The successful fabrication and application of the environment-oriented single layer ceramic membranes from the Al-Si-O solid waste matrix provided a promising "waste-to-resource" strategy for beneficial utilization of typical solid wastes as ceramic raw materials.Continuous release of the highly toxic triphenyltin compounds (TPT) from antifouling paints and fungicides has caused serious pollution to urbanized coastal marine environments worldwide since the 1960s. Using gas-chromatography mass-spectrometry (GC-MS), this study investigated the distribution profile of TPT in 15 types of tissues of four marine teleost fish species collected from Hong Kong waters. Concentrations of TPT in various tissues had a significant positive correlation with protein contents in the tissues (r = 0.346, p  less then  0.001) and, to a lesser extent with lipid contents (r = 0.169, p =  0.020). Highest concentrations of TPT were consistently found in liver, ranging from 1074.9 to 3443.7 ng/g wet weight; whereas fish scales always contained the least concentration of TPT in all species, ranging from 10.4 to 48.5 ng/g wet weight. Through mass balance models and regression analyses, muscle tissues were found to contribute most to the total TPT body burden, and the average TPT concentration of both dorsal and ventral muscles was identified as the best predictor for estimating TPT burden in the entire fish. Hence, further investigations of bioaccumulation and biomagnification of TPT in fishes should adopt this modelling approach in estimating its total body burden in individual fish.Developing efficient and robust materials for emerging electrodegradation of organic pollutants has attracted broad interests. In this study, a novel controlled pyrolysis approach was employed to fabricate a quasi-MOF derivative-based electrode by pyrolyzing MIL-101(Fe) anchored on a polyaniline-modified carbon fiber paper at 400 °C. The construction of the accessible Fe-O sites, and the in situ generation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles with graphene-like carbon layers coated, would enhance the electro-Fenton activity of the electrode, which was used as the cathode. The results showed that 100 % of 50 mg L-1 p-nitrophenol and 52 % total organic carbon were removed in 120 min under a current density of 5 mA cm-2, suggesting that the prepared electrode had a more efficient mineralization current efficiency and less energy consumption compared with electrodes before pyrolysis. This new pyrolysis strategy is expected to serve as a paradigm for designing efficient electrode in electro-Fenton remediation field.In this study, fragments of polyethylene plastic bags were treated with simulated gastric juice of fish for 16 h. Following solid-phase extraction, methanol eluents caused acute toxicity to embryos and larvae of Japanese medaka. Chromatographic fractions (polar to more non-polar with numbers increasing) of the extract were evaluated for toxicity and estrogenic activity using medaka and an estrogen receptor (ER) cell-line. Fractions 6 and 9 had the highest estrogenic effects with relative hydrophobic chemicals. The vtg expression in fraction 6 was 22-fold higher than control, and the ER cellular response in fraction 9 was 8.5-fold higher than controls. Following non-target screening (NTS), several novel phthalates and phenols were identified in the above two fractions. Fractions 1 and 2 appeared to be primarily responsible for the acute toxicity observed with the whole extract. The hatching rate decreased to 36 % in fraction 2, and was not observed following exposure to fraction 1. NTS of these fractions indicated 635 and 808 entities, respectively, most without toxicity information. These results indicate plastic leachates from gastric juices of fish are complex mixtures of many compounds that can have acute reproductive and sublethal endocrine impacts in fish.An innovative foam-based method for Fenton reagents (FR) and bacteria delivery was assessed for the in situ remediation of a petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated unsaturated zone. The surfactant foam was first injected, then reagent solutions were delivered and propagated through the network of foam lamellae with a piston-like effect. Bench-scale experiments demonstrated the feasibility of the various treatments with hydrocarbon (HC) removal efficiencies as high as 96 %. Compared to the direct injection of FR solutions, the foam-based method led to larger radii of influence and more isotropic reagents delivery, whereas it did not show any detrimental effect regarding HC oxidation. Despite 25 % of HCs were expelled from the treated zone because of high foam viscosity, average degradation rates were increased by 20 %. At field-scale, foam and reagent solutions injections in soil were tracked both using visual observation and differential electric resistivity tomography. The latter demonstrated the controlled delivery of the reactive solutions using the foam-based method. Even if the foam-based method duration is about 5-times longer than the direct injection of amendment solutions, it provides important benefits, such as the confinement of harmful volatile hydrocarbons during Fenton treatments, the enhanced reagents delivery and the 30 % lower consumption of the latter.The electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) and more recently the heated tobacco products (HTP) provide alternatives for smokers as they are generally perceived to be less harmful than conventional cigarettes. However, it is crucial to compare the health risks of these different emergent devices, in order to determine which product should be preferred to substitute cigarette. The present study aimed to compare the composition of emissions from HTP, e-cigs and conventional cigarettes, regarding selected harmful or potentially harmful compounds, and their toxic impacts on the human bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B cells. The HTP emitted less polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and carbonyls than the conventional cigarette. However, amounts of these compounds in HTP aerosols were still higher than in e-cig vapours. Concordantly, HTP aerosol showed reduced cytotoxicity compared to cigarette smoke but higher than e-cig vapours. HTP and e-cig had the potential to increase oxidative stress and inflammatory response, in a manner similar to that of cigarette smoke, but after more intensive exposures.
