Bi-Fold Door Repair
Bi-fold doors can be used for both external and internal use. They are affluent and can be adapted to meet any need. But, like all other fixtures and fittings, they are prone to be subject to wear and tear.
Thankfully, it's not hard to restore them to good condition. With a little patience and some basic woodworking knowledge, you can tackle a few easy bi-fold door repair projects.
Cracked Corners
Bifold closet doors are generally lightweight, and they are susceptible to cracking at the top and bottom pivot points. This is usually the result of time due to the natural deterioration of wood in your home. It can be easily repaired by clamping and gluing affected wood. It's a simple process and will save you the cost of hiring a professional do the job for you.
Bifold doors are usually not able to close or open easily. This is most likely caused by a misalignment of the pivot pins or guides of the bifold doors. This could be caused by a slipping door or pins and guides that are loose. It's an easy fix.
You should first check the tracks and runners for obstructions or obstructions. Leaves, dirt, and sand can cause issues for a bifolding door. Cleaning and lubricating your tracks regularly will ensure they are in good working order.
Next, if you find that a door leans when closed, the door is likely to require trimming. It is recommended to use a circular saw since doors are not very thick. You should also be careful to avoid chipping or cracking the door's veneer when cutting it. To do this, set the door on a solid work bench and draw a line with a pencil. Then trim the door along the line with circular saw.
Another issue that can arise with a bifold door is that the doors be able to rub against carpeting when opened or shut. This can lead to seals becoming less durable, allowing draughts into your home, and decreasing the efficiency of your home's energy. However, this is a fairly simple problem to solve. All you have to do is clean the seals using a non-abrasive solvent such as vinegar or mild dish detergent and then apply a silicone sealant to the damaged area. The problem should be resolved after the sealant has dried. This will also prolong the longevity of the seals and doors.
Misaligned Doors
If your bifold doors are squeezing or jamming when you attempt to open them or closed, it is an indication that they are not in alignment. It can also be a serious security risk for your home. It is important to address this issue when you first are aware of it. Refusal to fix it can cause more costly and extensive repair work.
Fortunately that adjusting your bifold door is simple. Ensure that the track is free of obstructions and clean. You may need to use a brush or cloth to remove any debris or dirt that has built up over time. When the track is clean then you can lubricate the track using a silicone spray or any other fluid to smooth the movement of doors.
You will then need to adjust the pivot brackets in order to put your doors in the proper position. They are situated on the top and bottom of the frame of your door, and are joined by screws. If your door is dragging on the floor, you can raise it by loosening the screws, then tightening them later. If it is pulling away from the wall, you can lower it by loosening the screws and tightening them later. Continue to make small adjustments until the doors are perfectly aligned.
It's also essential to make sure that the door frames are secured. If the frame moves slightly it can cause gaps between the doors which allow water and air to seep into your home. It can cause hinges to become unbalanced and doors to be uneven. In this situation you'll have to fix the frame.
Also, make sure that the doors are on the same level as the floor. If they aren't, you will need to adjust the hinge bolts to bring them into a correct position. This can be accomplished by closing and opening the doors, using a spirit level to determine the alignment of each panel and then using a screwdriver to make small adjustments until all of the panels are level with the floor.
Shag Carpeting
Bi-fold doors are designed to slide open and closed however, sometimes the doors may scrape the wall or floor. This is often caused by one or more pivot pins that are misaligned.
This problem is usually easy to fix. On the bottom of your bi-fold door there is pivot pins that are encased on a floor bracket, and an attached spring at the top of the door that engages a sliding bracket that locks into the track. If your bifold door scratches on the carpet you can raise it by rotating the pivot pin at the bottom counterclockwise.
Another reason you might be experiencing a shagging issue in your bi-fold doors is that the track that they slide on is not level. This could be due weather changes and settling, or even moving. If this is the case, you can try to adjust your tracks by loosening the screws holding the upper track bracket and then sliding it up or down until it is in line with the bottom track bracket.
Another possibility for the bi-fold door is that the wood has cracked around one or more pivot pins. This is a problem that many doors suffer from as well as bifolds. You will need C-clamps and a small amount carpenter's adhesive to solve this. First, remove the door and pry the pivot pin out with a screwdriver or pliers. Spread the glue using a toothpick on the crack, secure the door and allow it to dry for 3 to 4 hours.
You should always have your bi-fold doors repaired by an expert, regardless of how minor or serious the issue. This will prevent further damage and ensure that the door is functioning correctly. You can find an expert in your area by visiting the website of the company that you are dealing with. They will have a list of installers who have attended their workshops to obtain their certification. Then contact them to schedule your bi-fold repair appointment.
Broken Slats
Louvered doors for closets allow air to circulate, discourage mildew and allow your clothes to see. They can be a wonderful feature for a home, but the task of repairing or replacing them can be difficult.
Louver doors are made up of slats which open and close in order to let air, light, or rain into the room. They're often made of polyurethane or wood and can be found in doors, windows or walls. Certain bifold doors don't have louvered slats but those that do have louvered slats may be misaligned over time or break.
It is possible to believe that you should replace the door after a slat is broken. But, it's not required. Instead, you can repair the damaged slat with a piece of fabric and carpenters glue.
Begin by removing the door from the track. Place it on the ground, or on a set of saw horses in a way that the slats face upwards. You'll want to work on the door while having it positioned in this way to avoid damaging or bending the tracks or hinges.
To take a broken slat from a door you need to place a claw-type hammer underneath each slat. Then, jerk the slat in order to separate it. After the slat is removed, measure the area where it was taken out to determine the length and width of the replacement slat. Once bifold door repairs have the measurements you can cut a piece of foam board or cork to the same dimensions as the area where the broken slat has been removed.
Apply a thick line of carpenters glue to one side of the foam/foam board. Place the fabric on the board's back smoothing out any wrinkles and creases along the way. Place the slat carefully into the slot in the door and attach it using nails, if needed. When the glue has dried, you'll be able to hang your bifold closet door.
