Osteocytes play a role as mechanosensory cells by sensing flow-induced mechanical stimuli applied on their cell processes. High-resolution imaging of osteocyte processes and the canalicular wall are necessary for the analysis of this mechanosensing mechanism. Focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) enabled the visualization of the structure at the nanometer scale with thousands of serial-section SEM images. We applied machine learning for the automatic semantic segmentation of osteocyte processes and canalicular wall and performed a morphometric analysis using three-dimensionally reconstructed images.

Six-week-old-mice femur were used. MM-102 mw Osteocyte processes and canaliculi were observed at a resolution of 2nm/voxel in a 4 × 4μm region with 2000 serial-section SEM images. Machine learning was used for automatic semantic segmentation of the osteocyte processes and canaliculi from serial-section SEM images. The results of semantic segmentation were evaluated using the dice similarity coefficient (DSC). The segmented data were reconstructed to create three-dimensional images and a morphological analysis was performed.

The DSC was > 83%. Using the segmented data, a three-dimensional image of approximately 3.5μm in length was reconstructed. The morphometric analysis revealed that the median osteocyte process diameter was 73.8 ± 18.0nm, and the median pericellular fluid space around the osteocyte process was 40.0 ± 17.5nm.

Given the negative stereotypes concerning overweight people's physical abilities, we expected overweight avatar embodiment to have a negative impact on performance in the locomotor imagery task. Thirty-five healthy-weight participants, with a body mass index between 16.5 and 30 at the time of the experiment or in the past, embodied both a healthy-weight avatar and an overweight avatar on two different experimental sessions while performing the imagery task (walking four different distances on two different slopes). In accordance with our hypothesis, participants took longer to perform the locomotor imagery task when embodying an overweight avatar than when embodying a healthy-weight one (the "avatar effect")-especially so when the distance to be covered was long. We conclude that, as has already been reported for people with anorexia nervosa, considering one's own body to be fatter than it really is leads to congruent weight-related behavior.
Gastric electrical stimulation (GES) and laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) are known therapeutic options for medically refractory gastroparesis (MRG) although there are limited data comparing their outcomes. We aim to compare clinical outcomes between patients undergoing GES vs upfront LG for the treatment of MRG while examining factors associated with GES failure and conversion to LG.

We retrospectively analyzed 181 consecutive patients who underwent GES or LG for MRG at our institution from January 2003 to December 2017. Data collection consisted of chart review and follow-up telephone survey. Statistical analysis utilized Chi-squared, ANOVA, and multivariable logistic regression.

Overall, 130 (72%) patients underwent GES and 51 (28%) LG as primary intervention. GES patients were more likely to have diabetic gastroparesis (GES 67% vs LG 39%, p < 0.001), while primary LG patients were more likely to have post-surgical gastroparesis (GES 5% vs LG 43%, p < 0.001). Postoperatively, primary LG pareatment of MRG was associated with worse outcomes compared to LG. Post-surgical etiology was associated with an increased likelihood of GES failure, and in such patients, upfront gastrectomy may be a superior alternative to GES. Further studies are needed to determine patient selection for operative treatment of MRG.In this study, leaves of the evergreen holm oak Quercus ilex were used to assess airborne contamination of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) at five towns located on the slopes of the Mt. Amiata (central Italy), an area with a long history of mining and, more recently, an important district for the industrial exploitation of geothermal energy. PTE composition and covariance of washed and unwashed Q. ilex leaves of three different ages (6, 12 and 24 month-old) were used to identify atmospheric inputs of PTEs at residential areas, evaluate long-term adsorption and retention of PTEs by the leaves, thus providing an indication of potential human exposure. Moreover, the determination of foliar concentrations of major elements (C, N, S and P) allowed an assessment of the nutritional status of the investigated urban tree stands which excluded the existence of stress condition caused by air pollution or other disturbances. Results indicated that overall Pb, Cu, and Cd concentration were low in the investigated urban sites, if compared with similar studies conducted in larger Italian cities, denoting a low contribution of vehicular traffic to the atmospheric pathway. The five urban settlements were characterized by a specific profile of elements (Al, Ba, Hg and Sb) enriched in unwashed leaves, resulting from the distinct geochemical characteristics of the area and from diffuse (i.e., urban activity) and point sources of PTEs emission (i.e., brownfields, geothermal power plants). The latter sources primarily govern the distribution of Hg, whose contamination was found to be very localized close to a major abandoned mining area. Our data provided quantitative evidence of the spectrum of PTEs potentially impacting resident population and may prove useful in support of follow-up instrumental monitoring campaigns of air quality, as well as for human health and ecological risk assessments.
It has been reported that acute stroke services were compromised during COVID-19 due to various pandemic-related issues. We aimed to investigate these changes by recruiting centers from different countries.

