Cochlear implant (CI) listeners typically perform poorly on tasks involving the pitch of complex tones. This limitation in performance is thought to be mainly due to the restricted number of active channels and the broad current spread that leads to channel interactions and subsequent loss of precise spectral information, with temporal information limited primarily to temporal-envelope cues. Little is known about the degree of spectral resolution required to perceive combinations of multiple pitches, or a single pitch in the presence of other interfering tones in the same spectral region. This study used noise-excited envelope vocoders that simulate the limited resolution of CIs to explore the perception of multiple pitches presented simultaneously. The results show that the resolution required for perceiving multiple complex pitches is comparable to that found in a previous study using single complex tones. Although relatively high performance can be achieved with 48 channels, performance remained near chance when even limited spectral spread (with filter slopes as steep as 144 dB/octave) was introduced to the simulations. To explore the mechanism of action of biofilms in the biocontrol process, we manipulated various exogenous factors to explore the morphology of the JK-SH007 biofilm in vitro. The addition of glycerol and MgSO4 to TSB medium stimulated biofilm production, increased the resistance of JK-SH007 to disease, enhanced the survival of JK-SH007 in nutrient-poor environments and maintained the antagonistic ability of JK-SH007 against the poplar canker pathogen. Therefore, we constructed and optimized a biofilm-forming system to produce a large number of stable JK-SH007 biofilms. The optimized system showed that the optimal incubation time for JK-SH007 biofilm formation was 14 h, the optimal temperature of the static culture was 25 °C, and the optimal pH was 5. The optimal medium for biofilm formation was TSB medium, 1% glycerol and 50 mM MgSO4. RT-qPCR experiments showed that an increase in the expression of the suhB gene promoted JK-SH007 biofilm formation, while an increase in the expression level of the ropN gene inhibited JK-SH007 biofilm formation. The possible mechanism by which JK-SH007 was inhibited by biofilm formation under natural culture was revealed. These results indicate the importance of adding nutrients to JK-SH007 biocides produced on a commercial scale. This is the first report of JK-SH007 producing a long-lasting biofilm that guarantees antagonism.BACKGROUND The influence of socioeconomic status on patient outcomes is unclear. We assessed the impact of socioeconomic deprivation on severity of illness at intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and on the risk of death at 3 months after ICU admission. METHODS The IVOIRE study was a prospective, observational, multicentre cohort study in the ICU of 8 participating hospitals in France, including patients aged ≥ 18 years admitted to the ICU and receiving at least one life support therapy for organ failure. The primary outcomes were severity at admission (assessed by SAPSII score), and mortality at 3 months. Socioeconomic data were obtained from interviews with patients or family. Deprivation was assessed using the EPICES score. RESULTS Among 1294 patents included between 2013 and 2016, 629 (48.6%) were classed as deprived and differed significantly from non-deprived subjects in terms of sociodemographic characteristics and pre-existing conditions. The mean SAPS II score at admission was 50.1 ± 19.4 in deprived patients and 52.3 ± 17.3 in non-deprived patients, with no significant difference by multivariable analysis (β = - 1.85 [95% CI - 3.86; + 0.16, p = 0.072]). The proportion of death was 31.1% at 3 months, without significant differences between deprived and non-deprived patients, even after adjustment for confounders. CONCLUSIONS Deprivation is frequent in patients admitted to the ICU and is not associated with disease severity at admission, or with mortality at 3 months between deprived and non-deprived patients. The original article has been corrected.Osteosarcoma (OS), a malignant bone tumor, mainly occurs in adolescents. Cluster of differentiation 133 (CD133) is one of the most common tumor stem cell biomarkers. The prognostic significance of CD133 in OS has been reported, while the conclusions of these study were inconsistent. This study was conducted to investigate the association between CD133 expression and OS. We performed a search using several database including NCBI PubMed, Springer, CNKI, Web of Science and Wanfang for relevant papers about the prognostic value of CD133 on OS published before October 19, 2019. Pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95% CI were used to evaluate the outcomes. Seven reports including 498 OS patients were used for evaluating the association between CD133 positive expression and OS clinicopathological features. CD133 positive expression was not related to the age, gender, tumor size, tumor location and pathological type of OS. The expression of CD133 was significantly associated with high ennecking stage of OS (OR 9.67, 95% CI 5.56-16.80, P  less then  0.05) and OS local recurrence (OR 3.02, 95% CI 1.84-4.94, P  less then  0.05). In addition, the expressions of CD133 predict metastasis (OR 7.64, 95% CI 4.93-11.85, P  less then  0.05). Moreover, this study indicated that CD133 expression was correlated to lower 5-year overall survival in OS with the pooled OR of 5.85 (95% CI 3.30-10.37, P  less then  0.05). Our reported shown that positive expression of CD133 is significantly correlated with ennecking stage, local recurrence, metastasis and low 5-year overall survival rate of OS patients.
