BACKGROUND Mosquito-borne viruses, such as Zika, dengue, yellow fever, and chikungunya, are important causes of human diseases nearly worldwide. The greatest health risk for arboviral disease outbreaks is the presence of the most competent and highly invasive domestic mosquito, Aedes aegypti. In Cabo Verde, two recent arbovirus outbreaks were reported, a dengue outbreak in 2009, followed by a Zika outbreak in 2015. This study is the first entomological survey for Ae. aegypti that includes all islands of Cabo Verde archipelago, in which we aim to evaluate the actual risk of vector-borne arboviruses as a continuous update of the geographical distribution of this species. METHODS In order to assess its current distribution and abundance, we undertook a mosquito larval survey in the nine inhabited islands of Cabo Verde from November 2018 to May 2019. Entomological larval survey indices were calculated, and the abundance analyzed. We collected and identified 4045 Ae. aegypti mosquitoes from 264 positive breeding sites in 22 municipalities and confirmed the presence of Ae. aegypti in every inhabited island. Results Water drums were found to be the most prevalent containers (n = 3843; 62.9%), but puddles (n = 27; 0.4%) were the most productive habitats found. The overall average of the House, Container, and Breteau larval indices were 8.4%, 4.4%, and 10.9, respectively. However, 15 out of the 22 municipalities showed that the Breteau Index was above the epidemic risk threshold. CONCLUSION These results suggest that if no vector control measures are considered to be in place, the risk of new arboviral outbreaks in Cabo Verde is high. The vector control strategy adopted must include measures of public health directed to domestic water storage and management.Centella asiatica (C. asiatica) is one of the medicinal plants that has been reported to exert comprehensive neuroprotection in vitro and in vivo. In view of this, the present study was performed to investigate the effect of ethanolic extract of C. asiatica, designated as raw-extract of C. asiatica (RECA) in reducing the acetylcholinesterase (AChE), inflammations, and oxidative stress activities via both in vitro (SH-SY5Y and RAW 264.7 cells) and in vivo (Sprague Dawley rats). Quantitative high-performance liquid chromatography analysis reveals that RECA contains a significantly high proportion of glycosides than the aglycones with madecassoside as the highest component, followed by asiaticoside. Treatment of SH-SY5Y cells with RECA significantly reduced the AChE activity in a concentration-dependent manner with an IC50 value of 31.09 ± 10.07 µg/mL. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of RECA were evaluated by lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Our results elucidated that treatment with RECA significantly suppressed the level of pro-inflammatory cytokine/mediators and oxidative stress released in a concentration-dependent manner. Interestingly, these patterns of inhibition were consistent as observed in the LPS-induced neuroinflammation Sprague Dawley rats' model. The highest concentration used in the two models presented the most significant results. Herein, our findings strongly suggest that RECA may offer therapeutic potential for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease through inhibiting the AChE, inflammation, and oxidative stress activities. As a novel and safe sanitizer, polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride (PHMG) has been used to inhibit the spoilage of agricultural products caused by fungi. However, little is known about its antibacterial effects on vegetables. In this study, we evaluated the disinfection efficacy of PHMG on ready-to-eat lettuce. PHMG (150-200 mg/L) treatment for 5 min was optimal for lettuce disinfection. Compared to several household sanitizers (vinegar 1% acetic acid; kettle descaler 1% citric acid; "84" disinfectant 200 mg/L sodium hypochlorite), PHMG showed the greatest reductions in Escherichia coli O157H7, Listeria monocytogenes, aerobic mesophilic counts, aerobic psychrotrophic counts and molds and yeasts. Quality analysis of color (as determined by L*, a* and b*) and determination of electrolyte leakage indicated that PHMG did not cause any additional quality loss as compared to other household sanitizers. These results provide a reference for the application of PHMG as a vegetable sanitizer at the ready-to-eat stage.Urban traffic pattern reflects how people move and how goods are transported, which is crucial for traffic management and urban planning. With the development of sensing techniques, accumulated sensor data are captured for monitoring vehicles, which also present the opportunities of big transportation data, especially for real-time interactive traffic pattern analysis. We propose a three-layer framework for the recognition and visualization of multiscale traffic patterns. The first layer computes the middle-tier synopses at fine spatial and temporal scales, which are indexed and stored in a geodatabase. The second layer uses synopses to efficiently extract multiscale traffic patterns. The third layer supports real-time interactive visual analytics for intuitive explorations by end users. An experiment in Shenzhen on taxi GPS trajectories that were collected over one month was conducted. Multiple traffic patterns are recognized and visualized in real-time. The results show the satisfactory performance of proposed framework in traffic analysis, which will facilitate traffic management and operation.Cloud computing supports many unprecedented cloud-based vehicular applications. To improve connectivity and bandwidth through programmable networking architectures, Software-Defined (SD) Vehicular Network (SDVN) is introduced. SDVN architecture enables vehicles to be equipped with SDN OpenFlow switch on which the routing rules are updated from a SDN OpenFlow controller. Selleck Ala-Gln From SDVN, new vehicular architectures are introduced, for instance SD Vehicular Cloud (SDVC). In SDVC, vehicles are SDN devices that host virtualization technology for enabling deployment of cloud-based vehicular applications. In addition, the migration of Virtual Machines (VM) over SDVC challenges the performance of cloud-based vehicular applications due the highly mobility of vehicles. However, the current literature that discusses VM migration in SDVC is very limited. In this paper, we first analyze the evolution of computation and networking technologies of SDVC with a focus on its architecture within the cloud-based vehicular environment.
