Pinning potentials were also estimated, near the critical temperature, from AC susceptibility measurements, their values being close to those resulted (at the same temperature and DC field) from the magnetization relaxation data.Lignin is a natural and renewable aromatic polymer, but only about 2% of lignin is utilized with high added value. Polydispersity and heterogeneity are the key reasons for the difficulty in separation, fractionation, characterization, purification and utilization of lignin. However, the molecular weight of lignin is still described from the overall perspective of number-/weight-average molecular weight (Mn and Mw), which if far from enough to understand the heterogeneous and dispersed lignin. To provide a tool for understanding the molecular weight of lignin from a molecular perspective, an integral method for quantifying the molecular characteristics of lignin molecules at arbitrary molecular intervals on the molecular weight distribution curve of lignin was established. The molecular contents of wheat straw lignin as well as its soluble and insoluble fractions at different intervals were calculated. The ease of fractionation of small molecules with weights lower than 8000 g/mol into soluble fractions, and that of large molecules with weights higher than 10,000 g/mol into insoluble fractions were quantitatively analyzed. The established integral method will significantly help in the understanding the properties of lignin at the molecular-level, as well as the fractionation and utilization of lignin. This study analyzed severe acute endometritis action on myometrial density and distribution of protein gene product (PGP)9.5- and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-like immunoreactive nerve fibers and calcitonin receptor-like receptor (CLR) expression, and on CGRP receptor (CGRPR) participation in uterine contractility in pigs. E. coli suspension (E. coli group) or saline (SAL group) were injected into the uteri, or only laparotomy was performed (CON group). In the E. coli group myometrium, a lack of significant changes in PGP9.5 and CGRP innervation patterns and increased CLR protein level were revealed. In all groups, compared to the pretreatment period, human αCGRP increased amplitude in the myometrium, while reducing it in endometrium/myometrium. In the E. coli group endometrium/myometrium, human αCGRP lowered amplitude vs other groups. Human αCGRP reduced frequency in CON and SAL groups and enhanced it in the E. coli group endometrium/myometrium. The frequency in E. coli group increased vs other groups. CGRPR antagonist, human αCGRP8-37, reversed (CON, SAL groups) and eliminated (E. coli group) the rise in human αCGRP-induced myometrial amplitude. In endometrium/myometrium, human αCGRP8-37 abolished (CON group) and reversed (SAL group) a decrease in frequency, and reduced the rise in frequency (E. coli group) caused by human αCGRP. Collectively, in the myometrium, endometritis did not change PGP9.5 and CGRP innervation patterns and enhanced CLR protein level. CGRPR also mediated in CGRP action on inflamed uterus contractility.
During the COVID-19 pandemic there has been a strong interest in forecasts of the short-term development of epidemiological indicators to inform decision makers. In this study we evaluate probabilistic real-time predictions of confirmed cases and deaths from COVID-19 in Germany and Poland for the period from January through April 2021.
We evaluate probabilistic real-time predictions of confirmed cases and deaths from COVID-19 in Germany and Poland. These were issued by 15 different forecasting models, run by independent research teams. Moreover, we study the performance of combined ensemble forecasts. Evaluation of probabilistic forecasts is based on proper scoring rules, along with interval coverage proportions to assess calibration. The presented work is part of a pre-registered evaluation study.
We find that many, though not all, models outperform a simple baseline model up to four weeks ahead for the considered targets. Ensemble methods show very good relative performance. The addressed time period ime horizons. Additional data sources including sequencing and mobility data, which were not extensively used in the present study, may help to improve performance.Insufficient homogeneity is one of the pressing problems in nanocomposites' production as it largely impairs the properties of materials with relatively high filler concentration. Within this work, it is demonstrated how selected mixing techniques (magnetic mixer stirring, calendaring and microfluidization) affect filler distribution in poly(dimethylsiloxane)-graphene based nanocomposites and, consequently, their properties. The differences were assessed via imaging and thermal techniques, i.a. Raman spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry. As microfluidization proved to provide the best homogenization, it was used to prepare nanocomposites of different filler concentration, whose structural and thermal properties were investigated. The results show that the concentration of graphene significantly affects polymer chain mobility, grain sizes, defect density and cross-linking level. Both factors considered in this work considerably influence thermal stability and other features which are crucial for application in electronics, EMI shielding, thermal interface materials etc. This manuscript reports an impressive and facile strategy for synthesizing isoxazole derivatives using immobilized Cu (I) in metformin-functionalized β-cyclodextrin as a catalyst. The architecture of this catalyst was characterized by different analytical techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, Field emission scanning electron microscopy, and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The catalyst