Bacterial division results in two daughter cells, whose shapes are predetermined by the mother. This makes it difficult to explore the origin of cell shapes in healthy bacteria. In this review, we argue that the Gram-negative bacterium Myxococcus xanthus is an ideal model for understanding PG assembly and bacterial morphogenesis, because it forms rods and spheres at different life stages. Rod-shaped vegetative cells of M. xanthus can thoroughly degrade their PG and form spherical spores. As these spores germinate, cells rebuild their PG and reestablish rod shape without preexisting templates. Such a unique sphere-to-rod transition provides a rare opportunity to visualize de novo PG assembly and rod-like morphogenesis in a well-established model organism.Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 supplementation reduces morbidities in very low birth weight infants ( less then 1500 g), while the effect on extremely low birth weight infants (ELBW, less then 1000 g) is still questioned. In a randomised placebo-controlled trial (ClinicalTrials.gov ID NCT01603368), head growth, but not feeding tolerance or morbidities, improved in L. reuteri-supplemented preterm ELBW infants. Here, we investigate colonisation with the probiotic strain in preterm ELBW infants who received L. reuteri DSM 17938 or a placebo from birth to postmenstrual week (PMW) 36. Quantitative PCR was used on 582 faecal DNA samples collected from 132 ELBW infants at one, two, three, and four weeks, at PMW 36, and at two years of age. Human milk oligosaccharides were measured in 31 milk samples at two weeks postpartum. At least 86% of the ELBW infants in the L. reuteri group were colonised with the probiotic strain during the neonatal period, despite low gestational age, high antibiotic pressure, and independent of infant feeding mode. Higher concentrations of lacto-N-tetraose, sialyl-lacto-N-neotetraose c, and 6'-sialyllactose in mother's milk weakly correlated with lower L. reuteri abundance. Within the L. reuteri group, higher L. reuteri abundance weakly correlated with a shorter time to reach full enteral feeding. Female sex and L. reuteri colonisation improved head growth from birth to four weeks of age. In conclusion, L. reuteri DSM 17938 supplementation leads to successful colonisation in ELBW infants.

mice. Here, we tested if CoPEC trigger tumorigenesis in a mouse model lacking genetic susceptibility or the use of carcinogen.

Mice with autophagy deficiency in IECs (

) or wild-type mice (
) were infected with the CoPEC 11G5 strain or the mutant 11G5∆clbQ incapable of producing colibactin and subjected to 12 cycles of DSS treatment to induce chronic colitis. Mouse colons were used for histological assessment, immunohistochemical and immunoblot analyses for DNA damage marker.
11G5 or 11G5∆clbQ infection increased clinical and histological inflammation scores, and these were further enhanced by IEC-specific autophagy deficiency. 11G5 infection, but not 11G5∆clbQ infection, triggered the formation of invasive carcinthe formation of invasive carcinomas, and this was further increased by autophagy deficiency. The increase in invasive carcinomas was correlated with enhanced DNA damage and independent of inflammation. Conclusions CoPEC induce colorectal carcinogenesis in a CRC mouse model lacking genetic susceptibility and carcinogen. This work highlights the role of (i) CoPEC as a driver of CRC development, and (ii) autophagy in inhibiting the carcinogenic properties of CoPEC.Bursera morelensis is used in Mexican folk medicine to treat wounds on the skin. Recently, it was shown that the essential oil (EO) of B. morelensis has wound healing activity, accelerating cutaneous wound closure and generating scars with good tensile strength. α-pinene (PIN) and α-phellandrene (FEL) are terpenes that have been found in this EO, and it has been shown in different studies that both have anti-inflammatory activity. The aim of this study was to determine the wound healing activity of these two terpenes. The results of in vitro tests demonstrate that PIN and FEL are not cytotoxic at low concentrations and that they do not stimulate fibroblast cell proliferation. In vivo tests showed that the terpenes produce stress-resistant scars and accelerate wound contraction, due to collagen deposition from the early stages, in wounds treated with both terpenes. Therefore, we conclude that both α-pinene and α-phellandrene promote the healing process; this confirms the healing activity of the EO of B. morelensis, since having these terpenes as part of its chemical composition explains part of its demonstrated activity.
