Surgical resection is the best option for the treatment of early-stage lung cancer. However, older patients are less likely to receive curative treatment. Therefore, we compared long-term survival rates between surgical resection and stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) for the treatment of early-stage lung cancer in older patients.

From 2013 to 2016, 272 patients aged ≥75 years with clinical stage I lung cancer underwent surgical resection (n = 191) or SABR (n = 81). A propensity score-matched analysis was performed. Overall survival, cumulative incidence of cancer-related death and recurrence were compared between the 2 groups.

In the matched cohort, 48 well-balanced pairs were extracted. An overall survival benefit was associated with surgery (surgery vs SABR = 65.9% vs 40.3%; P = 0.034); however, there was no significant difference in the cumulative incidence of cancer-related death (P = 0.089) or recurrence (P = 0.111) between the 2 groups. Systemic dissemination was the dominant pattern of progression in both groups. The 3-year cumulative incidence of regional recurrence was significantly higher in the SABR group compared to the surgery group (surgery vs SABR = 0% vs 11.4%, P = 0.046).

Percutaneous pulmonary valve prostheses and right ventricle-to-pulmonary artery conduits are at risk for infective endocarditis (IE). In children and adults with a congenital heart disease, a pulmonary valve implant is frequently necessary. Prosthetic valve endocarditis is a conservatively barely manageable, serious life-threatening condition. We investigated the results of surgical pulmonary valve replacements in patients with IE.

A total of 20 patients with congenital heart disease with the definite diagnosis of IE between March 2013 and July 2020 were included in this single institutional, retrospective review. Infected conduits were 11 Melody, 5 Contegra, 3 homografts and 1 Matrix P Plus. All of the infected prosthetic material was removed from the right ventricular outflow tract up to the pulmonary bifurcation. To compare the effects of DASH-style diets emphasizing different macronutrient proportions on serum urate reduction.

We conducted a secondary analysis of the Optimal Macronutrient Intake Trial to Prevent Heart Disease feeding study, a 3-period, crossover design, randomized trial of adults with prehypertension or hypertension. Participants were provided with 3 DASH-style diets in random order, each for 6 wk. Each DASH-style diet emphasized different macronutrient proportions a carbohydrate-rich (CARB) diet, a protein-rich (PROT) diet, and an unsaturated fat-rich (UNSAT) diet. In the PROT diet, approximately half of the protein came from plant sources. We compared the effects of these diets on serum urate at weeks 4 and 6 of each feeding period.

A nested case-control study using data from the nationwide DANBIO register and Danish healthcare registers. Cases were patients who died and corresponding to the date of death, matched on sex, year of birth and calendar period at the time of death with up to five controls. Exposure of interest was mean pain intensity reported during the time followed in routine rheumatology practice. Pain intensity was measured using a visual analogue scale from 0 to 100 and conditional logistic regression was used to calculate odds of mortality per 5 unit increase in pain while adjusting for confounders.
