Link and Elite Properties
Elite properties are homes that have been enhanced in a variety of ways to increase their value. These enhancements include the addition of amenities such as a home theater, wine cellar, and library to give a home a luxurious feel. They also include physical upgrades such as paint, flooring, and appliances. These improvements may be done to appeal to a certain type of buyer or to create a space that meets the needs of a specific lifestyle. A second line of argument against Link focuses on the fact that a candidate scientifically elite law can be identified with a wide range of possible equations, and so there are many different candidates for metaphysically elite properties. In such cases, the defender of Link can simply replace the metaphysically non-elite properties with their translations into elite terms (assuming a background picture on which non-elite and elite properties are connected by chains of definition; see Section 3.3).

This approach makes sense, in particular, for a theory that asserts that fundamental physical laws are not just extrinsic, but rather that they have no intrinsic or undefined parts at all. Such a theory could be expected to posit a set of metaphysically non-elite properties that are the translations of intrinsic and undefined parts of basic particles, so that the law would be a straightforward application of the particle’s equation, assuming the particle itself is fundamental.

However, if we were to accept this kind of argument, it would rob Link of its substance, and it would also imply that a connection between the scientifically elite laws and the metaphysically elite properties is not possible. It might be more natural to adopt a more holistic version of the argument, in which one is committed to treating a property as metaphysically elite only when it is a part of a scientifically elite theory that invokes it (see Section 3.4).

A final point about these two strategies is that they both rely on a form of term objectivism. This form of term objectivism aims to make it possible for the defender of a scientifically elite theory to identify the mathematically equivalent candidate for that theory’s fundamental law by examining the shortest definition of the fundamental law. This might be seen as a way to avoid the problems associated with a metaphysically non-elite property, but it has the disadvantage of making the list of fundamental properties too long, which could be viewed as a further problem with metaphysically elite properties.
