This study aimed to investigate the mechanisms by which the expression of connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), a downstream mediator of TGF-β, is controlled by miRNAs post-transcriptionally after exposure to ionizing radiation. The expression of CTGF in NIH-3T3 cells and mouse embryonic fibroblasts was increased by ionizing radiation. However, this increase was suppressed with a specific inhibitor of TGF-β receptor. Among the predictable miRNAs that target the CTGF gene, the expression of miR-26a was downregulated after exposure to ionizing radiation and this regulation was negatively mediated by TGF-β signaling. miR-26a negatively regulated the CTGF expression at the post-transcriptional level; however, ionizing radiation suppressed this negative regulation. In addition, the overexpression of miR-26a inhibited the expression of CTGF and type I collagen after irradiation. In conclusion, miR-26a modulates the expression of CTGF via TGF-β signaling in irradiated fibroblasts. The results suggest the potential application of miR-26a in the treatment of RIF.Hip fractures are common in the elderly, and many patients with hip fractures have low vitamin D levels. Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in hip fracture patients and associated with increased mortality and complications. However, there is limited long-term data on how vitamin D levels affect functional outcomes after hip fracture surgery. The aim of this study is to ascertain the association between vitamin D levels and recovery from hip surgery.

Patients who underwent hip fracture surgery from January 2012 to December 2016 and had vitamin D levels assessed during admission were included. Retrospective analysis was performed on patients' demographic data such as age, gender and clinical parameters such as preoperative vitamin D, haemoglobin levels, Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), and type and site of surgery. Patients were divided according to four different vitaminity of life after hip fracture surgery.
The central sulcus is an important landmark in the brain. This study aimed to investigate the distinctive signal of the paracentral lobule (PL) on T1-weighted images (T1WIs; the white PL sign) and evaluate its usefulness as a new method of identifying the central sulcus.

T1WIs of the brain of 96 participants (age, 58.9 ± 17.9years; range, 8-87years) scanned at 3-T MR system were retrospectively reviewed. First, we qualitatively analyzed the signal of the cortex of the PL by comparing it with that of the ipsilateral superior frontal gyrus on a 4-point grading score. Second, we compared the cortical signal intensity and gray/white-matter contrast between the PL and superior frontal gyrus. Third, we evaluated the usefulness of the PL signal for identifying the central sulcus.

The PL cortex was either mildly hyperintense (grade 2) or definitely hyperintense (grade 3) in comparison with that of superior frontal cortex in all participants. The signal intensity of the PL cortex was significantly higher than that of the superior frontal cortex (p < 0.001), whereas the gray/white-matter contrast of the PL was weaker than that of the superior frontal gyrus (p < 0.001). The central sulci were identified with 94.3% accuracy (181/192) using the new method.

We present a rare, intradural manifestation of CPPD requiring surgical intervention, with a review of pertinent differential diagnoses on imaging. A 48-year-old male presented with urinary retention, and was found to have an intradural lesion with peripheral enhancement on gadolinium T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. Due to the patient's progressive neurological deterioration, he was taken for a minimally invasive approach for resection of the lesion. Histopathological analysis revealed crystal deposits with rhomboidal birefringence consistent with CPPD. The imaging features of this lesion were atypical for any of the traditional intradural extramedullary lesions. Typically seen extradurally, recognizing CPPD as a potential culprit for intradural compression is helpful to recognize for providers.Quorum sensing (QS) is a sophisticated bacterial communication system which plays a key role in the virulence and biofilm formation of many pathogens. Fused filament fabrication 3D printing with polylactic acid filaments is the most widely used method to generate biomodels at hospitals throughout the world. The main limitation of this manufacturing system is related to the biomodels' temperature sensitivity, which all but prevents them to be sterilized using conventional methods. The purpose of this study is to define an autoclave temperature-resistant FFF-PLA 3D printing protocol to print 3D fractures biomodels during preoperative planning.

Six different printing protocols were established, each with a different infill percentage. Ten distal radius biomodels were printed with each protocol and each biomodel was subject to 3D scanning. The biomodels were subsequently autoclave-sterilized at 134°C and subjected to a new scanning process, which was followed by a calculation of changes in area, volume and deformity using the Hausdorff-Besicovitch method. Finally, 192 polylactic acid models were produced using the printing protocol offering the greatest rescreases their autonomy, allowing them to easily produce 3D biomodels that can be used for the treatment of fractures.
Asparaginase (ASNase) is a key component in the treatment protocols of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Asparagine synthetase (ASNS) and the basic region leucine zipper activating transcription factor 5 (ATF5) mediate the anti-leukemic effect of ASNase. Only a few reports studied the association between polymorphisms in these genes and treatment-related toxicity and response. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate the association of ASNS and ATF5 polymorphisms with the susceptibility to ASNase-related toxicity and disease outcome in a population of childhood ALL Egyptian patients.

In this study, 88 children with ALL were enrolled and genotyped for ASNS T629A and ATF5 C362T polymorphisms using allelic discrimination assay.

The studied polymorphisms did not associate with hypersensitivity or thrombosis, while the ATF5 C362T polymorphism was associated significantly with decreased ASNase-associated pancreatitis (AAP) risk under the dominant model. Patients carrying TT/CT genotypes of ATF5 C362T polymorphism had a significantly better overall survival (OS) and longer event-free survival (EFS) compared to patients with CC genotype. Multivariate analysis confirmed the independent prognostic value of the ATF5 C362T dominant model.

To evaluate the perioperative and oncological outcomes after post-chemotherapy robot-assisted retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (PC-RARPLND).

We retrospectively reported the perioperative and oncological outcomes of all the patients with testicular cancer who underwent PC-RARPLND at three tertiary teaching centers. Descriptive statistical measures were used to report demographic, clinical, intraoperative, postoperative and oncological outcomes.

There were 43 consecutive patients who underwent PC-RARPLND at the participating institutions. Mean patient age was 29.2years (± 8.2), BMI was 26.6kg/m
(± 6.2). The mean size of retroperitoneal mass was 4.1cm (± 3.5). Full bilateral template dissection was performed in 38 (88.3%) patients. Nerve sparing was attempted in 19 (44.1%) patients. Mean operative time was 374min (± 132) and estimated blood loss was 292ml (± 445.6). The mean postoperative LOS was 2.8days (± 5.9). There was a total of 12 complications in 10 patients (Clavien grade I = 5, II = 3, III = 3 and IV = 1). Postoperative pathology demonstrated 24 patients (55%) with necrosis/fibrosis, 16 (37%) with teratoma and 3 (7%) with viable tumor.