showed remarkable reusability even after 7 consecutive runs.Anterior cervical discectomy with artificial disc replacement (ADR) is an effective treatment of cervical degenerative disc disease. However, postoperative MRI due to recurrent neck/radicular pain is limited due to severe metallic artifacts of artificial disc instrument. Multiacquisition with variable resonance image combination selective T2 (MAVRIC SL T2) has been developed as an MRI technique for metal artifact reduction but has not been evaluated for the postoperative cervical spine with ADR. DL-Buthionine-(S In our study, we compared MAVRIC SL T2 with the fast spin echo (FSE) T2-weighted sequence (T2WI), which was an essential MR sequence for evaluation of the cervical neural structure, for metallic artifact reduction in the post-operative cervical spine with ADR. Our study revealed MAVRIC SL T2 showed smaller signal void areas, less distortion and signal pile-up, and was more clinically useful than T2WI (p less then 0.05). The spinal cord, vertebral bodies, both neural foramina, and anterior paravertebral soft tissue were significantly more visible with MAVRIC SL T2 than with T2WI (p less then 0.05). MAVRIC SL T2 might be a useful technique for the evaluation of postoperative cervical spine with ADR and complements T2WI in the evaluation of the spinal cord and nerve roots which were important structures for post-operative recurrent neck/radicular pain.Retinal ganglion cells initiating the magnocellular/Y-cell visual pathways respond nonlinearly to high spatial frequencies (SFs) and temporal frequencies (TFs). This nonlinearity is implicated in the processing of contrast modulation (CM) stimuli in cats and monkeys, but its contribution to human visual perception is not well understood. Here, we evaluate human psychophysical performance for CM stimuli, consisting of a high SF grating carrier whose contrast is modulated by a low SF sinewave envelope. Subjects reported the direction of motion of CM envelopes or luminance modulation (LM) gratings at different eccentricities. The performance on SF (for LMs) or carrier SF (for CMs) was measured for different TFs (LMs) or carrier TFs (CMs). The best performance for LMs was at lower TFs and SFs, decreasing systematically with eccentricity. However, performance with CMs was bandpass with carrier SF, largely independent of carrier TF, and at the highest carrier TF (20 Hz) decreased minimally with eccentricity. Since the nonlinear subunits of Y-cells respond better at higher TFs compared to the linear response components and respond best at higher SFs that are relatively independent of eccentricity, these results suggest that behavioral tasks employing CM stimuli might reveal nonlinear contributions of retinal Y-like cells to human perception.Phototherapy is the main treatment of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia to prevent encephalopathy. It is generally believed to be safe; however, some studies have shown it might be associated with cancer development. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to assess the effect of neonatal phototherapy on future cancer risk. A systematic search in 13 databases was conducted in December 2018 and updated in August 2022 to identify studies that report cancer development after exposure to phototherapy. Throughout the study period, regular manual searches were also conducted to include new studies. A meta-analysis using R programming language was done in which the odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated and pooled using the reported adjusted and unadjusted data. Fifteen studies were included. A statistically significant association was detected between neonatal phototherapy and any type of cancer (OR 1.24; 95% CI 1.1, 1.4), any hematopoietic cancer (OR 1.49; 95% CI 1.17, 1.91), any leukemia (OR 1.35; 95% CI 1.08, 1.67), and myeloid leukemia (OR 2.86; 95% CI 1.4, 5.84). The other investigated cancers (lymphoid leukemia, Hodgkin's lymphoma, kidney cancer, nervous system cancer, and skin cancer) were not associated with phototherapy. Conclusions Phototherapy may carry a possible risk of future cancers. Future research is needed to quantify the magnitude of the cancer risk. These future studies should consider predictors of preterm birth or exclude premature babies from their analysis. What is Known • There were various reports about the possible association between phototherapy in neonates and the increased risk of cancer in the future. What is New • A statistically significant association between phototherapy and various hematopoietic cancers (especially myeloid leukemia) was recorded. • The effect of the duration of phototherapy on the increased risk of hematopoietic cancers is yet unclear.
Unnecessary radiation exposure (URE) during radiographic examination is an issue among infants in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). The causes of URE have not been fully explored. This study investigated the incidence and identified the causes of URE in infants during diagnostic radiography in a NICU. This was a retrospective cohort study. We retrieved and analysed requests and radiographs taken at a tertiary NICU between September and November 2018. URE was defined as the rate of discordance between requests and images taken (DisBRI) and unnecessary radiation exposure in irrelevant regions (UREIR) during radiography. We compared the rates of URE between very low-birth-weight (VLBW, birth weight < 1500g) infants and non-VLBW infants. A total of 306 radiographs from 88 infants were taken. The means ± standard deviations (SDs) of gestational age and birth weight were 35.7 ± 3.6weeks and 2471 ± 816g, respectively. Each infant underwent an average of 3.5 radiographs. The DisBRI rate was 1.3% and was mostly related to poor adherence to requests.
