ADHD Evaluation
A thorough evaluation is required to determine if someone has ADHD. A diagnosis is made by analyzing the symptoms that began before the age of 12 and interfere significantly with work, school or social situations.
Rating scales are frequently used as instruments for assessing ADHD. The CAARS-L: S is a self-rating instrument with confirmed validity. The observer version of CAARS-L:O has been found to be valid.
Signs and symptoms
Many children are impulsive, fidgety or have difficulty waiting their turn. When a child has these issues to the extent that they affect his or her daily functioning and cause distress at home, in school and in activities as well as in relationships, they may meet the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. Health care providers use the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition Text Revision (DSM-5) guidelines to determine if they are a victim of ADHD. The symptoms have to be present for at least six months and have affected the person's life in multiple settings, such as working and at home. They must also interfere in academic, social or career achievement.
The provider will ask the patient about their current health issues and if they began before 12 years old. A thorough mental health history is taken. The provider will speak to the person's parents, teachers and other people familiar with their behavior and schooling history. The doctor will also search for signs that indicate that other ailments or conditions could be causing symptoms in the person, such as thyroid conditions, learning disorders, mood disorders, head injuries and so on.

In general, those with ADHD have more issues in the areas of attention and concentration as opposed to hyperactivity and impulsivity. They are more likely to suffer from difficulties with learning and suffer from anxiety or depression. They are at greater risk of being injured due to their impulsive behavior or poor organizational skills, and they may also have problems with self-medication (such as using drugs or alcohol) and addiction to substances.
Psychological Testing
To determine if a patient has ADHD, a patient must undergo psychological tests. This enables healthcare providers to identify cognitive impairments that could compound the problem and complicate treatment. It also allows them to identify other mental health problems that could be associated with ADHD.
Psychological tests could include memory, intelligence, attention and language assessment. They could also include a wide-ranging scale that tests for mental disorders, such as anxiety and depression. In some cases the psychologist may interview family members as well as friends and colleagues regarding the person's behavior. This is referred to as a collateral or a secondary interview and can be extremely helpful in establishing a clear picture of the symptoms.

The test measures how well a person can pay attention and respond to visual clues.
The clinician will also ask about the individual's work and school performance and how conditions affect their daily routine. They will inquire if the person forgets appointments, loses items or has trouble following through on their plans. They may also inquire about their relationships, and if they have difficulty managing their emotions.
The doctor will perform an examination of the physical. The patient must wear comfortable clothes and no jewelry. A medical history will be taken and the clinician will look for indications of anxiety or depression that may co-exist with ADHD.
