Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for Wide spread Lupus Erythematosus: The Mixed-Methods Initial Randomized Controlled Trial of an Designed Protocol.
37), or in-hospital mortality (45.5% vs 36.8%; P = .58). The percentage of time activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) was within the therapeutic range was higher with bivalirudin (50% vs 85.7%; P = .007). CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that UFH and bivalirudin are associated with similar rates of thrombosis, major bleeding, and mortality events in patients supported by ECMO. However, it was observed that bivalirudin consistently maintained aPTT within the therapeutic range in comparison to UFH. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.We investigated incidence, characteristics and outcome of patients with macrofocal multiple myeloma (MFMM) treated mainly with novel therapies. Based on definition (BMPCs less then 20% and lytic lesions/plasmacytomas, without anemia, renal insufficiency or hypercalcemia) we identified 140 patients with MFMM, among 4650 myeloma patients (3%). Twice the number of patients with typical myeloma were used as controls; 60% were  less then 65 years and 70% had advanced bone disease. Plasmacytomas were more frequent in MFMM compared with standard myeloma (68% vs 15%, P less then  .05). Adverse prognostic parameters (high lactate dehydrogenase, advanced stage, high risk cytogenetics, immunoparesis) were less common in patients with MFMM compared with controls (P less then  .05); 90% received novel agents and 47% underwent autologous transplantation upfront; 90% achieved an objective response; 70% had at least very good partial response which was significantly higher compared with controls (P less then  .05). After a median follow-up of 52 months, 33 patients have died. Early death ( less then 12 months) was infrequent in MFMM. Median progression-free survival and overall survival (OS) were 46 and 129 months respectively, both significantly longer compared with controls (P less then  .001). Proteasome inhibitor (PI)-based therapy was the only independent predictor for OS in the multivariate analysis (HR 3.9; P less then  .001). 4-Aminobutyric solubility dmso In conclusion, MFMM is a distinct entity presented in young and elderly subjects, characterized by limited bone marrow infiltration, advanced bone disease and frequent presence of plasmacytomas; MFMM patients have less often adverse prognostic features and achieve excellent responses and prolonged OS especially when treated with PI-based therapies. Novel imaging will help in a more accurate classification of this entity. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.Chitosan with higher molecular weight exhibited higher antimicrobial efficacy against foodborne pathogens. However, the poor water solubility of higher or medium molecular weight chitosan limits its applications. To overcome the challenge, our research team searched for simple preparation procedure for fast-dissolving medium molecular weight chitosan in water. Throughout the process, we were able to obtain a higher concentration of medium molecular weight water-soluble (MMWWS) chitosan (400 kDa). The MMWWS chitosan showed physicochemical properties that are suitable for edible coating. Antibacterial activities of 400-kDa chitosan coating prepared in acetic acid (1% v/v) or aspartic acid (1% or 3% w/v) were examined. The surface of catfish cubes was inoculated with six foodborne pathogens and then coated with chitosan solutions. The survival of each pathogen was evaluated during shelf life storage. Compared with the control, 3% w/v chitosan coating in aspartic acid solution exhibited the most effective antibacterial activities among other coating treatments, completely inhibiting Vibrio parahaemolyticus on the surface of catfish. The study suggested that chitosan dissolved in aspartic acid has the potential for use as an alternative antimicrobial coating for catfish fillet. © 2020 The Society for Applied Microbiology.Parkinson's disease (PD) is the most common movement neurodegenerative disorder. Although our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of pathogenesis in PD has greatly expanded, this knowledge thus far has failed to translate into disease-modifying therapies. Therefore, it is of the utmost urgency to interrogate further the multifactorial etiology of PD. DNA repair defects cause many neurodegenerative diseases. An exciting new PD research avenue is the role that DNA damage and repair may play in neuronal death. The goal of this mini-review was to discuss the evidence for the types of DNA damage that accumulates in PD, which has provided clues for which DNA repair pathways, such as DNA double-strand break repair, are dysfunctional. We further highlight compelling data for activation of the DNA damage response in familial and idiopathic PD. The significance of DNA damage and repair is emerging in the PD field and linking these insights to PD pathogenesis may provide new insights into PD pathophysiology and consequently lead to new therapies. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.To study the impact of climate variables on morbidity of some diseases in Mexico, we propose a spatiotemporal varying coefficients regression model. For that we introduce a new spatiotemporal-dependent process prior, in a Bayesian context, with identically distributed normal marginal distributions and joint multivariate normal distribution. We study its properties and characterise the dependence induced. Our results show that the effect of climate variables, on the incidence of specific diseases, is not constant across space and time and our proposed model is able to capture and quantify those changes. © 2020 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.Sox8, encoding a SRY-related HMG box transcription factor, is essential in Sertoli cells for germ cell differentiation via regulation of integrity of the blood-testis barrier (BTB) as well as Sertoli-germ cell adhesion. Inactivation of Sox8 gene in mice causes postnatal progressive spermatogenic failure, resulting in male infertility. This study aims to investigate whether variants of SOX8 contribute to pathogenesis of idiopathic non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) or