Conjunctivitis, chalazion and blepharitis are routinely managed by optometrists. However, it is especially important to consider the diagnosis of canaliculitis in patients with chronic or recurrent conditions.

This study aimed to report the clinical features, radiological findings and treatment outcomes in patients with plug-related canaliculitis.

This retrospective study included patients with canaliculitis secondary to plug insertion between 2007 and 2020. All data regarding epidemiological characteristics, clinical presentation, isolated microorganisms, computed tomography imaging findings, treatment, and outcomes were analysed.

A total of 20 plug-related canaliculitis from 19 patients (18.3%) among all 109 cases of canaliculitis were identified. All patients with plug-related canaliculitis were females with a past history of lacrimal plug insertion for dry eye (mean age 58.2 years). Most patients were initially treated as conjunctivitis with the mean time lapse to a diagnosis of 5.2 months. The avion tissue is important for early diagnosis and to ensure a good outcome.

Surfactant has been routinely used in the neonatal population, particularly in the setting of prematurity and neonatal respiratory distress syndrome. Current evidence, however, does not delineate the effect of surfactant use in neonates and older children during cardiac surgery admissions. This study aimed to characterize the impact of surfactant on pediatric cardiac surgery admissions.

Admissions of those under 18years of age with cardiac surgery were identified from the Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) database between 2004 and 2015, using ICD-9 procedure codes. Univariate analyses were conducted to compare admission characteristics between those that did and not utilize surfactant. Variables shown to be significant were then entered as independent variables into the regression analyses. Surfactant was entered into each model as an independent variable.

A total of 81,313 admissions met the inclusion criteria. Of these, 109 (0.1%) had surfactant utilized. Univariate analyses identified severallel circulation.
Surfactant administration during pediatric cardiac surgery admissions is independently associated with a sixfold increase in inpatient mortality. It is likely that these findings are mediated by augmentation of the decrease in pulmonary vascular resistance and a subsequent decrease in systemic blood flow in the setting of parallel circulation. Surfactant should be administered with special consideration in neonates with cardiac disease and may be best avoided in those with parallel circulation.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the reliability and validity of the ReVeRe
word list recall test (RWLRT), which uses speech recognition, when administered remotely and unsupervised.

Prospective cohort study. Participants included 249 cognitively intact community dwelling older adults. Measures included clinician administered neuropsychological assessments at baseline and unsupervised remotely administered tests of cognition from six time-points oversix months.

The RWLRT showed acceptable validity. Reliability coefficients varied across time points, with poor reliability between times 1 and 2 and fair-to-good reliability across the remaining five testing sessions. Practice effects were observed with repeated administration as expected.
