Our analysis shows that current malaria vaccine formulations are based on rare haplotypes and thus may have limited efficacy against natural parasite populations. High levels of diversity with evidence of balancing selection was detected for most of the erythrocytic and pre-erythrocytic antigens. Measures of natural selection were then mapped to 3D protein structures to predict targets of functional antibodies. For some antigens, geographical variation in the intensity and distribution of these signals on the 3D structure suggests adaptation to different human host or mosquito vector populations. This study provides an essential framework for the diversity of P. falciparum antigens to be considered in the design of the next generation of malaria vaccines.Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had a significant global impact due to the millions of deaths it has caused secondary to respiratory failure. However, the disease has also been associated with a wide array of manifestations in other organ systems. Among them, the presence of anosmia, which occurs in up to half the patients, has become a new sign of alarm to suspect the infection. Although up to 90% of affected patients will experience an improvement of their olfactory alterations within a month after the infection, the variety and severity of olfactory disturbances clearly cannot be summarized by the dichotomy of having anosmia or not. Parosmias are a type of olfactory dysfunction characterized by altered perception of odors, which can reflect both damage at some level of the olfactory tract, as well as the possibility of reversibility of said damage. The present manuscript describes possible olfactory disturbances associated with COVID-19, their pathophysiology, and potential clinical significance.
Kidney transplant (KT) is the most common solid organ transplantation in the world.
To analyze the information from Mexico on KT, waiting lists (WL) and patients on dialysis between 2012 and 2019 and compare that of 2019 with those of the countries of the American Continent, Spain and Portugal.
The required information was obtained from the Global Observatory on Organ Donation and Transplantation (GODT).
Between 2012 and 2019, the annual number of kidney transplants (KTs) in Mexico increased by 12.5%, while the WL by December 31 of each year did it by 86.1%. In 2019, Spain and the US reported the highest KT rates, while Mexico ranked 8
in the Pan-American and Iberian comparison, 6
in the American Continent and 4
in Latin America. Mexico did not report to GODT the number of patients on dialysis in 2019 and 2018.
KTs should be considered an integral part of renal replacement therapies. The GODT reports include the numbers of patients on dialysis for each country. Mexico does not always report this data, probably due to the lack of a national registry of chronic kidney disease, the creation of which should be supported.

Real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is the gold standard for establishing the diagnosis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Chest computed tomography (CCT), as a diagnostic complement, classifies tomographic findings according to the COVID-19 Reporting and Data System (CO-RADS).
To determine CCT sensitivity and specificity for COVID-19 diagnosis.
We reviewed RT-PCR results, as well as their respective CCTs. All CCTs were classified according to CO-RADS. CCT sensitivity and specificity were evaluated using the RT-PCR result that was closest to that of CCT as reference.
We included 412 patients, out of whom 277 were males (46-70 years) and 130 were females (45-71 years); with 181 negative and 231 positive tests, a sensitivity of 92.15% and specificity of 79.32% were obtained. Mortality increased after six hospitalization days, in males and in CO-RADS 4, 5 and 6 in comparison with CO-RADS 1, 2 and 3.
Early diagnosis plays a decisive role in the prognosis of SARS-CoV-2-associated pneumonia. Although RT-PCR is current gold standard, false negatives are common; for this reason, CCT helps to confirm suspected cases, even at early stages. This imaging technique is an accessible and fundamental study for classification, diagnosis and prognosis.

Coronary ectasia has a low prevalence in the general population. Its risk factors may differ from those of coronary artery disease.
To identify the prevalence of coronary ectasia in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs).
Retrospective, cross-sectional study. Out of 3,254 cardiac catheterizations for AMI during one year, 2,975 had no coronary ectasia. We included 558 patients with coronary ectasia on coronary angiography and, as controls, subjects with similar characteristics except for coronary ectasia, and CVRFs were recorded. Descriptive statistics, bivariate and multivariate analysis were used; odds ratio (OR) was calculated.
279 patients with and without coronary ectasia were studied. The prevalence of coronary ectasia was 8.5 %. The platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) was higher in patients with ectasia than in those without ectasia (p = 0.003). In the bivariate analysis, associated CVRFs were overweight, obesity and diabetes, and in the multivariate analysis, hypercholesterolemia (OR 3.90; p = 0.0001) and exposure to herbicides (OR 6.82; p = 0.020).
A high prevalence of coronary ectasia was found, with the main risk factors being a history of herbicide use and hypercholesterolemia. PLR was found to be elevated in these patients. Early detection is important due to its association with acute coronary events.

