Purpose Knowing target location can improve adults' speech-in-speech recognition in complex auditory environments, but it is unknown whether young children listen selectively in space. This study evaluated masked word recognition with and without a pretrial cue to location to characterize the influence of listener age and masker type on the benefit of spatial cues. Method Participants were children (5-13 years of age) and adults with normal hearing. Testing occurred in a 180° arc of 11 loudspeakers. Targets were spondees produced by a female talker and presented from a randomly selected loudspeaker; that location was either known, based on a pretrial cue, or unknown. Maskers were two sequences comprising spondees or speech-shaped noise bursts, each presented from a random loudspeaker. Speech maskers were produced by one male talker or by three talkers, two male and one female. Results Children and adults benefited from the pretrial cue to target location with the three-voice masker, and the magnitude of benefit increased with increasing child age. There was no benefit of location cues in the one-voice or noise-burst maskers. Incorrect responses in the three-voice masker tended to correspond to masker words produced by the female talker, and in the location-known condition, those masker intrusions were more likely near the cued loudspeaker for both age groups. Conclusions Increasing benefit of the location cue with increasing child age in the three-voice masker suggests maturation of spatially selective attention, but error patterns do not support this idea. Differences in performance in the location-unknown condition could play a role in the differential benefit of the location cue.Systemic hypertension or hypertension is a very common chronic age-related disease worldwide. It is typically characterised by a sustained elevation of blood pressure, particularly when the systolic blood pressure and/or diastolic blood pressure are of more than 140 mmHg and 90 mmHg, respectively. If hypertension is not well controlled, it may lead to an increased risk of stroke and heart attack. It has been shown that hypertension is linked to various ocular diseases, including cataract, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma. Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Primary open angle glaucoma is the most common form of the disease and is usually characterised by an increase in intraocular pressure. This condition, together with normal tension glaucoma, constitutes open angle glaucoma. Systemic hypertension has been identified as a risk factor for open angle glaucoma. It is speculated that blood pressure is involved in the pathogenesis of open angle glaucoma by altering intraocular pressure or ocular blood flow, or both. Recent evidence has shown that both extremely high and low blood pressure are associated with increased risk of open angle glaucoma. Additional pathogenic mechanisms, including increased inflammation likely to be involved in the development and progression of these two diseases, are discussed.Cannibalistic fantasies underlie some core mechanisms in psychoanalysis identification, incorporation, introjection, and internalization. Freud (1917) saw melancholia as an incorporation of the object by devouring it, and Julia Kristeva (1989) takes the melancholic cannibalistic imagination to be a repudiation of loss, a destruction in order to possess the object. The author argues that cannibalism is a useful concept for understanding the double dynamics of trichotillomania and trichophagy - as destructive disconnection followed by incorporation of the hair; both suggest a magical reconnection with what was disconnected in order to establish a bond with the mother/analyst. The paradoxical passion of consuming the object of desire, symbolized here by the hair (resembling an umbilical cord and connection to the maternal object) captures the cannibalistic fantasy of never losing the object by destroying it.This article explores defensive modes of masochism based through the case study of Sarah, a 25-year-old patient who is regularly followed in psychoanalytical therapy. I will postulate the idea that fetishization of moral masochism should be seen from the perspective of melancholic processes. Drawing on several moments of her therapy, I will illustrate how the primitive idealization of the introjected and denigrated object in the melancholic process lays the conditions for a decisive moral masochism, and whose unconscious idealization defends against depressive breakdown.Deficits in gastrointestinal (GI) paracellular permeability has been implicated in etiology of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), and E-cadherin, a key component of the epithelial junctional complex, has been implicated in both barrier function and IBD. We have previously described antibodies against E-cadherin that activate cell adhesion, and in this study, we show that they increase transepithelial electrical resistance in epithelial cell monolayers in vitro. We therefore tested the hypothesis that adhesion activating E-cadherin mAbs will enhance epithelial barrier function in vivo and limit progression of inflammation in IBD. Activating mAbs to mouse E-cadherin were tested in different mouse models of IBD including the IL10-/- and adoptive T cell transfer models of colitis. Previously established histological and biomarker measures of inflammation were evaluated to monitor disease progression. Mouse E-cadherin activating mAb treatment reduced total colitis score, individual histological measures of inflammation, and other hallmarks of inflammation compared to control treatment. Activating mAbs also reduced the fecal accumulation lipocalin2 and albumin content, consistent with enhanced barrier function. Therefore, E-cadherin activation could be a potential strategy for limiting inflammation in UC.
Eye injuries, both accidental and non-accidental, are a significant cause of long-term visual impairment in children. An understanding of when and how such injuries occur is key to development of adequate prevention strategies.
