Among hospital-acquired infections, surgical site infections (SSIs) are frequent. SSI in the early post-transplant course poses a relevant threat to transplant recipients.
To determine incidence, risk factors for SSI and its association with post-transplant outcomes and pancreas transplant (P-Tx) recipients.
Adult simultaneous kidney-pancreas transplantation (SPK-T) and P-Tx recipients with a follow-up of at least 90 days were identified in the Swiss Transplant Cohort Study (STCS) dataset. Except for the categorization of SSIs according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) criteria, all other data were prospectively collected. Risk factors for SSI were investigated with logistic regression. A Weibull accelerated failure-time model was applied to address the impact of SSI on length of stay, correcting for transplant-related complications and delayed graft function.
Of 130 transplant recipients, 108 SPK-Tx and 22 P-Tx, 18 (14%) individuals developed SSI within the first 90 days after tranzation after transplantation.
Staphylococcus aureus is associated with significant mortality and increased burden on the healthcare system. Relatively few reliable estimates are available regarding the impact of meticillin-resistant S.aureus (MRSA) infection compared with meticillin-susceptible S.aureus (MSSA) infection.
To compare patients with MRSA infection and MSSA infection to identify differences in inpatient mortality, length of stay and costs of hospital services, and identify predictors of MRSA as a cause of S.aureus infection.
An analytical, retrospective, longitudinal study using non-identifiable linked data on adults admitted to hospitals of a health district in Australia with a diagnosis of S.aureus infection over a 10-year period. The main outcome measure was 30-day inpatient mortality. Secondary endpoints included total overnight stays, all-cause inpatient mortality, and hospitalization costs within 1 year of index admission.
Inpatient mortality at 30, 100 and 365 days was estimated to be significantly greater for patients with MRSA infection. The mean additional cost of MRSA infection when controlling for additional factors was $5988 and 4 nights of additional hospital stay per patient within 1 year of index admission. Key predictors of MRSA infection were date of index admission; higher comorbidity score; greater socio-economic disadvantage; admission to hospital other than via the emergency department; older age; and prior admission to hospital within 28 days of index admission.
MRSA infection is associated with increased inpatient mortality, costs and hospital length of stay compared with MSSA infection. Efforts are required to alleviate the additional burden of MRSA infection on patients and healthcare systems.

There is a growing amount of evidence to suggest that inflammation may have a role in the onset and prognosis of psychiatric disorders. We reviewed the literature of studies investigating neutrophil-lymphocyte ratios (NLR), a biomarker of inflammation, in both adult and youth psychiatric populations. The limitations of NLR, in addition to the potential mechanisms underlying its relationship with psychiatric disorders, are also discussed.
Unlike in the general population, NLR is elevated in a proportion of adult patients with schizophrenia, major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder, though associations with symptom severity and other clinical parameters are less clear. Our current study attempted to understand the molecular-level interactions between the human genes in different organs during systematic candidiasis. Our research findings have shed light on the molecular events that occur during Candidiasis in organs such as the kidney, liver, and spleen. The differentially expressed genes (up and down-regulated) in each organ will aid in designing organ-specific therapeutic protocols for systemic candidiasis. We observed organ-specific immune responses such as the development of the acute phase response in the liver; TGF-pathway and genes involved in lymphocyte activation, and leukocyte proliferation in the kidney. We have also observed that in the kidney, filament production, up-regulation of iron acquisition mechanisms, and metabolic adaptability are aided by the late initiation of innate defense mechanisms, which is likely related to the low number of resident immune cells and the sluggish recruitment of new effector cells. Our findings point to major pathways that play essential roles in specific organs during systemic candidiasis. Although thought to have overlapping functions, RAS isoforms show preferential activation in human tumors, which prompted us to employ a comparative and quantitative proteomics approach to generate isoform-specific and nucleotide-dependent interactomes of the four RAS isoforms, KRAS4A, KRAS4B, HRAS, and NRAS. Many isoform-specific interacting proteins were identified, including HRAS-specific CARM1 and CHK1 and KRAS-specific PIP4K2C and IPO7. Comparing the interactomes of WT and constitutively active G12D mutant of RAS isoforms, we identified several potential previously unknown effector proteins of RAS, one of which was recently reported while this article was in preparation, RADIL. These interacting proteins play important roles as knockdown or pharmacological inhibition leads to potent inhibition of cancer cells. The HRAS-specific interacting protein CARM1 plays a role in HRAS-induced senescence, with CARM1 knockdown or inhibition selectively increasing senescence in HRAS-transformed cells but not in KRAS4B-transformed cells. The effects of caffeine-treated immune cells transplantation on neuronal density, production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and a number of cytokines in the hippocampus of depressive-like syngeneic animals were studied. In depressive-like recipients, an increase in the density of pyramidal neurons in CA1 and CA3 hippocampal regions, accompanied with augmented level of BDNF, decreased levels of pro-inflammatory (IL-1β, IL-6, INF-γ, and TNF-α) and increased levels of anti-inflammatory (IL-10 and IL-4) cytokines was found. It is well documented that coal combustion detrimentally affected air quality, yet the contribution of coal mining activity to air pollution is still largely unknown. Homing pigeons have been applied to assess the occurrence of atmospheric pollutants within cities. Herein, we sampled homing pigeons from both urban and mining areas in a typical coal industry city (Datong, China) as biomonitors for assessing local air pollution. Target organic contaminants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were frequently detected in lung, liver, and fat tissues of the pigeons. The pollutants were predominately accumulated in lung, validating that respiration was the main accumulation route for these compounds in homing pigeons. In addition, pathological damage examination in lung and liver tissues revealed that the exposure to atmospheric pollutants impaired pigeon health. While the concentrations of PCBs and OCPs were similar in pigeons from urban and mining areas, the concentrations of PAHs were higher in pigeons from urban area. In contrast, more elevated levels of PBDEs (particularly BDE-209) were found in the mining area, which was consistent with the greater pathological damages and particulate matter levels. Unlike coal combustion, coal mining activities did not increase atmospheric PAH exposure to homing pigeons, but intensified PBDE contamination along with increasing emission of particulate matters. Overall, homing pigeons are promising biomonitors for assessing the respiratory exposure and risk of atmospheric pollutants within cities.
