By embracing silicon photonics with chalcogenide phase-change materials (PCMs), non-volatile integrated photonic memory is developed with promising potential in photonic integrated circuits and nanophotonic applications. While conventional PCMs suffer from slow crystallization speed, scandium-doped antimony telluride (SST) has been recently developed for ultrafast phase-change random-access memory applications. An ultrafast non-volatile photonic memory based on an SST thin film with a 2 ns write/erase speed is demonstrated, which is the fastest write/erase speed ever reported in integrated phase-change photonic devices. SST-based photonic memories exhibit multilevel capabilities and good stability at room temperature. By mapping the memory level to the biological synapse weight, an artificial neural network based on photonic memory devices is successfully established for image classification. Additionally, a reflective nanodisplay application using SST with optoelectronic modulation capabilities is demonstrated. Both the optical and electrical changes in SST during the phase transition and the fast-switching speed demonstrate their potential for use in photonic computing, neuromorphic computing, nanophotonics, and optoelectronic applications.
Oral hygiene plays an important role in eliminating biofilms and preventing dental caries. However, the implementation of oral health knowledge that children learn from their parents and through school dental health programmes remains poorly studied. This study aimed to investigate oral hygiene knowledge and its practical utilization in children and young adolescents (CYAs) aged 2-15 years.

This was a questionnaire-based, interview-style community survey and on-site practical assessment of CYAs' toothbrushing skills conducted during two 1-day public science-promoting events held at a major German university hospital in consecutive years. CYAs first answered questions on toothbrushing frequency, dental aids used, and dental care. They subsequently underwent diagnostic staining and demonstrated their brushing technique and method. CYAs' responses (percentages) to questionnaire items addressing oral hygiene knowledge and practice, and on-site assessment of toothbrushing skills served as the main outcome meas2/244 (13%) exhibiting poor adherence.

CYAs knew about the importance of oral hygiene and cleaned their teeth frequently. However, translation of their knowledge into practice showed deficiencies. Repeated encouragement to put oral health knowledge into practice is important.