To evaluate accidental and non-accidental eye injuries in children presenting to the major tertiary emergency department and outpatient ophthalmology clinic in Western Australia during the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown and to determine whether the frequency or nature of these injuries differed from pre-pandemic presentations.
Retrospective review of the medical records of paediatric patients presenting to the emergency department and specialist ophthalmology clinic with an ocular injury and those presenting to the hospital Child Protection Unit with physical injuries during March-August 2020 and the same period in 2019.
There was no significant difference in the total number of accidental eye injury presentations during the lockdown period despite a significant decrease in emergxal trauma sustained at home continues to be a significant cause for hospital attendance. Public education regarding in-home eye injury prevention must be ongoing.Providing care to a family member with disabilities takes a toll on the health of the caregiver and the family. Among aging caregivers, compound caregiving (i.e., caring for two or more family members) has become an increasingly common scenario. However, few research studies have focused on compound caregivers. Extant literature describes individual-level outcomes, with sparse knowledge on family-level outcomes. The family quality of life framework was used in this study to examine differences in the individual and family health of aging compound and noncompound caregivers. Web-based cross-sectional data collected from 112 aging caregivers (age 50 and older) were analyzed using chi-square and independent sample t-tests to examine differences between caregivers. Compound caregivers had poorer perceptions of personal health than noncompound caregivers. In terms of family health, although all caregivers shared similar perceptions on the importance, opportunities, initiative, and stability, compound caregivers had lower attainment and satisfaction than noncompound caregivers. Multivariate regression analyses indicated that compound caregiving was associated with poorer family health. Personal health was positively associated with family health. Study findings have practice implications for identifying caregivers' multiple responsibilities. It is necessary to develop individual and family level programs focused on health promotion and caregiver training.Since conventional processes for treating textile effluents have limitations, this work aimed to investigate the application of advanced oxidation technology in this type of matrix. Initially, for a textile dyes mixture in solution, the photo-Fenton/sunlight process proved to be the most efficient among other systems tested. During the tests it was found that the degradation kinetics depends of the pH and catalyst and oxidant concentrations. After 60 min under optimized conditions, the color was reduced by 98.19%, with 92.52% organic matter conversion. Ecotoxicity tests with the Lactuca Sativa vegetable indicated that the dyes were not totally oxidized to inert compounds, although the treated solution did not cause a significant toxic effect for this species. In the second stage of the research, the photodegradation in real samples of textile wastewater was evaluated. Acetosyringone The efficiency of the photo-Fenton/sunlight process was lower than that obtained for the dyes solution, a fact attributed to the greater complexity of the real matrix. However, the data also indicated that the combination of coagulation/flocculation and advanced oxidation processes is the most suitable methodology to reduce the fraction of biodegradable compounds. In summary, research has revealed that photocatalytic degradation of dyes through advanced oxidation is an efficient treatment.
Frontloaded visual field testing (twice per eye per session) is well-tolerated by patients and technicians, representing a viable strategy that can be implemented in routine clinical practice to capture enough clinical perimetry data for effective disease diagnosis, surveillance and management.
To determine the experiences of patients and technicians following the implementation of frontloaded visual field testing (multiple tests per eye within the same session) in a glaucoma service.
This was a retrospective, cross-sectional study. A written questionnaire was administered to patients (three questions) attending the glaucoma service at the Centre for Eye Health for glaucoma assessment and to their administering perimetry technicians (two questions). The questionnaire was administered after static automated perimetry (24-2 SITA-Faster on the Humphrey Field Analyzer) was performed twice for each eye (frontloaded) within the same session. Respondents were asked to provide a 1-5 Likert scale response to quetloaded visual field testing was well-tolerated by patients and technicians. Strategies that may be helpful for other clinics to adopt this new paradigm are described.Early growth response-1 (Egr1) is a zinc-finger transcription factor that plays a critical role in controlling cell growth, proliferation, differentiation, angiogenesis, and apoptosis. Egr1 is induced by many growth factors, cytokines, and stress signals and is also known to be involved in several pathological conditions like cancer, neurological and ocular disorders. The DNA binding domain of Egr1 is a highly conserved Cys2His2 (C2H2) zinc finger (ZNF) domain which specifically binds to GC-rich consensus sequence GcG (G/T) GGGCG and activates transcription. As the C2H2 domain specifically recognizes its DNA target, the mutations spanning this region shall perturb DNA recognition and may hinder transcription of target genes. Therefore, in this study, the missense mutations occurring specifically at the DNA binding domain (DBD) of Egr1 were probed by computational approaches involving in silico screening of pathogenic and functional mutants coupled with extensive molecular dynamics simulations, to determine the mutants that affect its structural stability and interactions with DNA.
