We investigated for the first time the presence of chronic changes in the functional organization of sensorimotor brain areas induced by prolonged training with a bidirectional hand prosthesis.
A multimodal neurophysiological and neuroimaging evaluation of brain functional changes occurring during training in five consecutive amputees participating to experimental trials with robotic hands over a period of 10years was carried out. In particular, modifications to the functional anatomy of sensorimotor brain areas under resting conditions were explored in order to check for eventual changes with respect to baseline.
Full evidence is provided to demonstrate brain functional changes, and some of them in both the hemispheres and others restricted to the hemisphere contralateral to the amputation/prosthetic hand.

Affected individuals in the autosomal dominant family had onset of symmetrical neuropathy with demyelinating and secondary axonal features at around age 30, showing signs of gradual progression with severe distal leg weakness and hand involvement in the proband at age 64. Exome sequencing identified a heterozygous ITPR3 p.Val615Met variant segregating with the disease. The individual who was the only affected in his family had disease onset at age 4 with demyelinating neuropathy. His condition was progressive, leading to severe muscle atrophy below knees and atrophy of proximal leg and hand muscles by age 16. Circulating monocytes and other innate immune cells are among the first ones to recognize and clear pathogens. Monocytes have an important role in sepsis and septic shock and have been studied as potential diagnostic markers. In total, forty-two patients with septic shock were recruited and blood samples obtained within first 12 hours of ICU admission. We showed that frequency of classical and intermediate monocytes assessed at the time of admission to the intensive care unit are significantly distinct in patients with septic shock who survived longer that five days from those who died. These parameters correlate significantly with differences in serum levels of inflammatory cytokines MCP-1, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and IL-18, and with the proportion of helper and cytotoxic T cells. The described changes in frequency of monocyte subsets and their activation status may predict short-term septic shock survival and help with fast identification of the group of vulnerable patients, who may profit from tailored therapy.Rectovaginal group B streptococcal (GBS) colonisation affects approximately 30% of pregnant women, which significantly increases the use of antibiotics in mothers and babies. In this review, we aim to answer two questions (i) In pregnant women, does the use of probiotics prevent GBS colonisation prior to delivery when compared with placebo; and (ii) In GBS positive pregnant women, does the use of probiotics reduce the risk of GBS colonisation prior to delivery when compared with standard treatment. Pubmed, Cochrane library, EMBASE, OVID, clinical trials.gov, grey literature and conference proceedings were systematically searched to identify eligible trials. References of included trials were also reviewed. A total of four studies (n = 402) were included in the final review. Two studies reported on the prevention of GBS colonisation in healthy pregnant women, and two studies reported on the rate of GBS clearance after probiotic administration. Meta-analysis of the two studies using random effects model indicated that GBS clearance with probiotics was not statistically significant with odds ratio 2.