Phage resistance poses a great threat to the development of phage therapy. Hence, it is both essential and important to understand the mechanism of phage resistance in bacteria. First identified in Mycobacterium smegmatis, the gene mpr, upon overexpression, confers resistance against D29 mycobacteriophage. Presently, the mechanism behind phage resistance by mpr is poorly understood. Here we show that Mpr is a membrane-bound DNA exonuclease, which digests DNA in a non-specific manner independent of the sequence, and shares no sequence or structural similarity with any known nuclease. Exonuclease activity of mpr provides resistance against phage infection, but the role of mpr may very well go beyond just phage resistance. Our experiments show that mpr plays a crucial role in the appearance of mutant colonies (phage resistant strains). However, the molecular mechanism behind the emergence of these mutant/resistant colonies is yet to be understood. Nevertheless, it appears that mpr is involved in the survival and evolution of M. smegmatis against phage. A similar mechanism may be present in other organisms, which requires further exploration.BackgroundThis study proposes a review of nutraceuticals used in the treatment of typical symptoms of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).The aim is to provide a classification of the most widely used nutraceutical supplements identifying the most effective nutraceuticals on glucose and insulin metabolism, the androgenic hormone profile, fertility, ovulatory capacity, inflammation, and oxidative stress.Material and MethodsWe included randomized controlled trials on PCOS patients undergoing administration of nutraceuticals, in particular vitamin D, vitamin E, probiotics, and inositols. These administrations are variable in terms of dosage, single supplementation, or combined with other compounds, dosage, and duration of the intervention.ResultsThe supplementation of inositols, at the physiologic ratio of 40 1 of myo- and D-chiro-inositols, resulted to be the most effective in improving the glucose homeostasis and fertility, with a restoration of ovulatory capacity and menstrual regularity. Other nutraceuticals are particularly effective in reducing hyperandrogenism, with promising results demonstrated by the combinations of vitamin D and probiotics, vitamin E and coenzyme Q10, and the enrichment of inositol therapy with group B vitamins. An improvement in the inflammatory status and antioxidant capacity is obtained with the co-supplementation of probiotics and selenium or with vitamin E combined with omega 3.ConclusionsInositol supplementation is effective in the treatment of insulin resistance and fertility. Probiotics reduced hyperandrogenism, inflammatory and oxidative conditions, and resulted more effective when combined with selenium. Although these results proved to be satisfactory, further studies are needed with larger samples and a more homogeneous analysis of the outcomes. In nucleotide excision repair (NER), the xeroderma pigmentosum D helicase (XPD) scans DNA searching for bulky lesions, stalls when encountering such damage to verify its presence, and allows repair to proceed. Structural studies have shown XPD bound to its single-stranded DNA substrate, but molecular and dynamic characterization of how XPD translocates on undamaged DNA and how it stalls to verify lesions remains poorly understood. Here, we have performed extensive all-atom MD simulations of human XPD bound to undamaged and damaged ssDNA, containing a mutagenic pyrimidine (6-4) pyrimidone UV photoproduct (6-4PP), near the XPD pore entrance. We characterize how XPD responds to the presence of the DNA lesion, delineating the atomistic-scale mechanism that it utilizes to discriminate between damaged and undamaged nucleotides. We identify key amino acid residues, including FeS residues R112, R196, H135, K128, Arch residues E377 and R380, and ATPase lobe 1 residues 215-221, that are involved in damage verification and show how movements of Arch and ATPase lobe 1 domains relative to the FeS domain modulate these interactions. These structural and dynamic molecular depictions of XPD helicase activity with unmodified DNA and its inhibition by the lesion elucidate how the lesion is verified by inducing XPD stalling. To date, only a few studies have examined whether and when stressed individuals are still prosocially motivated and willing to help others, which is in contrast to the relevance and importance that helping others has for our society. The present study investigates the impact of affective and biopsychological acute stress responses on prosociality (prosocial motivation, helping behavior) under controlled laboratory conditions. In addition, it was examined whether this relationship is affected by individuals' current life stress and the cognitive ability to keep stress-related thoughts at bay. To induce acute stress responses (heart rate, negative affect, salivary alpha-amylase, cortisol), 55 individuals (28 women, M = 24 years old, SD = 4.53) were exposed to the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Current life stress (cortisol) was assessed over two days of participants' everyday lives. Thought control ability was assessed with the think/no-think paradigm and was additionally manipulated after the acute stress intervention (TSST) via instructions. The results showed that acute stress was positively associated with prosociality. Specifically, negative affect was positively related to prosocial motivation and salivary alpha-amylase was positively associated with helping behavior. Current life stress moderated the relationship between salivary cortisol and helping behavior the association was positive at low levels of current life stress. The instruction to control one's thoughts but not participants' general ability to do so reduced stress responses (negative affect). In sum, the findings suggest that prosociality increases following acute stress and that this effect depends on the level of current life stress. Additionally, adopting the strategy of controlling stress-related thoughts was found to be promising for attenuating individuals' stress responses.Atomic-resolution electron microscopy imaging of solid-state material is a powerful method for structural analysis. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is one of the actively used techniques to directly observe atoms in materials. However, some materials are easily damaged by the electron beam irradiation, and only noisy images are available when we decrease the electron dose to avoid beam damages. Therefore, a denoising process is necessary for precise structural analysis in low-dose STEM. In this study, we propose total variation (TV) denoising algorithm to remove quantum noise in an STEM image. We defined an entropy of STEM image that corresponds to the image contrast to determine a hyperparameter and we found that there is a hyperparameter that maximizes the entropy. We acquired atomic-resolution STEM image of CaF2 viewed along the [001] direction and executed TV denoising. The atomic columns of Ca and F are clearly visualized by the TV denoising, and atomic positions of Ca and F are determined with the error of ±1 pm and ±4 pm, respectively.Aim The miR-138-5p promoter-methylated DNA level, miR-138-5p and PDL1 expression were investigated in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. Materials & methods miR-138-5p promoter methylation status and miR-138-5p expression were investigated using the MethyLight and qPCR method, respectively. For measuring PDL-1, we applied the Bioassay Technology Elisa kit. Results The percentage of methylated reference values of plasma and tissue samples from patients was higher than control groups. The area under curve presented a sensitivity of 55% and a specificity of 82.5% for plasma samples. Compared with the control groups, lower expression of miR-138-5p and higher concentration of PDL1 protein were observed in the patients group. Conclusion CRC may be detected early by identifying miR-138-5p methylated DNA in plasma as a diagnostic biomarker.
