Going to the Grocery Store

Plan your trip. Spend some time with the adult who will be going to the store with you. Decide which grocery store you will be going to and when you will go.

Create your shopping list and find an estimate of how much you plan to spend at the store.

Go to the store. Make sure you take your worksheet and a pencil with you.

Find the exact total of your shopping list based on the prices you found at the store.

Use your knowledge of decimals and your experience with this project to answer the questions on the worksheet.

Directions: Enter all of the information you collect for this project in the appropriate space on this worksheet. Make sure you take this with you to the grocery store!

Step 1: List the 10 items on your shopping list you plan to buy in the Item column. Estimate the price of each item using newspaper ads, online prices, or prior knowledge. List these amounts in the Estimated Price column.

Step 2: Round each estimate to the nearest dollar and place that amount in the Rounded Price column.

Step 3: Add the rounded prices of all 10 items to determine the approximate cost of your shopping list. Write this amount in the appropriate space on your chart. Now you have an idea of about how much you expect to spend at the store!

Step 4: Go shopping! Fill in the actual price of each item you find at the store in the Actual Price column of the chart.

Were there several brands available for some of the items you chose? How did you determine which one to buy? Use the Shopping Notes section to note how you decided which brand to buy. You can also use this space to note anything that surprises you while you are at the store.

Step 5: When you get home, add the actual prices of all 10 items together. Write this amount in the appropriate space on your chart.