Eight countries participated in this cross-sectional, observational, retrospective study by providing data from their stroke data base. We compared 1year before to 1year during COVID-19 as regards onset to door (OTD), door to needle (DTN), door to groin (DTG), duration of hospital stay, National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) at baseline, 24h, and at discharge as well as modified Rankin score (mRS) on discharge and at 3months follow-up.

During the pandemic year, there was a reduction in the number of patients, median age was significantly lower, admission NIHSS was higher, hemorrhagic stroke increased, and OTD and DTG showed no difference, while DTN time was longer, rtPA administration was decreased, thrombectomy was more frequent, and hospital stay was shorter. mRS was less favorable on discharge and at 3months.

We tested whether a counselor-led couple education and counseling intervention dubbed Waya (paternal aunt) would improve marital satisfaction and reduce HIV risk behavior among married couples in Kisumu County, western Kenya. In a pre-post design, we enrolled 60 heterosexual married couples at high risk for HIV to undergo five 1-h couple education and counseling sessions over 56 days. We collected self-reported data on marital satisfaction, the number of sex partners, and condom use with extramarital partners at pre- and post-intervention visits. We used Wilcoxon and McNemar tests to examine the association of our intervention with marital relationship satisfaction and reduction in HIV risk sexual behavior. The intervention was associated with marital relationship satisfaction score improvement from a median of 5 (interquartile range [IQR], 4-5) to 6 (IQR, 6-7) among men and 4 (IQR, 3-5) to 6 (IQR, 5-6) among women (p  less then  .01). The intervention was also associated with reducing HIV risk sexual behaviors depicted by a reduction in the number of sex partners in the past one month and an increase in consistent extramarital condom use. The number of sex partners reduced from a median of 2 (IQR, 1-2) to 1 (IQR, 1-2) and consistent extramarital condom use increased from 4% at baseline to 56% among men. Our intervention was associated with improvements in marital relationship satisfaction and reductions in HIV high-risk behaviors necessary for achieving epidemic control in HIV hotspots such as fishing communities in western Kenya.
Thyroid eye disease (TED), an autoimmune orbital disorder, follows a time-of-onset bimodal peak 40-44 and 60-64years for women, 45-49 and 65-69years for men. TED, however, can also commence in old age. The study's purpose was to evaluate TED in octo- and nonagenarians.

Medical records of 19 ≥ 80years geriatric patients at time of diagnosis were compared to 122 TED patients, aged 20-79. A second analysis was performed after subdividing the control group into two age groups, ≤ 40 ("young group," 16 patients) and 41-79years ("middle-aged group," 106 patients).

The geriatric group's mean age was 84years (80-94), 11 males and 8 females. Mean follow-up time was 16months. Compared to the controls, the geriatric patients smoked less (p = 0.012), were more often hypothyroid (p = 0.019), and had concurrent myasthenia gravis (p = 0.02) at time of diagnosis. Diplopia was the most common presenting symptom among the elderly (p = 0.005) and proptosis among the controls, specifically the young group (p = 0.027). Bilat involvement. This single-group, retrospective, pre-test-post-test study was performed to examine clinical outcomes in treating obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) with tonsillectomy alone and had the longest follow-up periods to date.

We analysed 151 tonsillectomies in our district between the years 2004 and 2018 that had either sleep apnoea or snoring listed as a diagnosis. Twenty-one patients met our criteria and were included. Patient records were analysed for home sleep apnoea test and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) scores.

We defined success as a > 50% reduction of the Apnoea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) and a total AHI of < 20 post-surgery. The averages before surgery were an AHI of 22.3 and an ESS of 7.22. The success rate was 47.6% after tonsillectomy as the sole treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea in our adult population. Eleven patients were non-responders. The average ESS score reduction was 0.69 and did not reach statistical significance. With follow-up times ranging from 1.8 to 171months, this study had the longest follow-up period compared to other existing studies.
