Types of Deadlocks for Doors
Hook bolt deadlocks are installed on aluminum sliding narrow stile storefront doors to maximize lock strength and security. These locks are keyed on both sides for greater flexibility in access control.
To accurately determine the size of a new lock for your door, you must first determine the depth of the case (or backset). This is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the latch hole.
Tubular Latch
The tubular latch is by far the most well-known door latch. It's simple to install and an absolute favorite among DIY enthusiasts and Joiners alike. It is available in a variety of sizes shapes, styles, and levels that will suit any style door handle.
A tubular latch has a rectangular steel casing that contains a spring-loaded follower and a latch bolt (also called a striker). When you open the door the latch retracts, allowing you to shut and lock it. When you close the door the latch bolt will then spring back to catch on the edge of the frame and hold the door shut.
You'll need to decide on the height of the latch on the door before you put it in place. Many people assume that a metre from the floor is the correct height to position a latch and door handle. However, this isn't necessarily the situation. The latch on the door knob should be placed in the middle of the rail. This is where the majority of the weight is carried by the door when it is open and closed.
Once you've decided where the latch will be placed and where it will be, mark the location of the hole in the door and on the strike plate using the help of a pencil. Then, drill pilot holes for the screws that will be used to secure the plate to the door. After you've drilled the pilot holes, you can use a countersink to ensure the plate's back will be in line with the door once it's been screwed into place.
Consider a double-sprung lock for those who require a more durable option than the standard tubular lock. The door will shut more easily when you use this latch, as it comes with a separate spring to move the tongue. It also has a strong-action spring on the spindle follower to ensure that levers or doorknobs return to their horizontal positions after every use.
Once you've fitted the latch to the door, you'll need to attach a strike plate to the frame. The strike plate is the part that sits in the space left by the latch after it's closed. You should mark the area in which you'd like to place the strike plate on the frame section surrounding it. Use your knife to cut an appropriate square for the plate and then take it off.
Cylindrical Latch
Interior doors are typically fitted with cylindrical locks. They can be found in homes and offices, and are very versatile in terms of their applications. Cylindrical locks work similarly to mortise lock systems but are much easier and faster to install. hook deadlocks for vans do not require that an "mortise" or pocket be cut into the door's frame like mortise locks. The bore or hole is cut into the surface of the door, and they are then inserted into the door. They are available in a variety of types and can be used with knobs or levers to open and close the door.
The primary difference between mortise and cylinder locks is that only a specific key is needed to unlock these kinds of locks. The pins are fixed by springs and pins of different sizes. Once the key that is correct is inserted and the pins align themselves, and allow the cylinder to turn. This allows the latch bolt to retract so that the door can be opened.
If the wrong key is inserted, pins are not aligned correctly, which stops the cylinder from moving. It's important that you use the correct key to gain entry to your home or office.
The cylinder itself is located within the door's frame and is connected to the operating trim via an extension that is half-round or square. The cylinder also has small notches on its side that are designed to align with the key notches once the correct key is inserted. Once the cylinder is moved, the latch bolt will follow.
A strike plate is a plate that is affixed to the door frame and captures the latch bolt that is projected from the lock. The strike plate is generally made of heavy steel and anchored in the door frame using screws. It also has an opening for the latch bolt to engage into.
When replacing a cylindrical lock ensure that you use the proper tools to remove the handle of the old lock or knob and latch bolt. The place of the new strike and latch bolt on the door and frame after taking off the old hardware. It's a great idea to test the operation of your lock by pressing it against the latch bolt or strike plate by using your finger. If the strike plate or latch bolt is damaged or does not operate correctly, you should look into replacing the bolts and strike plates.
Key-Locked Latch
This kind of lock can be controlled using the key on the outside and a lever or knob on the inside. This type of lock is suitable for doors that are not at risk of being interfered with, for instance in offices. This type of lock permits the outside lever to either be locked or unlocked, while the inside knob/lever is open for immediate exit. The key is only required to re-lock the latch bolt after the door has been closed.
The pins of a key-lock line up and are pointed at a point called the shearline. These pins align with the shearline when the correct key is put into the lock. The plug can then be turned to release the latchbolt. If you've had keys that fit perfectly into a lock but isn't able to open it could be due to one of the pins isn't aligned to the shear line.
Face plates are also utilized on a few locks. They can be decorative or add strength and security to the locking mechanism. It's common to find these plates on mortice locks and rim locks with reversed spring bolts.
A strike plate is also available. It is typically connected to the door frame and the jamb. It also has an opening through which the bolt is carried from the cylinder into the lock. It is usually employed with deadbolts to offer additional security.
There is also the cylinder, which is a series of pins that are aligned with the key's point to prevent it from turning. It can be difficult to choose a cylinder of good quality without the right tools and understanding. To lock doors, the key must be turned in the same direction the door is opened. If the door opens with the right hand, for example the key has to be turned clockwise in order to lock the door. To unlock the door, the key needs to be turned counterclockwise. This is different from other locks that require you to turn the key in the opposite direction of the opening of the door similar to the Chubb lock.
Keyless Latch
A keyless latch lets you to lock and unlock your door without using the traditional key. Keyless locks are operated using the smartphone app or access code, and some models even include a hidden camera for additional security. Be aware of your security requirements and compatibility with existing hardware and doors when you select keys-free locks. Read the instructions of the manufacturer and specifications before installing. Certain keyless locks might require special door modifications or preparations.
A number of companies are working on smart locks that can replace traditional keys and provide additional security features. These devices can be unlocked using the use of a code, fingerprint or facial recognition, and are often more durable than traditional locks. Some smart locks have the ability to detect tampering, and detect if a door was opened using a key that is not authorized or force.
One company, named Latch has come up with a sleek, high-tech lock that works like other smart locks. Its primary target market is realty companies who manage apartments. The lock is unlocked with a key, passcode or mobile phone. Renters are able to let in dog walkers, cleaners, or guests from out of town with temporary codes. The company claims this will stop tenants losing their keys, and will reduce maintenance costs as there is no need to replace locks when a renter moves out.
The Latch lock may not be accessible to the public at this point however it may be found in condos or large apartments. The company has already begun testing the lock in a few places, and plans to launch more units this coming year. The price is comparable to the cost of a standard lock. The company also offers low prices for software and competitive pricing.
You can alter the shortcuts at any time by using the Latch App. To do so, open van hook deadlocks and select the menu at the top left-hand corner of the screen. Select 'Widgets' and select the doors that you would like to show as shortcuts. You can check the access history of your doors through the Latch App after you have set up them.
