852 (sensitivity and specificity, 76.6%). The main independent risk factors associated with 72-h mortality among patients with AST levels ≥ 3000 U/L included higher serum values of alkaline phosphatase, creatine kinase, serum sodium, potassium, and phosphorus.Despite the unique physiology and metabolic pathways of microbiomes from cold environments providing key evolutionary insights and promising leads for discovering new bioactive compounds, cultivable bacteria entrapped in perennial ice from caves remained a largely unexplored life system. In this context, we obtained and characterized bacterial strains from 13,000-years old ice core of Scarisoara Ice Cave, providing first isolates from perennial ice accumulated in caves since Late Glacial, and first culture-based evidences of bacterial resistome and antimicrobial compounds production. Proteasome assay The 68 bacterial isolates belonged to 4 phyla, 34 genera and 56 species, with 17 strains representing putative new taxa. The Gram-negative cave bacteria (Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes) were more resistant to the great majority of antibiotic classes than the Gram-positive ones (Actinobacteria, Firmicutes). More than 50% of the strains exhibited high resistance to 17 classes of antibiotics. Some of the isolates inhibited the growth of clinically important Gram-positive and Gram-negative resistant strains and revealed metabolic features with applicative potential. The current report on bacterial strains from millennia-old cave ice revealed promising candidates for studying the evolution of environmental resistome and for obtaining new active biomolecules for fighting the antibiotics crisis, and valuable cold-active biocatalysts.Biodiesel is of high interest due to increased demand for energy with the concern regarding more sustainable production processes. However, an inevitable by-product is glycerol. Hence, the conversion of this by-product to higher-value chemicals, especially 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) via glycerol hydrogenolysis reaction, is one of the most effective pathways towards a profitable process. In general, this process is catalyzed by a highly active Pt-based catalyst supported on γ-Al2O3. However, its low 1,3-PDO selectivity and stability due to surface deactivation of such catalysts remained. This led to the surface modification by WOx to improve both the selectivity by means of the increased Brønsted acidity and the stability in terms of Pt leaching-resistance. Hence, we applied experimental and density functional theory (DFT)-based techniques to study the fundamentals of how WOx modified the catalytic performance in the Pt/γ-Al2O3 catalyst and provided design guidelines. The effects of WOx promoter on improved actertheless, various promoters that can promote SMSPI need investigations.Since 2001, hundreds of thousands of hours of underwater acoustic recordings have been made throughout the Southern Ocean south of 60° S. Detailed analysis of the occurrence of marine mammal sounds in these circumpolar recordings could provide novel insights into their ecology, but manual inspection of the entirety of all recordings would be prohibitively time consuming and expensive. Automated signal processing methods have now developed to the point that they can be applied to these data in a cost-effective manner. However training and evaluating the efficacy of these automated signal processing methods still requires a representative annotated library of sounds to identify the true presence and absence of different sound types. This work presents such a library of annotated recordings for the purpose of training and evaluating automated detectors of Antarctic blue and fin whale calls. Creation of the library has focused on the annotation of a representative sample of recordings to ensure that automated algorithms can be developed and tested across a broad range of instruments, locations, environmental conditions, and years. To demonstrate the utility of the library, we characterise the performance of two automated detection algorithms that have been commonly used to detect stereotyped calls of blue and fin whales. The availability of this library will facilitate development of improved detectors for the acoustic presence of Southern Ocean blue and fin whales. It can also be expanded upon to facilitate standardization of subsequent analysis of spatiotemporal trends in call-density of these circumpolar species. The retinal microcirculation is increasingly receiving credit as a relatively easily accessible microcirculatory bed that correlates closely with clinical cardiovascular outcomes. The effect of high salt (NaCl) intake on the retinal microcirculation is currently unknown. Therefore, we performed an exploratory randomized cross-over dietary intervention study in 18 healthy males. All subjects adhered to a two-week high-salt diet and low-salt diet, in randomized order, after which fundus photographs were taken and assessed using a semi-automated computer-assisted program (SIVA, version 4.0). Outcome parameters involved retinal venular and arteriolar tortuosity, vessel diameter, branching angle and fractal dimension. At baseline, participants had a mean (SD) age of 29.8 (4.4) years and blood pressure of 117 (9)/73 (5) mmHg. Overall, high-salt diet significantly increased venular tortuosity (12.2%, p = 0.001). Other retinal parameters were not significantly different between diets. Changes in arteriolar tortuosity correlated with changes in ambulatory systolic blood pressure (r = - 0.513; p = 0.04). In conclusion, high-salt diet increases retinal venular tortuosity, and salt-induced increases in ambulatory systolic blood pressure associate with decreases in retinal arteriolar tortuosity. Besides potential eye-specific consequences, both phenomena have previously been associated with hypertension and other cardiovascular risk factors, underlining the deleterious microcirculatory effects of high salt intake.Developing compact ion accelerators using intense lasers is a very active area of research, motivated by a strong applicative potential in science, industry and healthcare. However, proposed applications in medical therapy, as well as in nuclear and particle physics demand a strict control of ion energy, as well as of the angular and spectral distribution of ion beam, beyond the intrinsic limitations of the several acceleration mechanisms explored so far. Here we report on the production of highly collimated ([Formula see text] half angle divergence), high-charge (10s of pC) and quasi-monoenergetic proton beams up to [Formula see text] 50 MeV, using a recently developed method based on helical coil targetry. In this concept, ions accelerated from a laser-irradiated foil are post-accelerated and conditioned in a helical structure positioned at the rear of the foil. The pencil beam of protons was produced by guided post-acceleration at a rate of [Formula see text] 2 GeV/m, without sacrificing the excellent beam emittance of the laser-driven proton beams.
