The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak started in Italy on February 20, 2020, and has resulted in many deaths and intensive care unit (ICU) admissions. This study aimed to illustrate the epidemic COVID-19 growth pattern in Italy by considering the regional differences in disease diffusion during the first 3 mo of the epidemic.
Official COVID-19 data were obtained from the Italian Civil Protection Department of the Council of Ministers Presidency. The mortality and ICU admission rates per 100,000 inhabitants were calculated at the regional level and summarized by means of a Bayesian multilevel meta-analysis. Data were retrieved until April 21, 2020.
The highest cumulative mortality rates per 100 000 inhabitants were observed in northern Italy, particularly in Lombardia (85.3; 95% credibility intervals [CI], 75.7-94.7). The difference in the mortality rates between northern and southern Italy increased over time, reaching a difference of 67.72 (95% CI, 66-67) cases on April 2, 2020.
Northern Italy showed higher and increasing mortality rates during the first 3 mo of the epidemic. The uncontrolled virus circulation preceding the infection spreading in southern Italy had a considerable impact on system burnout. This experience demonstrates that preparedness against the pandemic is of crucial importance to contain its disruptive effects.

This experience demonstrates that preparedness against the pandemic is of crucial importance to contain its disruptive effects.The aim of this study was to estimate the seroprevalence and risk factors associated with Toxoplasma gondii exposure in dogs and cats from Bangkok, Thailand. Blood samples from 318 dogs and 321 cats were tested for T. gondii antibodies by modified agglutination test (cut-off 125). Additionally, 18 dogs and 20 cats were longitudinally sampled for T. gondii antibodies during the same study period, between June and July 2019. The overall seroprevalence in dogs and cats was 7.9% (25/318; 95% CI 4.9–10.8%) and 18.7% (95% CI 14.4–23.0%), respectively. For dogs, risk factors identified were being a mixed-breed animal and living totally outdoors, while increasing age was shown to be a risk factor for cats. Seroconversion was not detected and titres from positive animals remained constant over longitudinal study. The present study indicates that there is a prominent presence of T. gondii in urban and peri-urban areas of Bangkok, suggesting that outdoor dogs and cats should be considered as a possible risk factor for humans.In this systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis, we aimed to assess whether coffee and tea consumption is related to the risk of glioma. We performed a systematic literature search using PubMed, Embase, Scopus and the EuropePMC from the inception of database up until 1 October 2020. Exposures in the present study were coffee and tea consumption, the main outcome was the incidence of glioma. The present study compares the association between the exposure of coffee and tea with the incidence of glioma, and the results are reported in relative risks (RR). There are 12 unique studies comprising of 1 960 731 participants with 2987 glioma cases. Higher coffee consumption was associated with a statistically non-significant trend towards lower risk of glioma (RR 0·77 (95 % CI 0·55, 1·03), P= 0·11; I275·27 %). Meta-regression showed that the association between coffee and glioma was reduced by smoking (P= 0·029). Higher tea consumption was associated with a lower risk of glioma (RR 0·84 (95 % CI 0·71, 0·98), P= 0·030; I216·42 %). Sensitivity analysis by removal of case-control studies showed that higher coffee consumption (RR 0·85 (95 % CI 0·72, 1·00), P= 0·046; I20 %) and higher tea consumption (RR 0·81 (95 % CI 0·70, 0·93), P= 0·004; I20 %, Pnon-linearity = 0·140) were associated with lower risk of glioma. Dose-response meta-analysis showed that every one cup of coffee per day decreases the risk of glioma by 3 % (RR 0·97 (95 % CI 0·94, 0·99), P= 0·016, Pnon-linearity = 0·054) and every one cup of tea per day decreases the risk of glioma by 3 % (RR 0·97 (95 % CI 0·94, 1·00), P= 0·048). This meta-analysis showed apparent association between coffee and tea intake and risk of glioma.Although variable-oriented analyses are dominant in developmental psychopathology, researchers have championed a person-oriented approach that focuses on the individual as a totality. This view has methodological implications and various person-oriented methods have been developed to test person-oriented hypotheses. Configural frequency analysis (CFA) has been identified as a prime method for a person-oriented analysis of categorical data. CFA searches for configurations in cross-classifications and asks whether the number of observed cases is larger (CFA type) or smaller (CFA antitype) than expected under a probability model. The present study introduces a combination of CFA and model-based recursive partitioning (MOB) to test for type/antitype heterogeneity in the population. MOB CFA is well suited to detect complex moderation processes and can distinguish between subpopulation and population types/antitypes. Model specifications are discussed for first-order CFA and prediction CFA. A specific data mining tool, based on Fourier transforms, was also developed to characterize lattice distortions in the reconstructed volumes. This tool has been used in simulated and experimental volumes to successfully locate and characterize defects such as dislocations and grain boundaries.
