. More studies are also needed to ensure the safety of the BSF biomass grown on various organic wastes for animal feed (also food) and legalizing the feed application of BSF biomass to wider categories of animals. This critical review presents the current status of the BSF technology, identifies the research gaps, highlights the challenges towards industrial scale production, and provides future perspectives. We present, rapid and efficient identification of ten different types of post-consumer plastics obtained from a local recycling unit by deploying a low cost, compact CCD spectrometer in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique. For this investigation, spectral emissions were collected by an Echelle spectrograph equipped with an intensified charge-coupled device (ES-ICCD) as well as a non-gated Czerny Turner CCD spectrometer (NCT-CCD). The performance is evaluated by interrogating the samples in a single-shot as well as accumulation mode (ten consecutive laser shots). The results from principal component analysis (PCA) have shown excellent discrimination. Further, the artificial neural network (ANN) analysis has demonstrated that individual identification accuracies/rates up to ~99 % can be achieved. The data acquired with ES-ICCD in the accumulation of ten shots have shown average identification accuracies ~97 %. Nevertheless, similar performance is achieved with the NCT-CCD spectrometer even in a single shot acquisition which reduces the overall analysis time by a factor of ~15 times compared to the ES-ICCD. Furthermore, the detector/collection system size, weight, and cost also can be reduced by ~10 times by employing a NCT-CCD spectrometer. The results have the potential in realizing a compact and low-cost LIBS system for the rapid identification of plastics with higher accuracies for the real-time application.Poultry litter is used as soil amendment or organic fertilizer. While poultry litter is enriched with organic matter suitable for land, the presence of pathogens such as Salmonella in poultry litter is a concern. To investigate the effect of gaseous ozone on pathogen reductions in poultry litter, this study conducted a series of experiments that involved understanding of Salmonella Typhimurium and Escherichia coli O157H7 inactivation at various doses of Ozone (O3) in wet and dry poultry litter conditions. Previously, ozone treatment has been shown to disinfect the surface of foods and plant materials including fruits, juices, and wastewater, however, additional research are needed to better understand the impacts of ozone on treatment of soil amendments. Sanitizing methods capable of eliminating pathogens of soil amendments are crucial to mitigate disease outbreaks related with litter/manure-based fertilizers. In this study, a bench scale continuous ozone treatment system was designed to produce O3 gas, with a range O3 concentrations (7.
