This article highlights newer diagnostic techniques adopted by different countries for assessing color vision to see for the scope of evidence-based guidelines for minimum color vision requirements for flight crew as well as for civil aviation in India.
Persons who inject drugs (PWID) in the groin, legs, and/or feet are at high risk for chronic venous ulcers (CVUs). The plasma C-reactive protein (CRP) level is a marker of systemic inflammation.
This pilot study examined CRP levels in plasma and CVU exudate of PWID. The aims were to (1) compare levels of CRP in plasma and exudate; (2) examine if the CRP level in exudate changed over 4 weeks with wound treatment; and (3) examine the relationship of the exudate CRP level with CVU area, CVU age, number of CVUs, and number of comorbidities.
Persons who inject drugs seeking wound care were enrolled in this Institutional Review Board approved prospective, longitudinal, descriptive study. A blood sample was collected on the first visit (week 1); the plasma was then separated. Wound exudate was collected on swabs during the first visit (week 1) and 4 weeks later (week 4). All samples were stored at -80° C. Samples were eluted from swabs using mass spectrometry grade water then aliquoted for CRP analysis.

The Braden scale is used to assess the risk of patients with pressure injuries (PIs), but there are limitations to the prediction of PI healing. There is a lack of tools for evaluating PI healing and outcome in clinical practice.
The purpose of this study was to examine the ability of the Braden scale to predict the outcome and prognosis of PIs in older patients.
Outcome indicator was the wound healing rate of patients with PIs at discharge. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness-of-fit test were used to evaluate the discrimination and calibration.
Completed data were available for 309 patients, 181 of whom (58.6%) were male. The Braden scale had poor discrimination to predict the outcome and prognosis of PIs with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.63 (95% CI, 0.56-0.70; P = .01). Subgroup analyses showed the Braden scale had low diagnostic value for patients aged over 90 years (AUCROC = 0.56; 95% CI, 0.17-0.96; P = .738), patients with respiratory diseases (AUCROC = 0.51; 95% CI, 0.37-0.65; P = .908), and digestive system diseases (AUCROC = 0.59; 95% CI, 0.42-0.75; P = .342). The level of calibration ability by Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness-of-fit test was acceptable, defined as P >.200 (χ2 = 6.59; P = .473). In patients aged more than 90 years (χ2 = 4.88; P = .431) and female patients (χ2 = 7.03; P = .425), the Braden scale was also fitting. It was not suitable for patients with respiratory diseases (χ2 = 11.35; P = .078).

Debridement is the cornerstone of wound care management. It allows for the removal of fibrinous and necrotic debris from the wound bed as well as the reduction of bacterial bioburden, thus allowing for proper granulation and wound healing. Hydrosurgical debridement uses a controlled, high-pressure fluid jet to cut and remove necrotic debris, contaminants, and bacteria, thereby facilitating a potentially more aggressive debridement.
The efficacy of this system was compared with that of other methods of debridement in reducing readmissions due to surgical site infections (SSIs).
Two Current Procedural Terminology codes were used to identify 289 unique patients treated for lower extremity wounds. All patients were treated at a vascular surgery service in a large tertiary care wound program from January 2016 to June 2018. Chart review on wound management was performed. A total of 190 of the 289 patients underwent wound debridement over the course of treatment. Logistic regression was calculated with subsequultiple options to consider when formulating an approach for wound management, including the method of debridement used. One goal of debridement is to decrease the bacterial bioburden in the wound bed to both encourage better wound healing and decrease the rate of wound infections. The present study found that the use of hydrosurgical debridement was associated with decreased SSI readmissions, which could potentially result in better wound care for the patient and possibly decreased health care costs because of a lower rate of readmissions. Further investigation of these 2 potential outcomes is necessary.
