The effects of Ramadan fasting (RF) on cardiometabolic risk factors in patients with stable ischemic heart disease are not well known.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of RF on lipid profile and cardiovascular risk factors in patients with a stable coronary heart disease.

A prospective observational study carried out in the Cardiology department of Charles Nicolle Hospital (Tunisia). Eighty-four patients with a stable ischemic heart disease who intended to fast were enrolled during May 2020. Detailed clinical and biochemical assessments were performed before and after the holy month. Parameters of glycemic control, lipid profile, ultrasensitive C-reactive protein concentration (us-CRP) and homocysteine were performed before- and after- Ramadan (BR and AR, respectively).

Eighty-four patients including 79 males and 5 females, with a mean age of 57±7 years completed the study. Levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and apoprotein A were significantly improved AR fasting in comparison with their BR values. There was a significant decrease in blood fasting glucose, insulin level, Homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance index and in us-CRP level.

In patients with stable ischemic heart disease, RF may be accompanied by an improvement of lipid profile and glycemic parameters without increase in coronary events.

This study aimed to assess the factors associated with tooth loss in an adult population in Guanajuato, Mexico.

This cross-sectional study included individuals enrolled in a community program (2014-2016). Data were gathered through closed-ended questions about sociodemographic characteristics such as sex, age, and schooling. Oral hygiene practices, self-perceived oral health, dental visits during the last 12 months, smoking habits, and diabetes status of the participants were also recorded. A clinical evaluation was performed for each person to register decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMF-t). Descriptive statistics, bivariate analysis, and negative binomial models were used to identify variables associated with the number of missing teeth.

A total of 1640 persons were included in the study. The mean age was 41.6 (±15.4) years; 63.6% were female; and 52.7% had at least 1 missing tooth, with a mean of 2.9 (+4.6) missing teeth. The mean number of missing teeth increased by 5% per year relative to age. Females (relative ratio [RR] = 1.40), smokers (RR = 1.56), people with diabetes who smoke (RR = 3.62), and people who rated their oral health as fair or poor (RR = 1.2) had higher mean values of missing teeth. In contrast, individuals who achieved a high school degree (or above) (RR = 0.81), practiced daily toothbrushing (RR = 0.63), or practiced regular toothbrushing and flossing (RR = 0.65) had fewer missing teeth.

More than half of the population has at least 1 missing tooth. The number of missing teeth is higher in individuals with diabetes and unhealthy habits such as smoking. Good oral hygiene practices play an essential role in preventing tooth loss.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of an interprofessional oral hygiene support program for elderly inpatients and the perception of caregivers of the elderly towards oral health care.

Participants comprised 37 elderly inpatients requiring nursing care (17 males, 20 females; mean age, 83.3 ± 4.9 years) and 29 registered nurses who participated in the interprofessional oral health care support program as a caregiver (4 males, 25 females; mean age, 45.2 ± 10.3 years). In this program, inpatients received daily oral cleaning by registered nurses based on each patient's oral health care plan. The number of microbes on the tongue surface of the inpatients was measured once a week for 12 weeks. Additionally, as an investigation of the perception of the caregivers towards oral health care, a questionnaire about the required frequency and duration for oral cleaning was conducted with registered nurses before and after the program to investigate the perception of the caregivers towards oral health care.

Significant differences were observed in the number of microbes on the tongue surface between baseline and at every measurement after the beginning of this program, except for the first week. The mean required frequency and duration for oral cleaning by registered nurses at baseline were 1.5 ± 0.8 times and 3.8 ± 2.2 minutes, whereas those after the program were 2.7 ± 0.7 times and 5.8 ± 2.9 minutes, respectively.

Implementation of the program decreased the number of microbes on the tongue surface of the elderly inpatients and improved the perception of their caregivers towards oral health care.

Dermatologists may be asked about these topics, but despite regulatory labelling constraints and the proliferation of specialized sites and applications, they do not always have access to reliable information. It is for this reason that we are providing the present overview of current knowledge on the subject.Lean Meat Yield (LMY, %) of carcass is an important industry trait, which currently is not routinely measured in Australian beef abattoirs. Objective on-line technology to determine LMY is key for wider adoption. This paper presents a proof-of-concept approach for estimating the LMY of beef carcasses from the 3D information provided by RGB-D cameras. Moreover, a specifically designed on-line data acquisition system for abattoir applications is presented, consisting of three cameras moving on a scanning rig to generate 3D carcass side reconstructions. The hindquarter is then segmented consistently across all the 3D models to extract curvature information and LMY estimated via non-linear regression based on Gaussian Process models. Sides from 119 carcasses at two different commercial abattoirs were used to evaluate this approach. Results from this preliminary study (RMSE = 3.91%, R2 = 0.69) using curvature, P8 fat and HSCW indicate that 3D imaging of beef carcasses is a viable and relatively accurate technology to estimate LMY.
