How ADHD Is Diagnosed
Your doctor will ask questions regarding your current symptoms and history with ADHD. He will also review your family history.
People are often diagnosed with ADHD in later life. A major event, such as pregnancy or a crisis in a relationship, triggers awareness of the issue. The first step in addressing ADHD symptoms and improving functioning is to receive an assessment.
Characteristics
Children who meet the diagnostic criteria for ADHD have significant difficulty sitting still, waiting to be called and focusing at school or other settings. These problems can significantly impact their performance at work, at home or at school. The signs of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity have to be present for at least six months and be more prominent than is normal for their age or developmental level. They should also be causing significant problems at school, work, home and in relationships.
The diagnosis of ADHD requires a thorough clinical evaluation by a certified health professional. This could include a thorough physical exam and a look for other conditions that can cause similar symptoms like depression or thyroid disease. The doctor will also look at the family history of the patient and review medical, psychiatric, and academic records. He will also ask the patient about their symptoms. Children are asked questions based on their age and parents are also able to be interviewed.
The provider will use American Psychiatric Association clinical guidelines to diagnose ADHD in adults as well as children. These guidelines are described in DSM-5 which is the fifth edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The doctor will analyze the person's behavior in the past and present and how it affects their professional, social and family life. If possible the therapist will examine the person's school and childhood experiences.
When looking at adults, the physician will be able to determine whether or not they suffer from a co-occurring mental health condition, and will ask whether the person has any family history of ADHD. Family members of those who suffer from ADHD are more likely to suffer from it themselves.
If the health care provider suspects that a patient has ADHD, he or she will give the person a complete clinical evaluation which includes reviewing their current symptoms and requesting that they keep a daily diary of their symptoms for several weeks. The doctor will also inquire about any other conditions the patient has and will refer to the DSM-5 symptoms guide to determine if they have any of the criteria for ADHD.
Diagnosis
Many health professionals who specialize in mental illness or are interested in ADHD can conduct screenings and make a diagnosis of the disorder. Clinical psychologists, nurse practitioner, physician assistants and psychiatrists are all able to diagnose ADHD. Certain family physicians diagnose ADHD in adolescents, children and adults. They may refer adults for a comprehensive assessment.
A thorough medical exam that includes an evaluation of sight and hearing is the first step towards diagnosing ADHD. A doctor may also recommend a brain scanner known as an EEG Based Assessment Aid (NEBA) to measure the intensity of theta and Beta waves in the brain. This type of brain scan is a non-invasive, safe method of screening people for ADHD.
In an interview with the individual, the examiner reviews the individual's medical and psychiatric background dating back to childhood, in addition to his present symptoms and strategies for coping. The doctor checks to see if the person meets the diagnostic criteria for either inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive or combined ADHD presentations as defined by the American Psychiatric Association in its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5).
The doctor may ask teachers and others who spend a great deal of time with children to fill out checklists or questionnaires. They may also ask parents to fill out the forms. Adults will often speak to their spouses, co-workers and other close acquaintances. They may also want to interview someone who has been with the person since childhood.
During the diagnostic process, the mental health professional looks for signs that indicate whether the person is experiencing predominantly inattentive or primarily hyperactive-impulsive symptoms. They will also determine for how long the symptoms have been present for, and if they are causing problems at school, home and at work, or in other aspects of life.
The mental health professional should also look for other disorders that share symptoms with ADHD such as depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder. He or she must also search for physical causes, such as thyroid problems or sleep disorders. A thorough screening will also take a look at the person's social, emotional and family background.
Treatment
Children with ADHD need to learn how to manage their symptoms. Family members can help with this by encouraging school staff to observe the child with a keen eye, giving positive feedback and being flexible and patient. They can also help teach the child relaxation techniques and techniques for calming like yoga or meditation. Regular physical activity and a nutritious diet can boost the ability of children with ADHD to concentrate and focus. Drinks and foods high in sugar can aggravate symptoms. They should also sleep enough.
ADHD symptoms can persist throughout the adolescent years, and into adulthood. In adults, they may manifest in the form of trouble at work or in relationships. A healthcare professional will conduct an assessment to determine if someone has ADHD and the extent of it. The evaluation typically includes an assessment of mental health along with a physical exam, and interviews with the person as well as his or her parents, a spouse or a life partner, and others who know the person well. The doctor may ask the patient to write down their symptoms and how they impact them. They can also use rating scales or other tests to determine that the person is in compliance with the standard criteria for ADHD. They can also inquire about any medical conditions that can be a cause of ADHD symptoms, like seizures disorder and thyroid disorder.
If a person is diagnosed as having ADHD medications will be prescribed to treat symptoms. Stimulants are among the most commonly prescribed drugs used to treat ADHD in both adults and children. These medications can cause adverse effects. One should only use these drugs under the supervision of a doctor and with a prescription. The patient should inform the doctor about any other medications she is taking, because certain medications can interact with stimulants and cause dangerous side effects. Many people suffering from ADHD have to test a variety of kinds and dosages of medications before settling on one that works for him or her.
The following is a list of preventatives.
In certain cases, reducing exposure to environmental triggers can help to prevent ADHD symptoms. click the next website can include sleep and diet, family structure and medication. A GP can help you in finding ways to control triggers, and can refer you to an dietitian for nutritional advice or for additional assistance.
Children can also be assisted by maintaining their routines, limiting caffeine and sugar and taking regular vitamins and mineral supplements (consult your GP). Try to avoid dietary supplements that do not have a scientific basis or could interfere with certain medications.
Adults who suspect ADHD should see an expert in mental health like a psychologist or psychiatrist, to determine the diagnosis. The doctor will review medical records, conduct a physical examination and take a detailed medical history to rule out any other possible causes for the symptoms. The therapist will speak to the patient, observe the patient's behavior in various environments and apply standardized rating scales. He or she will consider the intensity and duration of the ADHD-related symptoms, as as whether they have a significant impact on a person's daily life.
A therapist may work with a patient and their family to improve parenting skills, teach time management and other methods for managing time. They can also instruct the patient in metacognitive skills, which involves the identification and correction of "thinking distortions" that can cause negative moods or the perception of a lack of options. Psychologists may prescribe certain medications and work with mental health professionals to provide a comprehensive treatment.
Parents can help by providing a secure and loving home, setting clear expectations and rewards, encouraging an appropriate sleep hygiene and avoiding stimulants. Parents should also encourage their child to socialize, and work to establish a healthy relationship with their child's partner.
The staff at the school can provide valuable information about behavior and learning issues in children, but they are not competent to diagnose ADHD or make treatment decisions. The student's parents and health care provider must make these decisions, with the support of the teacher.
