The phytochemical study of leaves of Funtumia elastica led to the isolation of three undescribed ursane derivatives, funtumic acids A, B and C (1-3), as well as one steroidal alkaloid, elasticine (4) and five other known compounds (5-9). Their structures were elucidated on the basis of NMR, MS, IR, UV spectroscopic data as well as by comparison with the literature. The compound 5-hydroxypyridine-3-carboxamide (9) was isolated for the first time from the Apocynaceae family. Compounds 1-4 possessed good in vitro antimalarial activities against CQR Dd2 with IC50 values ranging from 4.68 to 5.36 μg/mL and moderate on CQS 3D7. Only compounds 1 and 2 showed leishmanicidal activities with IC50 values ranging between 10.49 and 13.21 μg/mL. In addition, crude extract exhibited potent antiplasmodial (IC50 0.91 and 3.12 μg/mL) and antileishmanial (IC50 3.32 μg/mL) activities, thus demonstrating their potential synergistic action.The medicinal plant Kadsura coccinea distributing in South China, was widely used for reducing inflammation and relieving pain. Additional targets have been identified and newer chemotherapeutic agents have been introduced but their clinical efficacy is limited due to solubility, bioavailability issues and inability to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB). A wide range of biomaterials ranging from biomolecules, polymers, inorganic metal and metal oxide nanoparticles have been employed to assist the delivery of these therapeutic agents into the brain. Additionally, strategies to deliver cells to restore the dopaminergic neurons also have shown promise due to the integration of biocompatible materials that aid neurogenesis through a combination of topographical, chemical and mechanical cues. Neuroprosthetics is an area that may become significant in treatment of motor deficits associated with Parkinson's disease, and involves development of highly conductive and robust electrode materials with excellent cytocompatibility. This review summarizes the major role played by biomaterials in design of novel strategies and in the improvement of existing therapeutic methods as well as the emerging trends in this domain.
To determine conception rates, contraceptive use patterns, and frequency of counseling regarding pregnancy recommendations in patients undergoing bariatric surgery.

Using a database of bariatric surgery patients at our institution, we identified female patients aged 18 to 45 who underwent surgery from 2013 to 2018. Patient charts were reviewed for demographic information, documentation of counseling regarding pregnancy recommendations, conception during the postoperative period, and pre and postoperative contraception use. We examined rates of contraception use and used standard statistical tests to compare conception rates between groups.

Of the 460 patients that met inclusion criteria and did not have a history of permanent contraception, 54% (95% CI 49-58) had documented postoperative contraception use, most commonly the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device followed by combination oral contraceptive pills. In the 18 months following bariatric surgery, 6% of patients (95% CI 4-8) had a documented pregnancy. Over 50% (95% CI 35-71) of pregnancies occurred in patients without documented postoperative contraception.

For bariatric surgery patients at risk of pregnancy, postoperative contraception use patterns and conception rates are not consistent with the recommendation to refrain from pregnancy for 18 months.

Individualized contraceptive counseling that includes a discussion of fertility and weight loss goals, planned bariatric procedure type, and patient preference should be implemented as part of standard preoperative care for patients at risk of pregnancy undergoing bariatric surgery.

Postpartum tubal ligation provides demonstrated benefits to women, but access to this procedure is threatened by restrictions at Catholic healthcare institutions. We aimed to understand how insured employees assign responsibility for postpartum sterilization denial and how it impacts their view of the quality of care provided.

We conducted a nationally representative, cross-sectional survey of employees at Standard and Poor's (S&P) 500 companies utilizing a dual panel drawn from Amerispeak, a probability-based research panel, and a non-probability panel. Respondents answered questions about a scenario of a woman denied a tubal ligation due to Catholic hospital policy when her employer-sponsored insurance provided no other hospital choices. Of 1113 eligible panel members, 1001 (90%) completed the survey. Weighted analysis accounted for complex survey design.

In response to the tubal ligation denial scenario, 42% of respondents rated hospital quality-of-care as poor or very poor. Sixty percent felt that something should have been done differently, with about half assigning responsibility to the religiously-affiliated hospital for not providing the procedure and half to the insurance company for not including secular hospitals in its network.