The prevalence of Parkinson's disease (PD) increases as the population ages. Studies have shown that some cardiometabolic comorbidities could be associated with risk or protection against developing PD. A retrospective case-control study was carried out to analyze the relationship between PD and cardiometabolic comorbidities.
Subjects with PD and controls without PD were consecutively recruited. Data on type 2 diabetes mellitus, systemic arterial hypertension (SAH), dyslipidemia and body mass index were collected. Logistic regression analyses were carried out.
A total of 781 subjects with PD (56.5% males) and 1,000 controls (44.4% males) were included. After adjusting for age and gender, SAH was found as an independent risk factor (OR 1.32; 95% CI 1.05-1.67; p = 0.02), and obesity as a protective factor (OR 0.72; 95% CI 0.56-0.93; p = 0.01).
Subjects with SAH had a higher risk of having PD, while obese subjects had a lower risk of having PD. The relationship between cardiometabolic disease, its treatment, and PD etiopathogenesis appears to be extremely complex given the amount of contradictory data.

The purpose of the study is to investigate whether there is any relationship between mean argyrophilic nucleolar organizing regions (AgNOR) number and total AgNOR area/total nuclear area (TAA/TNA) ratio and the levels of brain hypoxia after exposure to different acute doses of carbon monoxide (CO) gas.
Each experimental group was exposed to CO gas (concentrations of 1,000, 3,000 and 5,000 ppm). Then, the rats were anesthetized, and blood samples were taken from the right jugular vein for carboxyhemoglobin levels detection. The rats were sacrificed on seventh day. AgNOR staining was applied to brain tissues. TAA/TNA and mean AgNOR number were detected for each nucleus.
Significant differences were detected among all groups for TAA/TNA ratio, mean AgNOR number and carboxyhemoglobin level. According to a double comparison of groups, the differences between control and 1,000 ppm, control and 3,000 ppm, control and 5,000 ppm, and between 1,000 and 5,000 ppm were significant for TAA/TNA ratio. When mean AgNOR number was considered, significant differences were detected between control and 1,000 ppm, control and 3,000 ppm, control and 5,000 ppm, and between 1,000 and 3,000 ppm.
AgNOR proteins may be used for early detection of the duration, intensity, and damage of brain injury caused by CO poisoning. Thus, effective treatment strategies can be developed for the prevention of hypoxic conditions.

Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have a higher prevalence of insulin resistance (IR) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) than controls.
To evaluate IR in non-diabetic women with SLE by means of biomarkers using high-throughput metabolomic techniques.
Cross-sectional study in patients with SLE. A metabolomic approach was employed using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry. MetS was evaluated according to NCEP-ATP III criteria.
Seventy patients with SLE were included, out of whom 45 (64.2%) and 27 (38.5%) had IR and MetS, respectively. Patients with IR had a higher body mass index and hypertension more often than those without IR. Chronic damage and disease activity were not related to IR. A Quantose-IR score ≥ 63 was more common in patients with MetS (81.5 vs. 53.5%; p = 0.02). Quantose-IR score was also correlated with the number of criteria for MetS (r 0.35; p = 0.003).
In non-diabetic women with SLE, the prevalence of IR based on Quantose-IR score was 64.2%.

Estrogens that are used as contraceptives or in replacement therapy are associated with an increase in the risk for developing thrombosis, mainly during the first year of treatment and in women with associated risk factors.
To synthesize, characterize and identify the anticoagulant, antiplatelet aggregation and microvesicle-reducing effect of the new aminoestrogen Tyrame.
CD1 strain mice were used, which had Tyrame (0, 1 and 2 mg/100 g) subcutaneously administered. At 24 h, a blood sample was obtained to determine whole-blood clotting time, microvesicles concentration and inhibitory effect on platelet aggregation.
Blood clotting time increased up to 1.5 times in comparison with the control. Platelet aggregation inhibition had different magnitude depending on the agonist agent employed, and was complete with collagen. Both effects had a dose-dependent relationship. The microvesicles decreased up to six times with respect to the control.
Tyrame reduces platelet aggregation and microvesicle formation, which emphasizes its potential therapeutic utility as an estrogen free of thrombotic effects.