oligozoospermia. A case-control genetic study was conducted in which all exons and exon-intron boundaries of SOX8 gene were screened in 190 NOA and 139 oligozoospermia cases by Sanger sequencing. The detected variants were examined in 284 normospermic controls. Nine known single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of SOX8 gene were identified, and four of them exist simultaneously in oligo/azoospermia patients. A comparison of allele/genotype frequencies of these variants showed no significant difference between oligo/azoospermia cases and controls. The results indicate that deleterious variants in SOX8 gene may not be a common cause for oligo/azoospermia in Chinese men. Considering ethnic diversity, SOX8 could not be ruled out as a candidate gene for male infertility. The role of SOX8-mediated Sertoli cell function and BTB integrity played in the pathogenesis of male infertility needs to be further explored in other populations. © 2020 Blackwell Verlag GmbH.We examined the associations between the need for personal control, different types of ingroup commitment, and group-related outcomes (1) defensive responses to ingroup criticism, (2) ingroup disloyalty, and (3) outgroup attitudes. We assumed that collective narcissism (i.e., a belief in ingroup's greatness which is contingent on external validation and stems from frustrated individual needs) should be concerned with defending the ingroup image and derogating outgroups, but not necessarily with being loyal to the ingroup. Secure ingroup identification (i.e., a confidently held ingroup evaluation, which stems from satisfied needs), in contrast, should predict greater ingroup loyalty and positive outgroup attitudes. We expected these effects to be especially strong once we account for the overlap between collective narcissism and group-level self-investment - a key component of ingroup identification. In a nationally representative sample of Polish adults (n = 1,007), collective narcissism (net of group-level self-investment) mediated between low personal control and ingroup image defense, lower group loyalty, and less positive outgroup attitudes. Secure ingroup identification (group-level self-investment net of collective narcissism) mediated between high personal control and ingroup loyalty and positive outgroup attitudes. It was not associated with ingroup image defense. Implications for understanding the role of identification in inter- and intra-group relations are discussed. © 2020 The British Psychological Society.Hypertension is a common disease worldwide. Alcohol consumption is one of the risk factors for hypertension, however, it is unclear how alcohol consumption elevates blood pressure. Blood pressure could be affected by interactions between genetic variations and alcohol consumption. Thus, we performed a genome-wide interaction study (GWIS) to assess the effect of gene-alcohol consumption interaction on blood pressure among adults aged ≥40 years from the Ansan and Ansung cohort study (n = 6,176), a part of the Korean Genome Epidemiology Study (KoGES). As a result, rs1297184, single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in locus LGR5 was significant (PGWIS  = 8.78 × 10-9 ) in GWIS analysis on diastolic blood pressure, but not on systolic blood pressure. However, there was a heteroscedasticity of alcohol consumption. In the GWIS analysis, applying the inverse-variance weighting to correct the systematic inflation slightly attenuated the strength of interaction (PGWIS_IVW  = 7.14 × 10-8 ). This interaction was replicated in the Health Examinees cohort (p = .026), a large-scale community-based cohort (n = 18,708). In conclusion, we identified a possible novel interaction between an SNP (rs1297184) and alcohol consumption on blood pressure. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) of the eyelid is a difficult clinical diagnosis due to its rarity and ability to masquerade as other conditions including blepharoconjunctivitis, allergic contact dermatitis, psoriasis or lichen planus.1 The delay in diagnosis can cause permanent eyelid damage. Less well known is its ability to masquerade histologically as other squamoproliferative conditions, particularly squamous cell carcinoma2,3 . © 2020 British Association of Dermatologists.Mass spectrometry has been the "gold standard" for drugs of abuse (DoA) analysis for many decades because of the selectivity and sensitivity it affords. Recent progress in all aspects of mass spectrometry has seen significant developments in the field of DoA analysis. Mass spectrometry is particularly well suited to address the rapidly proliferating number of very high potency, novel psychoactive substances that are causing an alarming number of fatalities worldwide. This review surveys advancements in the areas of sample preparation, gas and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, as well as the rapidly emerging field of ambient ionization mass spectrometry. We have predominantly targeted literature progress over the past ten years and present our outlook for the future. © 2020 Periodicals, Inc. Mass Spec Rev.OBJECTIVES This study aimed to explore whether population characteristics were associated with the use of dental services, individual's personal oral health practices, dental caries and oral health-related impacts using the revised Andersen's behavioural model as the theoretical framework. METHODS This cross-sectional study included participants from a Norwegian general population (N = 1840; 20-79 years) included in the Tromstannen-Oral Health in Northern Norway (TOHNN) study. The variables included in the model were social structure (income, education, urbanization), sense of coherence (SOC), enabling resources (difficulties accessing the dentist, declined treatment, dental anxiety), treatment need, use of dental services, toothbrushing frequency, sugary soda drink consumption, decayed teeth and oral health-related impacts (OHIP-14). Structural equation modelling was used to test the direct and indirect effects within Andersen's behavioural model of access and health outcomes. RESULTS Andersen's behavioural model fit the data well and explained a large part of the variance in use of dental services (58%), oral health-related impacts (48%) and, to a lesser extent, decayed teeth (12%).
