The gathered in-situ hyperspectral data were resampled to the spectral waveband configurations of S2 and three representative EMs were inferred, namely (1) Striga, (2) crop and other weeds, and (3) soil. Overall classification accuracies of 88% and 78% for the pixel-based cropland mapping and subpixel Striga detection were achieved, respectively. Furthermore, an F-score (0.84) and a root mean square error (0.0075) showed that the MESMA subpixel algorithm provides plausible results for predicting the relative abundance of Striga within each S2 pixel at a landscape scale. The capability of MESMA together with a cropland classification hierarchical approach was thus proven to be suited for Striga detection in a heterogenous agroecological system. These results can be used to guide in the adaptation, mitigation, and remediation of already infested areas, thereby avoiding further Striga infestation of new croplands.Trace elements in atmospheric particulate matter play a significant role in air quality, health and biogeochemical cycles. The present study reports on geochemical characteristics of size-resolved trace elements in PM10 aerosols collected under different air masses over a coastal urban location in peninsular India. A contrast in elemental distribution was observed for the particle size above 7.0 μm and below 1.1 μm under the influence of northeasterly air masses as characterized by Al > Fe > Zn and Fe > Al > Zn, respectively. The concentrations of the crustal elements (Al, Fe, Ti, P, Ba, Co) were high and illustrated by a unimodal size distribution with a peak in coarse mode (>2.0 μm) during northwesterly air masses. On the other hand, combustion-derived metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, Sb, and Pb) were maximized under northeasterly air masses, characterized by unimodal size distribution with a peak in fine mode (7.0 μm, whereas combustion related emissions such as vehicular and traffic sources are predominant for particles less then 1.1 μm. The present study demonstrates that trace metals in coastal urban aerosols are affected by changes in emission sources/strengths and regional transport of air masses originated from the northeasterly and northwesterly parts of the tropical Indian subcontinent.Biochar, an effective and low-cost amendment for immobilizing heavy metals, has been extensively studied. However, the simultaneous inhibition effects of biochar on the plant uptake for arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) in co-contaminated soils are still ambiguous due to their distinct environmental behaviors. A meta-analysis was conducted to quantitatively assess the effects using 1030 individual observations from 52 articles. On average, biochar application significantly decreased the bioavailability of Cd in soils by 50.12%, while slightly increased the bioavailability of As in soils by 2.39%. The more instructive result is that biochar application could also simultaneously reduce the concentration of As and Cd in plants by 25.48% and 38.66%, respectively. The orders of the decreased percentage of As and Cd in various tissues were root 30 g/kg) were more conducive to reduce the bioaccumulation of As and Cd simultaneously in co-contaminated soils. Pristine and modified biochar could inhibit As and Cd accumulation in crops, but their efficiencies need to be further improved to ensure the safety of crop productions. Overall, the meta-analysis suggests that biochar has the potential to remedy the As and Cd co-contaminated soils.Freshwater lakes are regarded as important methane (CH4) sources, accounting for ~20% of natural emission. To improve the assessment of the global greenhouse effect, it is necessary to consider spatial variability within lakes. Here, CH4 concentrations in the water column and sediment layers, as well as the sediment CH4 production potentials and diffusive fluxes, were studied in the littoral, intermediate, and profundal zones of the medium-sized (425 ha), deep (maximum depth 69.5 m) Lake Stechlin (Germany). Sediment CH4 concentrations, production potentials and sediment-water interface diffusive fluxes showed significant spatial heterogeneity and were highest in the profundal zone. CH4 concentrations in the surface water did not differ among the studied locations, indicating a decoupling from the production sites in the sediment. VIT2763 The high amount of CH4 in profundal sediments that might potentially be released to the atmosphere is either trapped or oxidized within the water column, while the surface water dissolved CH4 is more related to the dynamics in the epilimnion. The divergence in sediment physical (water content, grain size) and chemical (organic matter quantity or quality, sulfate) properties across the lake leads to variations in CH4 dynamics which are restricted to deeper habitats in this type of lake.In this research, the impact of municipal green industry policies in 15 cities on the economic and environmental performance of local companies was evaluated, and the policy coordination mechanism was studied. As a dual-goal policy mix, the green industrial policy has been used by Chinese municipal governments to solve the dilemma between the economic growth and environmental mitigation. However, the quantitative evaluation of these green industrial policy trials remains limited. To address this issue, the policy evaluation in this research applied sewage discharge data and operation data of 22,670 Chinese textile firms from 1998 to 2013 from Chinese Environmental Statistics Database. Fixed-effect regression analysis and dynamic difference-in-differences (DID) approach were used to assess the dual-faceted impacts of green industrial policies and their subtypes, as well as the continuity of these impacts. The findings suggest that adopting a dual-objective green industrial policy is an effective approach to enreen industry policy theory.Electron transfer (redox) reactions, mediated by soil microbiota, modulate elemental cycling and, in part, establish the redox poise of soil systems. Understanding soil redox processes significantly improves our ability to characterize coupled biogeochemical cycling in soils and aids in soil health management. Redox-sensitive species exhibit different reactivity, mobility, and toxicity subjected to their redox state. Thus, it is crucial to quantify the redox potential (Eh) in soils and to characterize the dominant redox couples therein. Several, often coupled, external drivers, can influence Eh. Among these factors, soil hydrology dominates. It controls soil physical properties that in turn further regulates Eh. Soil spatial heterogeneity and temporally dynamic hydrologic regimes yield complex distributions of Eh. Soil redox processes have been studied under various environmental conditions, including relatively static and dynamic hydrologic regimes. Our focus here is on dynamic, variably water-saturated environments.
